As some misguided American cities such as Memphis, Tennessee, and Savannah, Georgia, attempt to buck state law and create their own patchwork of gun laws designed to restrict Second Amendment rights, at least one city in Colorado is moving the opposite way to support Constitutional freedoms even as their state assembly works to restrict them. Last night, the Aurora City Council overwhelmingly voted to continue allowing concealed firearms in city hall and other government buildings, including to council meetings and other proceedings, in a move to “opt out” of Colorado Senate Bill 24-131.

That recently approved state bill bans possession of firearms in government buildings, polling locations and schools, but allows local governments to opt out of the law.

“If passed, the measure would allow council members, city staff and the public to continue bringing concealed weapons to council meetings and other proceedings at city hall, which increasingly have been marked by vitriol, infighting and outbursts with and among the public,” the Aurora Sentinel reported. Anyone who has ever attended a city council meeting or covered one for a newspaper knows that vitriol, infighting and outbursts are pretty common events where the voices of Democracy are required to be heard.

The Sentinel reports “the city previously banned unconcealed, or ‘open carry’ guns from city hall in 2015, and would continue to do so.” However,  Councilmember Curtis Gardner, who proposed Aurora’s measure, explained the move to the Sentinel “as a symbolic reaction against increasing state gun control laws and as a matter of what he sees as local control.”

The council unanimously approved the ordinance on its first reading in July and was again, not opposed in the final approval with nine votes supporting the move and one abstention.

Last May, Douglas County in Colorado approved a similar resolution, the Denver Gazette reports.

    • I haven’t read everything on this I’m sure, so I’d appreciate any links to source documents/video you might have. The piece I see cited in this context is a BBC article:

      http://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c75nn9dr0rvo

If you read all the quotes of the prosecutor (Parkinson), he seems to be talking about UK citizens who are abroad (“bring them home”). He doesn’t seem to be talking about citizens of other nations. Though he also doesn’t explicitly say he wouldn’t go after those. And I wouldn’t put it past the collectivist authoritarian leftists here to be sympathetic to that and help if they thought they could get away with it.

My take so far is that this isn’t a direct threat of a jackboot stomping and trip to the gulag against foreign thought criminals, but it certainly demands awareness and scrutiny.

    • According to what I read (BBC source; I tried to post a link which I guess caused my comment not to be posted), the prosecutor (Parkinson) seemed to be talking about UK citizens living abroad (“bring them home”) and not foreign nationals. Still well worthy of scrutiny and awareness, since there are plenty of powerful people in the US who would love to help like-minded authoritarians in the UK lock up thought criminals.

      • P.S., this one is a clear and direct threat of criminal prosecution against foreign nationals for expressing views distasteful to a ruling government, expressions which are clearly not calling for violent action against anyone. This time from France:

        https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13742909/Elon-Musk-JK-Rowling-prison-sentences-fined-Olympic-boxer-Imane-Khelif-cyberbullying.html

I don’t think either Musk or Rowling are residents or citizens of France, so the next question would be what enforcement mechanisms would exist if Musk, Rowling, or others who might be involved never went to France? I guess that would depend on the governments of the nations of the accused. Just 10 years ago, if anyone told me something like this could happen in “the free world,” I would have told them they were insane. This is very disturbing, and it seems to be escalating quickly.

  1. Anyone who has ever attended a city council meeting … knows that vitriol, infighting and outbursts are pretty common events where the voices of Democracy are required to be heard.

The reason for that is exceedingly simple: there are a large number of people in our population who vigorously want evil in our society–and are willing to get very ugly as they try their damnedest to make it happen. And for whatever reason, we reached a tipping point in our nation where said evil people are no longer afraid to issue their demands.

What we see at such meetings is no different than a violent rapist’s vitriolic outbursts for his victim to comply with his demand of rape–and the woman who responds with equally vitriolic outbursts for him to leave her alone. Of course the actual problem isn’t the woman’s vitriolic outbursts for the rapist to leave her alone: the actual problem is the rapist who is demanding rape.

    • I guess nobody is the bad guy of their own story. And humans have a frightening capacity to accept anything as normal and even righteous as long as the people around them accept it.

Regardless, there are a number of activities going on now in the US and Western civilization that I think are likely to shock and disgust future generations. I hope that they don’t make the same mistake in thinking “it can’t happen here,” but looking back over the course of recorded human history, that seems to be an unfortunately part of the human condition.

  2. The le.ga.lizati.on of pot in colorado is far more important, than anything written in the american Bill of Rights.

According to the smartest people in the room.

      • As I recall she came in 5th in her home state in the Dem primaries last time she ran for President. I don’t think she’d be the choice of many Dem voters if there were being offered a choice instead of having a candidate installed by the Party. But you are right that there still little or no chance CA will go to Trump.

