It’s okay to be dubious about gun-branded knives, especially when they’re a backup to your gun-branded gun. Plenty of smart gunnies carry Smith & Wesson handguns, but the S&W knives you see at gun shows are just garbage. Heckler & Koch makes particularly nice handguns if you have the means, but they’re no stranger to the term ‘badge engineering,’ either. Luckily, the boys from Oberndorf are pretty finicky when it comes to their manufacturing partners . . .

  1. Whoa whoa whoa. S&W knives garbage? My extreme ops SWA6 works quite well thank you very much. And for $10 I can’t complain if I break the clip.

Now I am lusting after an HK auto knife though……

    • S&W knives almost universally suck. I can’t see why they make wonderful revolvers and garbage knives. If yours works for you, I won’t give you a hard time. Personally, I’d never put my life in the line with a S&W blade, nor anything less than 154CM. I’d rather have S30V. YMMV.

  2. To be fair, h&k outsources to benchmade, whereas s&w uses schrade. The result being you get benchmade quality at much more reasonable prices. My first deployment, I used a h&k ally that cost me 24 dollars and worked great until I lost it. Then of course, aafes stopped stocking it, go figure.
