I could have made this up. But I didn’t. And I could take it at face value. But I don’t. First, madisoncountyrecord.com‘s jocular journalism: “Sherri Williams, owner of Pleasures, a one-stop shop adult romance store in Huntsville, is staying true to the phrase ‘make love, not war.'” Laughing yet? Me neither. “Starting at 11 a.m., Feb 8 and running through Feb. 15, the public is invited to bring in unwanted guns to the shop, in exchange for store credit. ‘It’s my way of getting guns off the street,’ Williams said. ‘Bring your own gun, no matter what condition, and we will give you whatever it’s worth with a store credit.'”As Fergie would say, h-h-h-h-hold it. I’m trusting a porn shop—albeit one with enough marketing savvy to offer drive through sex toy sales—to decide how much my gun’s worth? Isn’t that like asking Smith & Wesson to sell me a blow-up Western-style doll who knows that’s not a gun in my pocket? See that’s funny! OK, so . . .

Williams said she’s been a “lifetime proponent” for gun rights, and she believes there is a place and time for them.

She said Guns for Toys is her contribution to making love, not war in Alabama, where guns are legal and adult toys are not.

“When I heard about the Tucson shooting and thinking what could do to make a difference, I thought about giving people a reason to trade in a gun,” she said.

Gun received that are stolen or were used in a crime would be turned over to law enforcement.

Oh that’s going to go down well (so to speak). A sex shop is going to run ATF traces on guns traded for porn. Otherwise, what?

Williams plans to refurbish and sale the donated guns, with proceeds going to victims of gun violence.

“Our goal is to get hundreds of guns of off the streets and trade them for romance between the sheets,” she said.

Right. I’m going to trust someone in the sex trade to donate the full profits made on “refurbished” to charity. Isn’t that like trusting Bill Clinton with a cigar and a comatose Playboy bunny? Just sayin’ . . .

  1. She’s going to take these guns off the street and refurbish them and then sell them? Seems to me that she’s helping get all these guns back on the street. The girl in the photo looks like Jane Fonda (is that really Jane).

    • Does seem like a great way to barter some new guns for the collection, eh?

BTW, yup, it’s Jane. Cat Ballou with Lee Marvin in an Oscar winning performance. Personally, I thought it sucked, but I got a friend who is a Western junkie, so I suffered through it.

  3. I immediately went to the comment section of the Record to see what the good people of Huntsville had to say about this sex toy / firearm swap meet. Either no one reads the Madison County Record or they’re as baffled as I am about this story because there isn’t one single reader comment posted about this story.

Perhaps they’re all as speechless as I am.

So people in the sex trade are not trustworthy? What makes them any less trustworthy than anyone else? Also, I am not sure if I would consider selling sex toys “the sex trade”. That term tends to evoke images of prostitution more than sex toys.

    • It has been my experience that the porn industry and its retail outlets have direct connections to purveyors of prostitution and do not meet the rigorous ethical standards one can reasonably expect from business involved in less controversial not to say unseemly trades. That’s obviously anecdotal, based as I am in one of the most corrupt states in these here United. I am not a prude and I am ready to consider statistical evidence to the contrary. Meanwhile, I am not rife with anticipation that you will be able to satisfy that request.

      • I have to admit that I am not following you here.

So, the “retail outlets have direct connections to purveyors of prostitution and do not meet the rigorous ethical standards one can reasonably expect from business involved in less controversial not to say unseemly trades.”

So you are saying that stores that sell sex toys have connections to pimps? Funny, I have went into similar stores with my wife several times, and we were never offered a prostitute. That is what craigslist, backpage, facebook, p411, and tons of other websites are for. I feel like by your logic, I could say that you have connections to prostitution because your blog is on the internet, and I could get a prostitute on the internet.

I also don’t know what ethical standards you are wanting from a sex toy store, and I don’t know why you refer to them as “unseemly”, while claiming not to be a prude. What is unseemly about selling toys for couples to enjoy in their bedrooms? I guess Wal-Mart and Walgreens are also unseemly in your book, as they sell “personal massagers”, which, despite what it says on the box, are pretty much only ever used to massage that one special area. Are condoms and lube unseemly? If not, then why is a vibrator, or any other sex toy, unseemly?

I could go on and on, but I think I would need to know a little more about why you feel the way you do, in order to present a good argument.