  3. leave the metro areas and California becomes way more normal and less leftist. it would be great if we could ditch the urban areas and have only the burbs, desert, central valley and mountains. then the coastal turds could just keep to their seaside toilet bowl.

  4. I feel for the citizens of Aurora after the maniac shot up that movie theater so I understand their desire to defend themselves for that reason.

    • Not only has the horse been stolen, but the barn has been demolished and replaced by a subdivision…

      Still, better late than never.

  5. Kamala Harris VP Tim Walz Says To Ban AR-15s Because He Carried Them In War.

“Kamala Harris Vice President pick Tim Walz stated “I spent 25 years in the Army and I hunt. I’ve been voting for common sense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks. We can research the impacts of gun violence. We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war”

Tim Walz’s humble bragging about going to war when he never saw combat is diabolical.

For some reason, Tim Walz thinks his veteran status gives him super sayin’ authority over the Constitution to tell citizens what they can and can’t use to protect themselves.

What makes him look even dumber is that an AR-15 is not a weapon used in war!

Tim, I, the rest of the gun community, and anyone who understands the Second Amendment don’t care about what you carried in a war you never fought in when you’re trying to use your service to infringe on constitutional rights.”

  6. In 2020, Tampon Tim Walz ordered Police and National Guard to terrorize and fire on innocent peaceful citizens to enforce a curfew.

… supposedly with paintball guns, but there were muzzle flashes observed and paintball guns don’t have muzzle flashes. Now, I don’t know about what you think but the reality is there is no legal or constitutional justification in any state in the United States that allows a governor to deploy armed Police and National Guard (state government troops) to enforce a curfew and use that force against innocent peaceful citizens on their own property on their own porches and issue orders through basically the barrel of a gun concept to these innocent peaceful citizens, especially while that governor facilitates the, basically, violent terrorism actions of ‘protestors’ which were the reason the curfew was imposed. And these Police and troops were willing to obey an unlawful order and pull the trigger on their own innocent peaceful citizens, not protestors, because Walz ordered it.

Now, what would Harris and Walz do if they wanted to confiscate guns? Yep, Walz has shown he is willing to use the ‘Chairman Mao porotocol’ to impose his tyranny – what was that thing Mao said….oh yeah… “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun” and he confiscated firearms and literally slaughtered millions of innocent peaceful citizens. This man, and Harris, are Mar – x – ist Soci- a – list commun – ist just like Mao was.

    • Yea, when I heard that guy say “light em up” I got chills. Those people are US citizens being fired upon by LE/military is unforgivable. Signs of things to come.

  7. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 4th, a woman narrowly escaped a domestic violence brutal assault by her boyfriend, thanks to the swift actions of a vigilant neighbor. After breaking free from her restraints, the woman ran to a neighbor’s house seeking refuge. The boyfriend followed and began assaulting her again. The neighbor, witnessing the assault and fearing for her life, quickly took action. He confronted the assailant with a firearm, ordering him to release the woman. The man, startled by the presence of the gun, let the victim go and fled the scene. The neighbor immediately brought the woman inside his home and called 911, ensuring her safety until the police arrived.

(note: The police briefing video is on facebook, but some people don’t use facebook, so here’s a link with the facebook video but also relates the incident.)

  8. On 2-7-2008 a man went to the Kirkwood Missouri council meeting. Outside the building he murdered a police officer with a .44 magnum pistol and took the dead officer’s handgun. Inside the council chambers he killed another police officer and three members of the council. There was a “NO GUNS” sign outside the building. Whenever I am in Kirkwood I always make a detour to go by the building. The last time was about ten years ago and the sign is still there! Some people never learn.

  9. “Wrong on both counts…”

Democrats want abortion to be legal until the moment of birth. There have even been open discussions about legal post-birth abortions. Miner, do you want to place limits on abortion?

The determination of secks* hasn’t relied on genitalia since the late 1950’s. That’s because some people are born with deformed or ambiguous genitalia. Ever since then, secks* determination has relied on the presence or absence of the Y chromosome. Males have a Y chromosome. Females do not. Doctors have historically operated on intersecks* babies to push them in the direction the doctors feel like they should be pushed. Many intersex people don’t have exactly what they were born with.

Let’s say you have a doctor lop off your p-e-n-i-s and carve out a pocket in your pelvis. Does this mean you are no longer a male? That unethical doctor merely changed the facade. He didn’t remove your Y chromosome. You’re still a male. You will always be a male, no matter how much you try to change your appearance.

That’s science. A lawsuit won’t determine what science is. We’ve known these things for decades. Remember when Democrats were gaslighting us by calling themselves the party of science? Everything you guys push is based on lies.
