While there is not yet confirmation of this from official sources or the White House, Jared Yanis at Guns & Gadgets on YouTube shared a letter late yesterday allegedly from ATF Director Steve Dettlebach to President Joe Biden announcing his resignation effective January 18, 2025.
“Pursuant to the Memorandum for Presidential Appointees on Guidance on Letters of Resignation dated December 18, 2024, I hereby tender my resignation as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF), effective as of January 18, 2025,” the letter reads.
“It was the honor of my professional career to serve at ATF in your Administration. As you said when nominating me to be ATF Director, ‘The mission of this agency isn’t controversial. It’s public safety.’ I have now seen the brave and talented people at ATF live out your words for years. And we have realized results,” Dettelbach continues in the letter.
Dettlebach has been under constant fire as the head of an ATF, who under his leadership has seemingly worked to suppress the rights of Americans more than go after actual criminals.
“Dettelbach has faced sharp criticism from gun rights groups and Capitol Hill Republicans, particularly for his role in advancing Biden administration gun control policies. These include regulations on so-called ghost guns, devices converting pistols into short-barreled rifles and unlicensed gun sellers and gestapo-like tactics from ATF agents including the killing of Little Rock Airport Executive Director Bryan Malinowski during the execution of a questionable no-knock warrant,” we just wrote yesterday on TTAG.
President-Elect Donald Trump had vowed to fire Dettelbach on day one of his administration. Now it seems he won’t have that opportunity.
“I have told you in the previous video I put out today about the future of the ATF, that he did say he was going to quit before Trump takes office, like a coward,” Yanis says in the video. Check out what Yanis has to say about the resignation in the following video.

nope.
4hrs and one minute later you tailgate onto the first post to leave a link that no one will open.
I opened it.
It was merely a link to Auld Lang Syne, with lyrics so you could sing along. But it appears to have been taken down, probably for copyright reasons.
Oh well, Happy New Year to all anyway!
Auld Lang Syne is in public domain. Being more than 200 years old, Auld Lang Syne the poem and the melody – their copyrights having long expired – are in the public domain. When a work enters the public domain, you are free to copy it word-for-word, make derivative copies, make your own recordings, and do whatever the heck you want with it.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
(Chorus)
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne
“… ATF … under [Director Steve Dettlebach’s] leadership has seemingly worked to suppress the rights of Americans more than go after actual criminals.”
That is very easy to understand when you realize that many/most government politicians and bureaucrats consider many/most U.S. citizens to be the enemy.
And that last sentence is easy to understand when you realize that many/most government politicians and bureaucrats are only concerned with their own wealth and power and view most U.S. citizens with disdain. Remember, Democrats have repeatedly AND OPENLY labeled something like 50% of U.S. citizens as “deplorables” and “trash”. Then there is the fact that the Democrat Party platform tacitly regards something like 50% of U.S. citizens as stupid and inept–unable to make their own way in the world.
Do some government politicians and bureaucrats respect U.S. citizens and treat them honorably? Absolutely. And I would argue that such politicians and bureaucrats are a very small minority of all politicians and bureaucrats. Plan accordingly.
Well, bye.
The Democrats are COUNTING on over 50% of US citizens being stupid and inept – they are known as their voter base.
The freak out since the Dobbs decision is a fine example of how ignorant Dem voters are. How many of them know that abortion has increased since then? How many of them know that Roe v. Wade had a viability standard (no abortion once the fetus is viable outside of the womb)? How many of the “save democracy” crowd understand that they hate democracy because they’re against the will of individual state voters? Ignorant, emotional people are easy to manipulate.
goddamn shame Needledick is theowing in towel
“Needledick”……..if he has one he better spit it out, for it ain’t his!
Dispicable rat bastard
And let’s not forget about the ATF’s more recent act of criminality and terrorism…. threatening to even shoot children by holding them at gun point…

All I got is a simple wild ass guess (SWAG) that these resignations signal an admission that even leftist judges on the DC District Court won’t be able to stop Trump from cleaning house.
in the executive branch the employment law is different from the rest of government branches. position ‘appointed’ in the executive branch are not employees in the regular sense, they are not employed like a regular employee but rather they ‘serve at the will and pleasure of the president’ and can be terminated for any reason at any time and the legal aspects of terminating them don’t apply. So the DC courts would have no input at all on the matter of a termination, Trump is free to clean house as he sees fit.
and reason can be as simple as no reason at all.
Bye Bye Felecia…
This is pretty standard. Political appointees are replaced wholesale when administrations change over, and they almost all “resign” as a matter of custom.
What I’m not sure is standard practice is whether they wait until their replacement is ready to take office or resign effective on the new inauguration as was done here (18 Jan is the last day of the pay period preceding the 20 Jan ceremony). If it’s the former, this can be seen as a slight against Trump, but one likely to go largely unnoticed.
This has nothing to do with MAGA or Pres. Trump.
One point to make: ATF Director Steve Dettlebach was not responsible for the bump ban. He just gleefully enforced it. It was a Trumpian executive order that got that ball rolling. One last note: “Or, Mike, take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system. Because a lot of times, by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court, to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early. Like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida, he had a lot of firearms – they saw everything – to go to court would have taken a long time, so you could do exactly what you’re saying, but take the guns first, go through due process second.” Don’t be sure of your Second Amendment rights
Trump’s choice, Bondi, for Attorney General has a pretty poor record on not preserving our Second Amendment rights.
Okay doomer.
No, he’s 100% right. Bondi is NOT a friend of the 2A.
It doesn’t take a “doomer” to see and speak the truth. You should know that.
I wouldn’t call him a doomer, which he is, if he had merely written that last sentence. You’re trying to put lipstick on a pig for some reason. There was much more to his comment which had a very specific theme that you apparently missed.
Do you really think that Bondi is going to make coming after 2A rights a priority of the DOJ considering the current political environment? Be honest.
Fired or quit, don’t mean spit.
Trump needs to pick a director who will help restore freedom and the Constitution.
Trump needs to pick a director that can put the ATF on the track toward complete shutdown and dissolution.
I’m sure that peckerhead is gonna collect his pension without reservation.
He will. But it will be worth it if we ensure that there won’t be any other p3ckerheads following in his … footsteps…?
Wait, do they have feet?
