“Developed with the Canadian Forces through the Soldier Integrated Precision Effects Systems (SIPES) project,” the YouTube caption for the above video informs. “A bullpup design that features the ability to install either a three round 40 mm grenade launcher, or a 12-gauge shotgun. The next phase will feature a TrackingPoint style system to automatically detect targets and assist in engaging them. When optimized, the integrated weapon prototype could weigh less than a C7 equipped with a M203 grenade launcher, reducing the burden on [Canadian] soldiers.” popsci.com provides additional deets . . .
Made for Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC, or RDDC in French), the rifle has been in development since 2009, designed to give Canadian troops a lighter, better weapon. From appearances, it doesn’t really look lighter, and even the DRDC’s write-up only offers the cautious and polite caveat that it “could weigh less than” the Colt C7 Rifle Canada currently uses. The rifle’s planned data integration means that it will collect information and also receive it from command. In battles this could be useful to troops, and afterwards that data can better inform Canadian gunmakers as they plan for guns beyond this one.
So not a lot of love from Popular Science. Personally, I think it’s awesome – it could shoulder-mounted and disguised as a TV news crew camera. Once.
Cue Fifth Element references…
“Voila! The ZF-1. It’s light; handle’s adjustable for easy carrying; good for righties and lefties; breaks down into four parts; undetectable by X-ray; ideal for quick discreet interventions. A word on firepower. Titanium recharger; 3000-round clip with bursts of 3 to 300. With the replay button, another Zorg invention, it’s even easier.”
Now a real killer, when he picked up the ZF-1, would’ve immediately asked about the little red button… 🙂
You beat me to it
For the slightly older crowd…
Cue Beverly Hills Cop 3 Annilihator 2000 references…
That microwave oven and radio is kinda cool though…
Good Lord! That thing’s hideous! I wonder if they’re going to incorporate a whistle, compass, magic decoder ring and three way bottle opener.
I’d like to see one in the flesh just so I could sneer at it. 🙂
Companion to the ultra “swiss army knife” that has a microwave and dishwasher…
So far beyond ugly.
Well looks aside wouldn’t it be better to have the higher kick option to the bottom? Seems like placing a 12 gauge above shoulder level would make for some pretty high muzzle flip.
Other than that it also looks to have a ridiculously small length of pull.
it’s not man fire able…so who squeezes the trigger?
Canadians.
Zing!
The whole Army?… all 3 of them??
I will have you know that our very fine Canadian Forces are up to five now. At least until Fred and John retire next month.
So it was developed in Canada for their military. Does this mean Canada is planning on stepping up in the world as a nation state policeman? I think it funny a country with serious gun control on the books develops something like this
Lol you think it’s funny? Try living here and listening to the libtards and the socialist NDP tell us how morally superior we are to our American neighbors for enacting these stupid laws. It’s frustrating as a Canadian to have had these expensive, over reaching, unconstitutional and dangerous laws forced upon us by closed minded Liberals who are terrified of a citizen with a gun but have no problems militarizing our police and allowing criminals to be as heavily armed as they wish. Even more laughable is how they feel we are better off with a neutered military. They champion victims and shame hero’s it’s pathetic and makes me feel ashamed to be under the maple leaf whenever I hear them spout this nonsense.
Why is it covered with the words “Not Man Fireable”?
It’s in a testing vice and is a very early prototype. Why do you think?
I’d say it is because it is totally unsafe, even in a test vice.
Is that sight some sort of periscope technology because it’s about three feet above the bore. Good grief is this a Onion article?
So where’s the magazin go? Is it right at the back of the buttstock? How does the bolt pick up the next round if that’s the case?
Already a done concept by the Russians, having the mag so far back. Rest assured, that works.
Someone’s been playing too many computer combat games and got a job designing weapons. What an idiotic weapon.
OICW Redux…
Yup. Another ‘great idea’ from the boys in the lab to spend money testing for awhile before sticking with something that doesn’t require three engineers and a computer-scientist to maintain.
Oh, Canada…
Actually, as a Tavor guy, I kinda like it.
I’m saving my loonies for the explosively pumped laser pulse rifle with high speed variable aperture for maximum ablation and concussive impact. It’s gona be nice.
Probably about the worst conglomeration of ideas I have ever seen!
The gun or Canada?
LOL!
The real deal high speed guys will still run a 416.
I found their promo video….

Ahhh – beat me to it!
All it’s missing is the coffee machine on top.
Canadian space magic
If Labatt made a gun, it would look like this.
I don’t think their flux capacitor is generating 50 gigawatts just yet….
Wait whut?!? Canada ehhhh? Didn’t I see this in Aliens? April 1st already?
If only colt would supply our military with higher grade firearms than wasting their time with this crap.
