Concealed Carry

Before the landmark 2022 Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, states like New York, New Jersey and California made it very difficult for lawful citizens to get a concealed carry permit. And while those states have continued to buck Bruen and tweak laws into more lax laws that are still unconstitutional, the effect of the decision can be seen in the explosion in concealed carry permit applications in New Jersey since then.

According to a recent article in the New Jersey Monitor, more than 41,000 New Jerseyans applied for carry permits in the two years since the Bruen decision. That number is more than 25-times the number of citizens—1,588—who applied for a permit in the two years prior to the court ruling.

According to the report, residents of Ocean, Monmouth and Bergen counties were the most numerous to apply, making up nearly 11,500 of all applications. Nonresidents applied for 1,989 permits—more than all applications submitted the two years before the ruling.

Breaking down the demographics, the newspaper reported that male applicants far outnumbered females, with totals of 38,500 and 2,800, respectively. The vast majority of the applicants were white, but 4,900 black applicants, 1,381 Hispanics and 1,017 Asian American Pacific Islanders also applied.

Of course, gun-ban groups and cynical gun-hating politicians were not about to cheer the fact that 2,500-times more New Jerseyans had applied to practice a right that shouldn’t have been so difficult to practice. And they are applauding the state’s continued effort to make applying for and being granted a permit even more difficult, including putting gun carry permit application data online for all to see.

“Since the Supreme Court’s misguided decision in Bruen, which lowered the bar for who can carry concealed handguns in public, New Jersey has seen a major increase in handgun carry permits,” Mary Kenah, policy counsel with so-called Everytown For Gun Safety, told the Monitor. “In response to this troubling increase, New Jersey lawmakers continue to push the envelope, enacting strong gun safety laws and implementing tools to keep our communities safe, especially as the Supreme Court’s decision has dangerously widened the list of public places where guns are now allowed.”

At the other end of the debate, state gun-rights organizations believe the number of applications will only continue to grow when ongoing lawsuits are finally decided in gun owners’ favor.

“When there is a final outcome to that litigation, I expect there will be another surge,” Scott Bach, executive director of the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs, told the Monitor. “There are people who just don’t want to go through the intrusion and the trouble for a permit that’s only good for two years until they can have full carry rights. There are a lot of people sitting on the sidelines waiting for the moment when unfettered carry permits will be issued.”

  1. This is a reasonably good article. That photo of the woman pulling her gat from her purse makes this article great!

      • I recall reading an article about a study of the male mind. Volunteers were asked to look at photos of women facing the camera as the pics were presented, and a computer measured where the men’s eyes focused over a period of ten seconds on each photo. Almost without exception, the path of eye travel began at the cleavage and stayed there for a couple of seconds before moving to the face, mouth, eyes, etc. The more cleavage visible due to whatever shirt was worn by a particular woman, the longer the linger before proceeding elsewhere.

Always the bewbs first for a thorough inspection…

        • Are you retarded or just plain stupid. NOTHING you say is exactly NEW and you cannot upstage mother nature >But I utterly g fail to see what your observation about how a MAN SIZES up potential mating partners [or come to that vis-versa] has anything to do with the possession or no of any kind of weaponry This is no different to any Natural Behaviour in any civilised nation. Why do you d seem to think that it is a prelude to violence or rape and justifies firearms ownership ?? In purely PRACTICAL terms I simply cannot see any advantages to CONCEALED carry in any likely circumstance because the BAD guys and Gals are hardly likely to threaten you with a bloody CONCEALED carry are they?? If they even THINK that you may have a concealed carry they are loikely to come at you with GUN IN HAND are they nit? And before you can even think about ”DRAWING YOUR PIECE you are on a one way ticket to the bloody morgue. It may well give you a sense of e security but is more likely get you killed than offer any protection. YOU are not TOM MIX or the QUICK DRAW KID

          • “I utterly g fail to see what your observation about how a MAN SIZES up potential mating partners …

says the U.K. guy living in the rape capital of Europe who indirectly admitted in past posts (without realizing it) that he gets drunk and beats up women.

“Why do you d seem to think that it is a prelude to violence or rape and justifies firearms ownership ??”

In 2023, in the U.S., 35% of the women attacked for purposes of rape were armed with a firearm and successfully employed DGU to prevent the rape and also escaped injury, ~3% of others managed to escape their attackers before the rape took place and the rape happened on all the remainder even when ‘armed with something’ and/or employing other defensive means (e.g. trying to flee, barricading in a room, chemical defenses, hand-to-hand combat, screaming for help, blunt or sharpened/pointed ‘objects’, knives, calling 911 etc…).

