After rolling out their MkGs GUARD pistol caliber carbine in .45 ACP earlier this year, CMMG has now added a 9mm version. The good news: it utilizes standard, widely available GLOCK 33-round happy sticks. Like the .45 version, the parabellum models (six different versions) feature CMMG’s radial-delayed blowback operation (see GIF below) which is intended to minimize wear and make for a lighter rifle. The feature that sets the GUARD apart from the competition is the unique Radial Delayed Blowback operating system.
CMMG first invented Radial Delayed Blowback to reliably chamber .45 ACP, which was the first caliber introduced in the GUARD platform earlier this year. The recoil impulse of .45 ACP called for a new operating system that would compensate for the sizable recoil impulse without adding additional weight to the carrier and buffer. Straight blowback was not the solution and so Radial Delayed Blowback was born.
Now, when using the same Radial Delayed Blowback operating system to chamber 9mm, CMMG’s newest version of the GUARD boasts a lighter buffer and bolt carrier group than other 9mm PCC’s that use a straight blowback system. The combined difference in weight of the BCG and buffer when comparing straight blowback versus Radial Delayed Blowback can be as much as 6.5 ounces.
This reduction in reciprocating mass on the CMMG GUARD makes it a smoother shooting firearm, and makes it easier to keep follow-up shots on target. Whether using the GUARD for home defense or for competition, fast and accurate follow-up shots can determine success or failure.
CMMG also put a high emphasis on having fully functional AR15 controls, including last round hold open. The GUARD features an all-new patent pending dual-pinned, fully machined bolt catch linkage. This linkage provides consistent and reliable operation straight out of the box with no need for adjustments or fine tuning. The actuation from this linkage is robust enough that it still uses a standard bolt catch spring.

Ok, so. . . it works, I guess (cause they’re selling them) but that short animated video looks wrong to me.
If the round’s impulse was pushing on the bolt face (with the rear of the bolt’s lugs “chamfered”) it might well push the bolt back, and in going back (with the chamfer) it might rotate the bolt and cam pin. But what’s driving the Bolt carrier back before the bolt moves aft?

The unlocking movement (created by the bolt turning) would be against the cam pin stop (hole), and jam it up. ???
You can see it in the animation. The chamfer causes the bolt to rotate as it retreats. The rotating bolt causes the bolt cam pin to rotate toward the top. Because the slot it runs in is closer to the chamber at the top, that causes the BCG to move rearward. It’s a lot like how the retreating BCG moves the bolt in a traditional AR, except the roles of actor and actee have switched.
The reduced reciprocating mass (compared to direct blowback 9mm carbines) would be nice, assuming that extra friction point doesn’t affect reliability. I can feel a tiny difference in stability shooting my MPX (which has a more traditional BCG driven by the gas system) versus my Scorpion (which just has a heavy block of steel). But the Scorpion is much more reliable with a wide variety of ammo.
But this CMMG has a a forward assist and T charging handle: the only two terrible parts of the original AR-15 design. There are enough side chargers available, I’d go with one of those. I can’t cycle a T handle without taking my face away from the gun, but I don’t want to keep my face there anyway with a T handle gun, because of all the crap it’s spewing into my face, especially with a suppressor. And a 9mm carbine is practically begging to become a suppressed SBR.
Ok, my bad, took a longer look. At first it looked like the Bolt Carrier was moving before the bolt was turning.
Does look like it would impart much more force [bolt to cam pin to bolt carrier] in attempting to move the bolt carrier.
I don’t mind the T-handle so much (because I drive piston ARs) and I demand a dust cover and forward assist.
I am wondering, is there some type of gas tube feeding some push on that flat faced gas key looking item? Otherwise, how is motion imparted to the bolt, and what is the purpose of that thing if not?
Inquiring minds want to know.
They show this in the animation. The “gas key” is just there to prevent dropping this BCG into a standard AR gun.

1/2×36 thread pitch is a typo right? Should be 1/2×28?
Apparently 1/2×36 is the standard for 9mm barrels and suppressors. 1/2-28 is for a smaller caliber, the 5.56mm and various in that neighborhood, too small for 9mm.
I have a g19 gen4 with a True Precision threaded barrel with the 1/2×28 threads for my comp.
