If you’re planning to attend the open carry rally at the Alamo in San Antonio, TX tomorrow, some tips for your protection and safety have been published over at Sipsey Street Irregulars (and another longer set here). Among the instructions are to avoid individual movement, and probably most importantly, leave your lock-blade knives at home. San Antonio has a prohibition on lock-blade knives, and also fixed-blade knives over 5.5 inches, so don’t make yourself a target for police attention. . .
Students at a North Carolina middle school were reportedly terrified last Friday when they were told there was a masked armed gunman roaming the halls of their school. The alert turned out to be part of a lesson — a school employee dressed up in a ski mask and carrying a fake gun pretended to be a robber — trying to teach kids to be aware of their surroundings. The school system admits it was maybe not the best idea. “In this situation, the exercise in its original intent was appropriate, but in how it was executed it obviously lacked judgment,” said Ken Derksen, Public Information Officer with the Wayne County Public Schools.
With the veto of SB374 in California recently, Senator Leland Yee is fighting on, recommitting himself to passing his legislation to extend and expand the existing California Assault Weapons Ban. His bill, SB47, was tabled when SB374 was introduced, as it covered the same ground. Yee’s SB 47 will prohibit the use of the bullet button and other devices that allow for easily changeable magazines on all military-style assault weapons, such as AR-15s. The bill is currently before the Assembly Appropriations Committee, where it could be heard as early as January.
Want to write a nice letter instead of a nasty one? Consider dropping a note to Mayor John Inks (L) of Mountain View, California. While the mayors of the neighboring cities of Sunnyvale and Palo Alto have been assimilated into the Borg collective that is MAIG, he has refused their overtures on more than one occasion. Members of a local Civilian Disarmament Movement group held a march today to try (again) to get him on board. While his reaction to the latest demonstration is not yet known, group head Josh Wolf notes that in the past, Inks declined joining the coalition as the mayor questioned whether it would truly stem violence and perhaps was more of an “anti-gun” agenda. Sounds like Mayor Inks has his head on straight, and should be commended.
The Yankee Marshall is not a fan of having a manual safety on his carry gun, but he loves his new (for carrying) Beretta PX4 Storm. The PX4 is a DA/SA gun is apparently available in a few different versions, including one with a manual safety and one with just a decocker. Since his has a manual safety, but he’d prefer a decocker, he sets about changing it. I was unaware this was possible, and it’s pretty neat, as manual safeties are frequently the target of “I like everything but…” statements.

When I started off into the world of pistols, I was dead set against owning a pistol with a safety. Then you get used to it, and flicking the safety on and off becomes natural.
Its one of those things where people either adjust to the gun, or they adjust the gun.

Running around school with mask and fake gun could get get you shot…. I am sure there are individuals who choose to carry even in a gun free zone.

Reminds me of the dipsh!t a few years back who was working for a singing telegram outfit – tried to deliver a birthday song in a courthouse dressed as Rambo and carrying a rubber AK-47. No serious injuries occurred, as I recall.
I love how kids get thrown out of school for making paper guns and saying “bang” but it’s okay for grown-ups to act like idiots…
Imagine if a teacher was conceal carrying and shot the fake gunman? Though I assume the teachers were in on it. Either way it is sick and disrespectful what they did to those kids.

Prohibition on lock blade knives??? That’s crazy. Lock blade knives are the only kind of pocket knife I use. They are the safest in my opinion as you know the knife can’t twist in your hand and fold back on itself. Can’t believe Texans allowed that crap to pass.

I wonder if you can get a type G storm from a dealer. I don’t mind a manual safety but after 40 years of pushing down to disengage the safety I have no confidence that I would not reflexively engage a Beretta style safety. That is one of the reasons I went with a Springfield for compact carry 9 instead of the Storm.

Well, it’s less about not attracting attention and more like “don’t give them a reason.” According to the New York Times article…
The San Antonio police chief has suspended enforcement of that ordinance for the rally. That’s the best course of action from their point of view, because if they suspend it on that day then nobody gets arrested for open carry, so nobody has standing to challenge the law in court, and they get to keep their (potentially) illegal law.
So now some city or county legislature can pass a potentially illegal law (actually, any law infringing on the right to keep and bear arms is illegal, but that’s another discussion) and the local police chief has the power to either enforce or suspend enforcement of that law any time he so chooses? What’s up with that? How does anyone know what is legal or illegal; the Chief puts a post somewhere in the morning paper every day as to which laws are or are not in force today?

Another fine pistol that can be converted easily from safety to decocker and back again is the CZ P-07 Duty.
Converted yes, easily I’ve heard otherwise.
I own a P-07 Duty .40 cal and I did the swap when I first bought it. Fairly easy, followed the video from CZ’s website. 3 or 4 minutes I think. I preferred it in decocker form, though, so I changed it back just as easily.
The P-09 as well.
This could go south really quick, should someone try to arrest anyone there. It’s about time a line was drawn.
