We’ll start with a story to watch out of Nebraska, that of a 20-year-old University of Nebraska Omaha student who was arrested early Saturday morning on felony charge of having weapons on school property. Campus security called police around 2 a.m. to report that a student had weapons in his dorm room. According to KETV.com, police “confiscated several magazines, ammunition and three rifles.” While that is clearly a violation of both school policy and the law, what makes this a story to watch is how it is handled. He admitted the guns were his, and from all accounts he simply had nowhere else to store them. He was not planning an attack . . .
and I’ve seen multiple articles where in the comments he was described as a nice guy who simply did a stupid thing. One of the comments at the article linked above actually describes him as a “gun nut,” and it’s meant in a good way, like “car nut” or “computer nut.” Whether you’re watching from “the law should always be evenly applied” side or the “a life shouldn’t be ruined over a stupid mistake” side, I’ll try to keep you apprised of the outcome of this one.
Your Lockdown of the Dayâ„¢ is the story I had the most fun writing tonight. It comes from Madison County, Iowa, famous for their covered bridges. Someone even made a movie about them. I didn’t see it, but apparently it did pretty well. Doesn’t seem like a movie about bridges would be terribly interesting. Well, Bridge on the River Kwai, but that’s a whole ‘nother thing. (That movie is on my “25 movies every guy should see” list, btw.) Anyway, Cory Daugherty was inside the courthouse in Winterset, Iowa (birthplace of John Wayne, pilgrim) and had just received a 10 year prison sentence for meth possession with intent. After the sentencing, he had what was described as a “heated discussion” with his attorney before pulling out a handgun, in the courtroom mind you, and running out of said courtroom. A deputy tried to Taser [Tase?] him, but was unsuccessful. He led police on a two-block foot chase before being cornered at gunpoint by Sheriff Craig Busch, to whom he surrendered. Not one but two guns were discovered in a dumpster in the alley down which Daugherty had been running. Anyway, back to the lockdown. According to the article at kcci.com, Winterset Community Schools instituted a lockdown after hearing about the incident. The article goes on to say “the situation ended about 10 minutes after the lockdown started.” Makes you (okay, me) wonder why they bothered.

Several firearms were discovered and seized by the Opelousas (LA) Police Department after a tip from an elementary school student during a gun safety class. The OPD was holding the instruction in the wake of the shooting death of a five-year-old boy in his own front yard by an alleged teenaged shooter. Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow began the safety initiative to better inform school kids about the dangers of guns being handled by those who are untrained. During the class, a student told police about the guns under an abandoned house, and police found “an SKS assault rifle 7.62 X 39, a Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun, along with a 38 cal. revolver.” The case, and the ownership of the weapons, remains under investigation.
Alabama will have a tax-free weekend the first weekend in September, thanks to a bill that’s headed to the governor’s desk for a signature. The “Second Amendment Weekend Holiday” bill will exempt guns, ammunition and “hunting supplies” from normal sales tax beginning at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in September and extending through midnight the following Sunday. A more expansive House bill would also have exempted boats, trailers, and ATVs, but those items didn’t make it into the Senate bill that finally passed. Still, it’ll save our Alabama brethren a few bucks, and maybe help them get a few bucks, too.
MattV2099 has been doing a series called Red Hot Muzzle Brake (a tribute to another YouTuber’s Red Hot Nickel Ball videos), where he drops a Red Hot Muzzle Brake onto various items to see what happens. This series doesn’t really blow my skirt up, so I’ve been avoiding them, but this one’s pretty alright. He drops his RHMB onto a half dozen or so .22LR rounds.

Wow…Alabama is cool! In Illinois we have the highest sales tax in America. And in Cook County the Dumbocrats passed a $25 firearm slush fund tax. I’m doing my best to NOT pay it.

