CBS News has the ATF Gunwalker scandal in its jaws and it’s shaking it like a Schnauzer with a rat. Tonight’s revelations center on the scandal’s scope. “[Special ATF Agent/Whistleblower Ken] Dodson  believes there are other ATF operations going on that have done the same thing. Multiple sources now tell CBS News the questionable tactics were used in more than one operation, and date back as far as 2008 in the Tucson area. One case was called ‘Wide Receiver.’ Sources tell CBS News these ATF operations involved about 450 weapons. Despite the risk, two years later the same strategy was expanded to include thousands of guns.” Click here for the story. Meanwhile, the Mexican government seems to know something the ATF (and CBS) doesn’t . . .

[Mexican] Congressman Humberto Trevino estimated Tuesday that 150 shooting injuries or deaths have been linked to guns that were allowed to proceed into Mexico as part of a U.S. effort to build cases against traffickers.

As we’ve said before, it’s the Mexicans who bore—are bearing—the brunt of an ATF operational decision that brings new meaning to the words “bone headed.” This story in the Washington Post reveals that Gunwalker is now, officially, an international political football. Sorry, incident.

And still the Washington Post refuses to grasp the significance of the Gunwalker scandal. “Mexican drug cartels frequently pay straw purchasers to buy weapons at U.S. gun stores and smuggle them south to avoid stringent gun-control laws in Mexico,” the article concludes.

Shame on them.

  1. The longer this case go on and whitehouse keeps pretend knew nothing about what happen more Obama gone look dumbass over it.

      • I hate to be pedantic, but the internets aren’t the best for conveying tone. What I mean by that is this-the root of these scandals seems to pre-date the Obama administration, just as Nixon was not involved in the planning or execution of the break-in. What sunk Nixon, and may cause Obama trouble if he doesn’t promptly lay his cards on the table and throw the BATFE&RBFs&GHs to the wolves, is the cover-up. The only thing Obama has going for him (as relates to this) is that people like Chris “He’s Perfect!” Matthews et al are totally in the bag for him. That being said, calling journalists whores would be an insult to the world’s oldest profession, so I think Obama better start tossing people (up to and including Holder) under any bus he can find.

      • Obama has a coating of Teflon on him the likes of which I have never seen before. It is stunning what he gets way with.

I think, if he continues to just not acknowledge this fiasco, that the ever compliant MSM will bury this story for him and it will all go away. I hope it doesn’t happen that way but I’m not holding my breath.

  2. I used to dislike Katy Couric. She is the last “journalist” in the universe I would have expected to be promoting this story. Now I have the hots for that little vixen.

  3. Aren’t we getting close to the point where even CBS will acknowledge that Mexican drug cartels aren’t “frequently pay(ing) straw purchasers to buy weapons at U.S. gun stores and smuggle them south to avoid stringent gun-control laws in Mexico,” and that instead the entire crisis has been manufactured by ATF?

  4. In light of the new report from CBS News, perhaps this will be interesting?

February 2008 – William Hoover, Assistant Director for Field Operations of ATF testified before Congress that over 90% of the firearms that have either been recovered in, or interdicted in transport to Mexico, originated from various sources within the United States.

Beginning in February 2008, and throughout 2008, Operation ‘Wide Receiver’ appears to be underway in the Tucson area, allowing, facilitating (and monitoring?) arms trafficking to Mexico.

In May, 2008, William Newell, SAIC ATF Phoenix reported to ABC News: “When 90 percent-plus of the firearms recovered from these violent drug cartels are from a U.S. source, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to stem the illegal flow of these firearms to these thugs.” Of course, ‘Wide Receiver’, ‘Fast and Furious’, and ‘Too Hot to Handle” were ramping up…..

    Ignorance? Coincidence? Duplicity? Complicity?

Between September and November 2010, ATF admitted to the DOJ IG that “the 90% figure cited to Congress could be misleading because it applied only to the small portion of Mexican crime guns that are traced.” And, we know the only guns which can be traced are U.S. origin.

Is this called a ‘Credibility Gap’?
