The guys over at 3-Gun Nation had hoped that they would get a big response from the 3-gun community for the regional matches of 2014, but they never expected it to be quite this big. The plan was for the registration for the four regional matches to open at 9 PM the night of Thanksgiving, but as the appointed hour arrived the site was completely inaccessible. Apparently the load was simply too much, and everything stopped working. It was like watching the launch of Obamacare all over again. . .
My day job is working for a large hosting company, and so I see this all the time — companies that don’t have enough servers to handle the load and flop spectacularly when they have something big going on. It’s one of the reasons I have come to love the F5 LTM/GTM, and to a lesser extent the Brocade ADX. But I guess the 3GN guys skimped a bit on the hosting and are paying the price. Here’s the email that went out when they finally called it quits and closed the registrations:
Dear NICK
Due to the overwhelming response, our systems have crashed, locking most people out from registering for the 3GN Regional Matches.
Technicians have been hard at work since the launch, attempting to resolve the problems. However, after 90 minutes, the system is still not operating well enough to handle the demand.
So at this time 3GN is closing registration to the Regional matches until the problems are resolved. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience to all.
We put this registration on a holiday on purposewith the intent that family and friends could see our members interest and love for the sport of 3-gun. We hoped that each of you could take this opportunity to share the sport of 3-gun. However, this has clearly been a failure on our part. For that we truly apologize.
Our team will continue to work on the issues, and well re-launch the registration, one match at a time, at a later date.
And well work our tail off to do better next time.

On the one hand, this is great since it means that 3-Gun is a sport with tons of people who want to participate. But it also means that the infrastructure supporting that sport needs to grow to accommodate the new shooters. And I get the feeling that GoDaddy isn’t really the place for that.
You know guys, if you’re looking for some technical help . . .
Either go daddy is experiencing heavy traffic, or a whole lotta folks wanted to register, or a combo of both.
Considering the day, it’s a crapshoot.
My last job used go daddy. Even with 9 total employees, the amount of times it wasn’t working was very bothersome.

Not really, cause once the glitch is worked out and up and going, you will have something worthwhile to sign up for, Obamacare, not so much…………. . .
…and you won’t be penalized if you decide to not participate in 3-Gun Nation.

They should have just used active.com for the registration site. It’s easy and it works.
I remember when I was at my 3 gun major match a few years ago one of the sponsor mentioned that year 87,000 people had shot 3 gun so far that year. Now I know a lot had (like me) had shot multiply events but there was way more than I could possible attend. I bet now there are way more shooting it now judging how fast they sell out now.
So I’m not surprised it crashed, yesterday it was the Black Friday of 3 gun
Why the hell would they have registration on Thanksgiving? Spend some time with your families.
Their reasoning behind it is in the letter quoted above, and also quoted directly below this in my comment. They were trying to broaden their exposure.

I like the way they were thinking, though. Sometimes it’s amazing what happens when people you don’t know are into guns show their true colors. I found out at the gathering before Thanksgiving dinner that my mom was planning on taking a concealed carry course. (My dad already has a permit, but doesn’t carry.) You know who told me? Not my mom. It was one of the ladies she attends church with. I had no idea she had any interest in that area. I actually thought she was mildly opposed to guns in her house. For the record, she doesn’t even know I carry. (She might know I’m a gun owner, but we’ve never openly talked about it. With my assumption of “mildly opposed,” I figured it was one of those “if I don’t acknowledge it, it doesn’t exist” things.) So that situation made for an interesting (if brief) conversation later, and the expectation of more to come.