The ones I used to see all the time had neither flash hider nor bayonet. Kind of wish I had got one now, along with one of those Model 44 Mosins that were going for just at $100.
The Mattv2099 video is 3:01 minutes of just stupid. Here we have desperate for attention Lt. Mall Ninja finding his 3 minutes of fame by posting stupid videos on Heywatchmetube. I just love it when someone greets me with “Yo!”, I know I am in for a stellar intellectual conversation.
The level of stupidity here is awesome.
Some highlights;
1. Well the point of the video for one, if it’s to just show stuff blowing up, I think this guy is probably no threat to Michael Bay.
2. Why are we blowing up unused 22 cartridges? Aren’t they like gold these days? I can think of so many better uses for them. You know like ammo for my training classes, since I can’t find any for my students.
3. I know without having something to hold the cartridge in place you don’t get the dangerous velocity that we have come to know and love from all things gun powder related. There is that whole Physics/Newtons law milieu. But still is this to present some sort of safety benefit? Maybe its a science video and providing a physics lesson? And finally my favorite, the propane canister next to a possibly exploding ceramic dish with heated glowing metal on top of precious 22. (Que the Gollum voice) My precious 22….. Cause you know those propane tanks make a nice boom when they go too. Now contrary to belief it is very difficult to make a canister of propane explode. However all the right ingredients were right there. The tank, the propane in the tank, the flying piece of metal to rupture said tank, ah yes and the heat source. That would be the “muzzle break” which has been heated to the point of glowing in an effort to provide said physics example. Now that would have been a cool video! Maybe he can get the girl in there too? (Can he even get a girl?)
Why oh why must TTAG give these people a platform? This is how we get the whole gun nut reputation. I grew out of this stuff when I left middle school. This guy is probably out of some sort of primary school (notice I said out of, not graduated), yet his facebook avatar image shows him trying to drink from two beer cans at once. That would have made a more impressive video then the crap posted on lookatmetube.
Come on guys, don’t give the loony left any more examples of poor behavior to use to support the idea that all us 2nd amendment supporters (and all those other pesky words from that “unimportant” piece of paper) are crazy, clinging to God and our Guns.

It seems to me that it is unconstitutional to forbid someone to keep arms in their home. Why would a school be different than other public housing? At least if I were his attorney, that is something I would look into.
If you can’t win on the facts, argue the law.
Florida Carry is actually asking that exact question in a pending lawsuit against the University of Florida, with regard to students who live (and have their home of record) on campus. The current solution is storing the guns at the University Police Department, but that requires taking them on and off campus via a specific route without deviation, and also only allows access during banker’s hours. Not to mention that it’s hard to defend yourself or your home, if necessary, with a gun locked in a storage locker at the station house.
Doesn’t the key to the issue lie in the legal definition of the word “domicile”?
Not really. As with most judicial decisions, the key will lie with the whims of the judges.

The NRA needs to jump on that case and defend that student all the way to the Supreme Court. They already have a strong background in 2A housing cases, and as a college student, this is something that needs to hit the courts.
This is ‘Mericuh. By the time it makes it to the supremes he’ll be well into his retirement.

My college provided some gun safes for student firearms. This was in California. It is not clear (being a private campus) that we couldn’t have them there, but insurance liability is an issue. Heck we had some random dude come one, park (illegally) in student parking and take a rifle out and hiked up in the woods to shoot some targets (it was a rural campus) and I believe, once his intentions were clear, that all the school insisted on was a parking ticket.
Laws need to admit of “epikeia”, that is clemency according to particular circumstances.
I remember I had a discussion with faculty about having a gun range. Zoning was an issue and insurance. Then I mentioned guns on campus. Apparently they allowed that until the early 1990’s (with storage provided in dorm) but legal counsel persuaded them to change. It seemed to me that we live there and hence had the right as with any other domicile. CA Courts have ruled (surprisingly I know) that campsites and hotel rooms count as domiciles and hence one can conceal carry or open carry as they like within them, just as in one’s own house. That logic SHOULD extend to student housing/dorms/etc, but who said anyone was logical.
Dropping a red hot hunk of steel into a ceramic bowl full of ammo….. a desperate cry for help.

The Haley video hits some very good points, but the best in my opinion is the workspace.
Just get the gun up into you line of sight for reloads, so you can at least half ass see what you are doing and see what’s in front of you.
One pistol class I attended, the instructor walked up and tapped me on the head while I was looking down reloading and said,” you’re dead.” Didn’t even see him there, which was the point.
It’s hard not to look down sometimes. I think its instinctual laziness to put objects at your waist while fiddling with them, so you don’t have to hold them up, I guess.
