“Developed with the Canadian Forces through the Soldier Integrated Precision Effects Systems (SIPES) project,” the YouTube caption for the above video informs. “A bullpup design that features the ability to install either a three round 40 mm grenade launcher, or a 12-gauge shotgun. The next phase will feature a TrackingPoint style system to automatically detect targets and assist in engaging them. When optimized, the integrated weapon prototype could weigh less than a C7 equipped with a M203 grenade launcher, reducing the burden on [Canadian] soldiers.” popsci.com provides additional deets . . .

Made for Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC, or RDDC in French), the rifle has been in development since 2009, designed to give Canadian troops a lighter, better weapon. From appearances, it doesn’t really look lighter, and even the DRDC’s write-up only offers the cautious and polite caveat that it “could weigh less than” the Colt C7 Rifle Canada currently uses. The rifle’s planned data integration means that it will collect information and also receive it from command. In battles this could be useful to troops, and afterwards that data can better inform Canadian gunmakers as they plan for guns beyond this one.

So not a lot of love from Popular Science. Personally, I think it’s awesome – it could shoulder-mounted and disguised as a TV news crew camera. Once.

  4. Well looks aside wouldn’t it be better to have the higher kick option to the bottom? Seems like placing a 12 gauge above shoulder level would make for some pretty high muzzle flip.

    Other than that it also looks to have a ridiculously small length of pull.

  6. So it was developed in Canada for their military. Does this mean Canada is planning on stepping up in the world as a nation state policeman? I think it funny a country with serious gun control on the books develops something like this

It’s frustrating as a Canadian to have had these expensive, over reaching, unconstitutional and dangerous laws forced upon us by closed minded Liberals who are terrified of a citizen with a gun but have no problems militarizing our police and allowing criminals to be as heavily armed as they wish. Even more laughable is how they feel we are better off with a neutered military. They champion victims and shame hero’s it’s pathetic and makes me feel ashamed to be under the maple leaf whenever I hear them spout this nonsense.
