Varminters rejoice! CMMG has just announced a new option in critter control. They now offering four models of their accurate, affordable Mk4 AR platform rifles chambered in new-for-this-year 22 Nosler, a round that can produce upwards of 3500 fps. CMMG’s also offering 22 Nosler complete upper receivers for an easy upgrade for your current rifle (22 Nosler loads in 6.8 REM SPC magazines). Here’s their press release:
There’s an old saying that says, “speed kills.” If that’s true, then CMMG’s new Mk4 in 22 Nosler is sure to be a lethal weapon on predators, varmints and other medium sized game.
Officially unveiled at the 2017 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV, the 22 Nosler is an extremely fast centerfire cartridge that is designed to function out of an AR platform rifle. Already SAAMI approved, a 55gr 22 Nosler Ballistic Tip round can reasonably expect muzzle velocities approaching 3,500 fps out of a 24-inch barrel.
Featuring 25% more case capacity than the 223 REM/ 5.56 NATO, the width of 22 Nosler means that it feeds out of 6.8 REM SPC magazines. Despite the larger casing, the rim has been necked down so that the round runs off a standard .223 bolt carrier group. When paired with this type of ballistic performance, CMMG’s Mk4 rifles in 22 Nosler are capable of filling the needs of long range shooters and a variety of hunting applications.
“Anytime there’s a new rifle caliber introduced, we always take a look at it and determine if it’s something our customers would be interested in and benefit from,” said Chris Reinkenmeyer, CEO of CMMG Inc.
“The 22 Nosler caught our eye for a number of reasons. First, it’s designed around the AR15 and so it’s very compatible with our rifles and also easy to match up with an existing lower. Second, our customers want rifles that are unique but with purpose. Based on our testing, we feel that the 22 Nosler does present significant ballistic advantages for shooters who require a fast, accurate and flat shooting projectile out of a relatively lightweight rifle.”
CMMG’s 22 Nosler line-up will include four different rifles, four upper receiver groups that can be pair with any mil-spec AR15 lower receiver and three barrel sub-assemblies. Each rifle comes standard with a 10-round magazine. Complete specs and pricing on the 22 Nosler configurations are below:

if the only way you can make “unique” rifles is a new caliber, you need to shut your doors. especially if its a damn .22 for these prices.
Sounds like you’re not familiar with .22 Nosler.
i’ve fired their mutant. solid.
i’m thinkin’ .22-250 myself. i don’t want semi for varmints.
.22-250’s rock!
39.2 grains of H380 below a 55 grain ballistic tip gets me 3,650 fps.
Beats a 22 nosler every day.
Yeah, but a 22-250 wont run from an AR. 22 Nosler will
I don’t get it. We know .22 Nosler is NOT going to be cheap ammunition. For what will almost certainly end up about the same price per round, I can shoot the well known .223 Remington caliber in the Hornady Superperformance flavor and get 3270 fps at the muzzle. I would have no interest in purchasing another barrel (and magazines) for .22 Nosler when all I get is a slight bump of around 200 fps at the muzzle.
Now, if .22 Nosler had a cartridge that launched something like a 75 grain bullet at 3,300 fps, that would be significant enough to consider purchasing another barrel and magazines. (The much higher ballistic coefficient of a .223 caliber, 75 grain bullet means MUCH greater velocities at long range.) As it stands, Hornady Superformance 75 grain (boat-tail, hollowpoint) rounds are exiting the muzzle at 2,910 fps.
Significant note:
If the .22 Nosler round boosted a .223 caliber, 75 grain bullet up to 3,300 fps, that bullet would still have 1,000 ft-lbs of energy at 350 yards versus the best .223 Remington cartridge falling to 1,000 ft-lbs of energy at 200 yards.
Almost doubling the range of the same bullet at the 1,000 ft-lbs. threshold — which many say is the minimum energy that we should use for antelope and deer hunting — is a BIG DEAL.
varmint.
Yep… varmint!!
You go shoot an antelope or deer with one.
Not me kid
The 50 or so deer I’ve killed with a 64gr soft point from an AR15 aren’t complaining it’s only for varmints.
Funny that it is not even overbore-ish, compared to .22-250. Might even take off (though I fail to see utility of “varmint ARs” with just 18″ barrel).
Trust me, you need to run 6.8 spc out of a 6.8 spc mag
A puny 1496 ft/lbs vs 1984 ft/lbs for Hornady .243/58g/3925fps Superperformance Varmint.
Now there you go!
I would much rather shoot a .243 caliber, 58 grain bullet at 3,900 fps than a .223 caliber, 55 grain bullet at 3,500 fps.
Unfortunately, you cannot simply put a .243 barrel on an AR-15.
I have seen AR-10s chambered in .243 but If you are varmint hunting a bolt bolt gun is probably a better choice.
22 Nosler…an answer to a question 204 Ruger already answered.
Not excited about the 22 nosler. 223/5.56 is readily available everywhere. Cheap, and plentiful. I can reload for it, with brass guaranteed once fired, and shoveled into bags and drums from the military range. It’s at Walmart, and any sporting goods store, practically anywhere. The 22 nosler’s additional 300fps absolutely does not offset the benefits the 223/5.56 has above. If I want more out of my AR15, I put it down and get out the AR10/LR308, chambered in 308 win. Furthermore, the 22 Nosler costs almost a dollar a round. I can get 308 cartridges (brass ones too) for fifty cents a round! Not excited about the 22 nosler.
testing 22 nosler and the BRASS IS SHIT tried different bolt carriers, tungsten weight, gas settings. Would be nice if the brass could last more than couple reloading. Rims are bent to shit . Put the 22 nosler shit in the garbage than wasting anymore time on it
