“A man set his house on fire and then fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy and wounded another Saturday when they responded to the scene,” foxnews.com reports. “A Tallahassee police officer who lived nearby heard the shooting, threw on his bullet-resistant vest, grabbed his gun and ran to the house. The officer shot the suspect dead. The wounded deputy was saved by his vest and his injuries are not believed to be serious.” The crime evokes memories of Webster, New York murderer William Spengler; the Bushmaster-equipped killer took out two firemen after Spengler set his house on fire. It also comes on the heels of the Pennsylvania ambush and manhunt triggered by cop killer Eric Frien. TTAG likes to keep armed police honest but that doesn’t stop us from cautioning cops: be careful out there. [h/t JR]
I suppose if he never had a firearm then he wouldn’t have set his house on fire? Must ban firearms because they set houses on fire!
It’s because they legalized hunting with high capacity assault supressors.
Those ghost ones? Or just the ones with the shoulder thingy?
Did he set the fire with his fire arm? Maybe.
Expect SWAT teams to increase in number dramatically as they will now be called in for every house fire. As a result, expect wrong-door no-knock raids to increase with more innocent people being shot to death by trigger happy government agents (swat cops).
A lot of people don’t realize that the proverbial ‘bullet proof vest’ won’t stop a rifle round. Not unless it’s a military model with a trauma plate at less than about 25 yards. So if the round when through the vest I’m betting a rifle was used.
Better than nothing…
A rifle round against the soft armor most police wear actually isn’t better than nothing. It will do literally nothing to stop that round. It will go through both sides of that vest and the person wearing it. It can actually be worse than nothing because if you’re still alive when medical aid arrives, the vest is now one more thing they have to cut off of you before they can start treating the GSW.
Did it say where the cop was shot? Or that he was shot through the vest? From what I understand, the face isn’t bullet-proof, and you can’t really tie a tourniquet around the neck.
It’s been happening for a while:

In NY they just made it more illegal to shoot first responders. I am sure that thought would cross someones mind before committing such a crime.
Good guy with a gun …
Rough week for Florida.
If only those wishing to score political points would have the decency to give the grieving some time and space. There’s a bit of that on both sides, but I fully anticipate the Bloomies to be dancing in blood before the weekend is over.
This just sucks right out loud. I’m sure we’ll hear in the coming days what his motivations were, as if it matters.
Even when that news gets announced, I’m not going to listen.
On another note, “be careful out there”? Not “Nice work, officer. Thank you”?
So another good guy with a gun (and body armor) stopped another criminal? Good for him. How many more times does this have to happen before the Left acknowledges that armed people save lives?
I fear that number may be somewhere in the ballpark of our national debt.
either 70 million more times (reported) or NEVER…..for the liberals are totally insane when the word ‘gun’ is mentioned
And that armor saves lives
Not even the best militaries in the world survive an ambush. My heart goes out to the families of those involved.
If some whacko wants to do evil to law enforcement, it’s almost impossible to stop especially since these officers probably weren’t expecting anything other than a fire.
But military ambushes can have a different outcome as shown by the Kentucky National Guard unit that was ambushed during convoy duties in March 2005. The difference was the Guard unit was expecting, or at least waiting for the inevitable to happen.

I get so tired of reporters saying things like “Bushmaster Equipped”. Bushmaster is a brand name and not a death ray gun.
In Florida we will start hearing about the need to repeal stand your ground and mental illness as the scapegoats for this event…imho
I’ve thankfully never been dispatched to an ambush call. It is something that crosses my mind, especially as a white cop. Also,
I’ve got spare body armor ready to go by my new nightstand.
Yeah, I always wondered about that sort of thing.
I hope you’ve watched or read THE ONION FIELD. Maybe not a true ambush in this sense, but it echoes the sentiment of one.
Evil exists, and is armed. Those facts form the basis for many of my decisions.
Good freakin’ job to the guy who at home but went and got the job done…
Has anyone heard anything more on this case? The gun reporting sounds like Sandy Hook where the guy shoots up the place with pistols and the reporters claim it was a “Bushmaster”. People are so afraid of Bushmasters that they the company was outlawed in Maryland.
