Outrage In Missouri Town After Police Shooting Of 18-Yr-Old Man

As stlouis.cbslocal.com is reporting, “Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed an executive order activating the Missouri National Guard on Monday afternoon. According to a news release, the role of the National Guard is to ‘…support law enforcement during any period of unrest that might occur following the grand jury’s decision concerning the investigation into the death of Michael Brown.’” According to the report, the Guard will be supporting the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the St. Louis County and St. Louis City police departments. Which means that the announcement of the grand jury verdict regarding Officer Darren Wilson could come as early as tomorrow. And that Nixon is expecting that announcement to be a ‘no bill’. Here we go.

    • I saw the list of demands that the protesters/activists presented to the powers that be. I guess they forgot to demand favorable weather. I just looked that twc.com’s 10-day forecast for Ferguson, and they said to expect indoor press conferences by angry men in berets and Free Mumia shirts calling for action through Wednesday, with warmer temps bringing improvised incendiary devices and general anarchy until at least Saturday, followed by more moderate outdoor press conferences with pleas for reconciliation and reconstruction and jobs for the disenfranchised.

      • There’s no Constitutional right to riot. Speech? Yup. Peaceable assembly? You got it. Petition the government for redress of grievances? I’m down. In fact, that’s one of my personal favs. But riot? No, sir. In fact, among other things, the 2nd Amendment is there to assist in quelling riots.

        • Yeah, I’m with you on all that. It’s just that when people start talking about spraying people with water cannon I think of people being sprayed UNjustly in the 60’s for freedom marching and all that. I’ve been on the receiving end of hurled projectiles before on Guantanamo in ’94, so I’m down for launching on violent rioters, but if all they want to do is shut down the streets and yell into the cameras for a few days, who cares?

          There is dirty hosing to quell justice, and there is a legitimate hosing to protect police officers doing their job. This would be housing to protect the police and to protect law and order. Screw the dirtbags who are trying to riot and loot. Social justice is not a smash and grab for a big screen TV. I would hose, pepper spray or bean bag those thugs in a heartbeat. And I wouldn’t lose a minute of sleep.

        • @Accur81: I rarely disagree with your posts. However, if it goes down as you propose in your comment then I predict that it will quickly turn into a shooting war instead of a war of words. There will be armed anarchists, armed anarcho-capitalists, and armed libertarians in those crowds of people. The government in Ferguson has already demonstrated a propensity to use force and threat of force against peaceful protesters and journalists while turning a blind eye to looters.

        • Yeah, once again, I said that if it’s a hosing to end violence and mayhem that’s reasonable. The original comment I was responding to was something like, “YEAH, SPRAY EM WITH A FIRE HOSE!” with no mention of violence.

          In addition to having been on the receiving end of rioting in Gitmo as an MP in 1994, I was also at the DNC in LA in 2000 as an observer, and I observed the LAPD using rubber bullets and stomp and drag tactics in response to no violence whatsoever, just because the DNC delegates wanted to walk from the Staples center to their hotels without being protested at. That’s the kind of thuggish anti first amendment behavior that I’m against.

    • So you really trust them to turn the hoses on the right people? Remember, they were threatening peaceful protesters and journalists while leaving the looters alone.

    • Nah. All the libs who block off the streets wear their best North Face and Columbia jackets when protesting. The other “protesters” can solve their clothing problem by looting the Galleria. 😉

      • Looting at the Galleria concerns me greatly, given that I’m staying across the street (and right next to the Metro stop) from the Galleria.

        But, your point is quite valid. If only all the oppressed of the world, now and throughout history, were as “oppressed” as the professional agitators who have been rabble-rousing here for the past three months.

      • Respectfully, unless you work for the prosecution you have no idea what evidence was presented to the grand jury. Additionally if no case is presented to a real jury no finding of guilt or innocence can be made.

        If you are suggesting that police should be able to kill people with impunity, I beg to differ. If you’re right about that you and everybody ought to treat the police as someone with a license to arbitrarily kill you. I disagree with that stance and that course of action. Everybody, even the police, must have a check on their actions which should be the law. If a jury finds the officer in question not guilty, or guilty then the system has rendered its judgement. The police, the system, and society in general lose legitimacy if the people (ie. the mobs that have been protesting and disturbing day to day life) don’t believe they are fair. Trials are an opportunity to give people the opportunity to decide justice without turning our society into modern day Syria.

