Range Ammo
Training with quality range ammo is essential for honing your skills and building confidence with your firearm. Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) rounds are the most common choice for range use due to their reliability and affordability. However, innovations like poly-coated ammunition, such as those offered by HOP Munitions, are revolutionizing training ammo. These poly-coated rounds provide smooth feeding, reduced fouling and exceptional performance, often rivaling or surpassing FMJ in consistency and reliability. Investing in dependable range ammo not only improves your shooting experience but also ensures your practice sessions translate effectively into real-world readiness.
Concealed Carry Ammo
When it comes to self-defense, selecting reliable Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) ammo is non-negotiable. JHP rounds are specifically designed to expand on impact, maximizing stopping power while minimizing over-penetration—critical factors in a self-defense scenario. Pairing your defense ammo with training rounds of the same grain weight, such as using 147-grain poly ammo from HOP Munitions for practice and 147-grain JHP for carry, ensures consistency in performance, recoil, and point of aim. This seamless transition from the range to real-world carry builds confidence and familiarity, giving you the peace of mind to trust your life to your gear when it matters most.

“When it comes to self-defense, selecting reliable Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) ammo is non-negotiable.”
Wrongo. Plenty of smaller calibers are not at all good with hollowpoints. Typical TTAG fuddery.
All I want for Christmas is national reciprocity. anything more than that this year would be just a cherry on top.
Nikita, the problem is not usually the ammunition. Regardless of caliber. It’s the weapon and/or magazine.
Not functional reliability issues but an issue with reliable expansion versus sufficient penetration. 9mm and up is fine with quality expanding projectiles while most handgun calibers under that size -makarov, ,380, and smaller usually does better with FMJ or monolithic bullets.
PSA has the Platinum Sar9 for $219.99…you snooze you lose…Good company for a firearm purchase, a steal even for bigots who get their panties in a wad over Made-In…connect the h…

I’ve got a Sar9 in my collection. only taken it out several times to the range, put about 1,000 rounds through it over time. never had any issues with it, except one time when at about 500 rounds it began to exhibit a, guess I can call it, ‘sensitivity’ to ammo over 115 gr but that seemed to have stopped after a change in ammo brand.
Nikita, depends on make/model. A surplus Com-bloc pistol. Sure, nothing but ball ammunition. Everything that everyone else owns tends to work fine with modern HP. If not, there are a few modern loads that function like ball, but the terminal ballistics are similar to high performance modern HP.
My friend Grumble was telling me all of his relatives are getting ammo for Christmas. I observed that none of his close relatives own guns. “Exactly” he said. “This opens the opportunity for another discussion as to why they should come shooting with me. You’ve got this present, but it does not come with instructions. Let me show you how to use it!”
“Do you think you will get any takers?”, I asked.
“Maybe one or two will crack…I’ve been working on them for a while.”
Grumble is a real character.
+1 Good idea for the boyfriend/girlfriends of my children. Kids are all covered.
I have a Nexbelt, but I bought it from Blade-Tech. Wearing it now. I love custom leather, but this thing is hard to beat. What I carry, and how I carry it, can change. IWB, OWB, one spare mag, (two?), a knife. This belt is almost infinitely adjustable, and extremely well suited for carrying weight on your waist.
Best gifts for concealed carry.
A Humvee.
Gadsden Flag.
At the low velocity of some handgun calibers they will not reliably expand and in some handgun calibers an expanding bullet will not penetrate deep enough
.25acp, .380 for instance.
Better to use fmj.
I thought you was a cop ballistics guy and all that?
Bingo. it’s about the reliable expansion and penetration issues. JHP isn’t a good idea for lower-powered cartridges on smaller concealable guns, and shooting overpowered calibers in tiny guns yields less than satisfactory accuracy for most merr mortal shooters. Poor shot placement defeats having a super-powered cartridge when it fails to do the job on an extremity or misses altogether.
All this “non-negotiable” BS thrown around by writers here. There ain’t no negotiating going on feller, stick it where the sun shineth not. They aren’t my commander. I make my own decisions and carry what I decide is best for me.
Xdduly elected official,
Some people even carry handguns chambered in .22LR and softpoints rather than hollowpoints provide a higher probability of incapacitating an attacker.
By the way I sometimes carry a Ruger LCP chambered in .380 ACP (I actually carry two of them if I don’t have my “primary” Smith and Wesson M&P40 on my hip) and I load those with Underwood 90 grain Xtreme Penetrator monolithic bullets which look like Philips screwdriver tips. That particular cartridge makes a respectable permanent wound channel even coming out of the tiny Ruger LCP.
The Underwood monolithic bullets are claimed to have some pretty amazing performance characteristics over traditional hollowpoint expanding projectiles. Unfortunately they tend to little on the expensive side -especially for some of the odder chamberings. 9-Mak is ridiculous for some reason, and can run nearly twice the cost per round as their .380 version. Also, there is a marketing issue on their part with two competing products called Xtreme Penetrator and Xtreme Defender. They both have slightly different tip profiles. The Penetrator product seems to be aimed at the hunting market yet seems to be over-represented in defensive calibers like .380 and 9mm Mak. It’s difficult for the consumer to decide which is better, especially since they are a new and relatively unknown product overall.
I just assume the defender is a better overall option compared to ball but may have tradeoffs vs hollow points….. unless you are dealing with 32/380 acp in which case yeah probably better off with underwood. With that said if improvised body armor or older kevlar panels are a potential issue the 9mm, 10mm, and 357 Sig in the lighter weight defender loads are great.
TXC holsters are ok, but after trying them I tend to think the ‘Helix technology’ attribute they claim is more hype than reality.
clarification for: “…attribute they claim is more hype than reality.”
the holster does bring the gun in a little closer by what they do with ‘Helix’. But the ‘comfort’ they claim due to ‘Helix, well, its the same as any other kydex or polymer holster is. if it goes well with your carry position body shape then its more comfortable for long periods of time but this is not the case with everyone or me for holsters in the ‘cookie cutter’ manufacturing world for holsters of this material which is why my actual IWB EDC holsters are custom made for my carry position.
Replace their poodle shooter with something with a 4 – .45, 10mm, .40.
Why?
SAFEupstateFML.
Even if it was legal I wouldn’t use a .9mm for deer hunting.
I wouldn’t use a sewing needle either!
Xmas present to me is CZ Nocturne from Cajun Gunworks with their enhancements. Ho Ho Ho.
Nice Missy12.👍
Merry Christmas.
