“The Beretta Mx4 Storm is a new submachine gun version of the Beretta Cx4 Storm semi-automatic carbine,” our good friend at thefirearmblog.com reports. Is it me or is gun design getting stuck in a sci fi movie marathon? The Chiappa Rhino has the whole Van Helsing steampunk thing goin’ on. The Kel-Tec KSG wouldn’t look out of place in Starship Troopers. And the MX4 seems like something Mama Alien would’ve birthed for Ellen Ripley. You know; if they’d been on the same team. On the other hand, Bollywood! “The Mx4 has been designed for the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs who should be receiving their first shipment in the next 12 months. . . The gun is chambered in 9x19mm NATO. It features a 12″ barrel and has a total length of 25″. It weights 6.28 lbs (including magazine).” Like I said: I’m waiting for the movie.
In an American Rifleman review some months back they said that the mags for the pistol were not shared by the carbine. That seems to me to be very poor engineering.
They’re actually designed to be able to switch magazine types. For example, you can order one that uses the 92FS magazines, but if you sell your 92 and get a PX4, you can order a conversion piece to maintain compatibility. They used to also come in a variety that used 8000 Cougar magazines, but I don’t think that’s available anymore.
The Cx4/Px4 magazine noncompatibility issue is only for the version chambered in .45 ACP (the .45 ACP Cx4 accepts 8045 Cougar magazines). The 9mm Cx4 Storm comes in two variants: one accepts Beretta 92 magazines, while the other accepts Px4 magazines (I own the one that accepts Beretta 92 mags). Finally, the .40 S&W Cx4 accepts Px4 magazines. (All information about magazine compatibility is taken from the Beretta Cx4 Storm page.)
Interestingly, Wikipedia credits Italdesign Giugiaro with designing both my carbine and my vehicle (a Suzuki SX4). I guess Giugiaro has a thing for projects ending in “X4″…. 😉
Thanks guys
The CX4 storm was the colonial rifle used in the series remake of Battlestar Galactica.
The Berettas will be replacing 34,500 HK MP5s in Indian service.