        Is the possibility of an officer being proven guilty of a crime worth sacrificing a whole municipality, given the fact that he would still be innocent until proven guilty and would be able to present the “overwhelming evidence” in his defense and the prosecution having to prove BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT that he is guilty?

        • This case threatens to drive a wedge between TTAG’s ‘Mercuh faction and its Molon Labe faction.

          • It appears to me that the wedge here is the CopBlock faction. And to them I say: if you want to align yourself with Anthony Shahid, then you’d better be willing to lie in the bed you’re making.

          If you don’t know the publicly available evidence, that’s on you. Sorry, can’t help you there.

          And as for the nenecessity of a trial: the presumption of innocence demands that the State show probable cause that a crime was committed in order to prosecute. It is morally wrong to make any person endure prosecution without probable cause. In all cases of acting in self-defense, the burden should lie with the state to show probable cause that the act did not constitute self-defense.

          That Wilson is a police officer makes no difference. He enjoys equal protection under the law.

          And Darren Wilson is not holding an entire community hostage. His act of self-defense does not justify a bunch of riot-inciting criminals holding Ferguson hostage to their brand of mob rule.

        I further order, pursuant to Section 41.480, RSMo, the Adjutant General of the State of Missouri, or his designee, to forthwith call and order into active service such portions of the organized militia as he deems necessary to protect life and property and assist civilian authorities

        “Organized militia” meaning the National Guard?

    • Yeah…. You really don’t know what your talking about. I suggest a introductory class on American Government. And not one taught by some liberal race baitor.

    • I’d buy Officer Wilson a coffee if he’s on duty and a beer if he isn’t. That’s doing something about those darn cops who risk their lives to apprehend violent felons.

  5. The ROE’s should include turning around ALL vehicles with Illinois plates within a 100 mile radius of Ferguson…

    • That’s a really good idea. Simple. Of course it will interfere with honest folks as well. Kinda like gun control.

    • Do you have a map? Illinois is within that 100 mile radius. In fact it’s within 10 miles. So all those who live in Illinois with 100 miles and start to drive west should not be allowed to?

      Does that mean I shouldn’t commute through the city on I-70 from my home in Fairview Heights, IL to my job in Maryland Heights, MO?

      What do Illinois residents have to do with whats going on in Ferguson?

I am hoping and praying that this turns out like the weather does when the forecasters and freaking out and warning about tornados, and hail, and mass flooding and it ends up being just a normal rainstorm with maybe a little more thunder than usual. The gross mismanagement by the authorities and the general hooliganism by the locals is making this a recipe for some real problems.

  13. You can bet the strategy of the protestors will be to get the government to over react to create a media sensation. Thus far, sometimes the strategy has worked rather well.

  14. Amazing how they get worked up protesting the death of a small time thug. Rodney King anyone? And did anyone notice officer Wilson knew the “gentle giant” was wanted for robbing the mini mart. Unless I misunderstand we were told he knew nothing of any strong-armed robbery. Be vigilant folks. The lowlifes are loose…are they related to the idiots who cheered when OJ got away with murder?

    • Overlay a metro-link and demographic map on that one and it becomes clear that the targets in Frontenac, west county, and St. Charles don’t have to worry.

  17. One fact carefully not mentioned by the media is that the Governor of Missouri, the Mayor of Ferguson, and the Mayor of St. Louis are all DEMOCRATS. If they were Republicans, we would be seeing howls of outrage over their “racist preparations to suppress peaceful protests”. Funny how the media gets all nuance-y and thoughtful when the evil oppressive gummint leaders are Dems. Sort of like their approach to Obama’s use of the IRS to oppress conservative organizations.

  18. I think that the powers that be have decided that there is a certain amount of air in the balloon of anger over the shooting and that they will let as much of it hiss out the mouth of the balloon as they can before they pop the balloon and release all the pressure.

    Leak that it’ll be a “no bill”. Leak it again. And a few more times. Leak that the announcement is coming, then don’t abnounce. Then repeat that process a few times. Activate the NG, with a very, very obvious reason for why you activated it. Then don’t announce the “no bill.”

    I suspect at this point that they’ll probably drop the news at a really inopportune time, like 2 am on a Sunday, or 5 pm on a Friday when all the news people are heading for Happy Hour. Do it at a time, in other words, when the news is most likely to filter slowly through society, rather than go out with a big “pop.”

    I think it’s brilliant. Whoever came up with this strategy should get a medal.