In the U.K. in your gun ban/control utopia, in 2023, of 97% of the women attacked for purposes of rape none escaped the rape or serious injury, even when ‘armed with something’ and/or employing other defensive means (e.g. trying to flee, barricading in a room, chemical defenses, hand-to-hand combat, screaming for help, blunt or sharpened/pointed ‘objects’, knives, calling 999/112, etc…)

“In purely PRACTICAL terms I simply cannot see any advantages to CONCEALED carry in any likely circumstance because the BAD guys and Gals are hardly likely to threaten you with a bloody CONCEALED carry are they??”

well, this is a really ignorant thing to say. For example, criminal knife use in the U.S. outnumbers criminal gun use ~1,000:0.5.

(current odds as of August 1, 2024) odds of winning the lottery jackpot: ~ 1 in 292,000,000 – but, some people still purchase lottery tickets wanting to win the jackpot.

(current odds as of August 1, 2024) odds of your house burning to the ground: ~ 1 in 3,000 – but you still purchase home owners insurance

(current odds as of August 1, 2024) odds of being a victim of on line identity theft or some other on-line crime: ~1 in 4 – but you still purchase a computer

(current odds as of August 1, 2024) Odds of being a victim of a violent crime : ~ 1 in 3 – smart people purchase a firearm.

“And before you can even think about ”DRAWING YOUR PIECE you are on a one way ticket to the bloody morgue. It may well give you a sense of e security but is more likely get you killed than offer any protection. YOU are not TOM MIX or the QUICK DRAW KID”:

How very uninformed and ignorant and false.

A defender with a firearm is more than 97% likely to successfully employ that firearm in DGU to stop or deter a criminal attack AND escape any injury – no matter if they draw from conceal carry or open carry. Conversely, a ‘defender’ person not armed with a firearm is more than 85% likely to suffer very serious injury or death no matter what other ‘defense’ means they use.

    • That stock photo has been around more than Kammie Harris. Including on previous stories on this once great site. (a health lass to be sure).

  2. NJ will probably stay communist as far as gun rights go, people there are so stupid they aren’t legally allowed to pump gas in their own cars

  3. Since the Supreme Court’s misguided decision in Bruen, which lowered the bar for who can carry concealed handguns in public, New Jersey has seen a major increase in handgun carry permits.” Mary Kenah, Everytown For Gun Safety

    Translation:
The Ruling Class only wants the Ruling Class to have the privilege of being armed. The Working Class will have to somehow deal with being unarmed–to the benefit of the Ruling Class of course.

It’s almost like civilian disarmament efforts have little basis in racism and genocide, and everything to do with the Ruling Class increasing their wealth, power, and control over the Working Class.

Or did I miss something: are all of the members of the Working Class one race and are all of the members of the Ruling Class a different race from the Working Class?

  4. The democRat Party tried to character assassinate Thomas. Good thing they failed, may never have been a Bruen…

    • Corrupt Clarence Thomas does his own character assassination:

“IN LATE JUNE 2019, right after the U.S. Supreme Court released its final opinion of the term, Justice Clarence Thomas boarded a large private jet headed to Indonesia. He and his wife were going on vacation: nine days of island-hopping in a volcanic archipelago on a superyacht staffed by a coterie of attendants and a private chef.

If Thomas had chartered the plane and the 162-foot yacht himself, the total cost of the trip could have exceeded $500,000. Fortunately for him, that wasn’t necessary: He was on vacation with real estate magnate and Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, who owned the jet — and the yacht, too.”

      https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-scotus-undisclosed-luxury-travel-gifts-crow

        • so you don’t care that Clarence Thomas is accepting $500,000 gifts in violation of federal law?

“These trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures. His failure to report the flights appears to violate a law passed after Watergate that requires justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts, two ethics law experts said. He also should have disclosed his trips on the yacht, these experts said.

That same year, Politico revealed that Crow had given half a million dollars to a Tea Party group founded by Ginni Thomas, which also paid her a $120,000 salary. But the full scale of Crow’s benefactions has never been revealed.“

  5. “Bruen Effect Propels N.J. Carry Permit Application Boom.”

Why only now? Did I miss a detail in the post?

    • The Bruen decision basically said states cannot deny people their 2nd Amend. rights for arbitrary reasons. Every state should be on a “shall issue” basis ie; if you have a clean BCI and meet reasonable qualifications you get a carry permit, period. NJ has been historically very hard to get a permit. Except for the people that “Don’t Need A Stinkin’ Permit”.

      • “if you have a clean BCI and meet reasonable qualifications you get a carry permit, period“

And I completely concur with this position, bravo!

The reasonable qualifications should include both classroom and range instruction, as well as a skills test before one is issued a permit to carry a lethal weapon in public spaces.
