Lott points out that despite claims by prominent Democrats like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg that crime went up under President Trump and fell under President Biden, the data tells a different story. Contrary to their assertions, violent crime actually fell by 17% during President Trump’s term, but soared by 43% under President Biden between 2020 and 2022. This stark reality is something that many media outlets and Democratic politicians seem keen to obscure. In fact, they outright lie about it it would appear.
The crux of Lott’s argument lies in the discrepancy between the two major crime data sources in the U.S.: the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The FBI data, which relies on crimes reported to police, shows a decline in violent crime since 2020. However, the NCVS, which surveys individuals directly about their experiences with crime, shows a dramatic increase in violent crime, with a staggering 42.4% rise in 2022 alone.
Lott highlights that this divergence is not just a statistical anomaly but reflects a deeper issue: the collapse of effective law enforcement across many American cities. For instance, arrest rates for reported violent crimes have plummeted, with cities like New York seeing a drop from 44% pre-pandemic to just 20% in 2022. This means that fewer criminals are being held accountable, not being arrested and charged in the first place, so it looks like crime is actually going down. This leads to a vicious cycle where victims increasingly believe there is no point in reporting crimes.
This breakdown in law enforcement is further exacerbated by the significant reduction in police staffing due to budget cuts, retirements and rampant demoralization of rank and file police officers in departments across the country following the “defund the police” movement, which many Democratic politicians, including Harris and Walz, supported. In some areas, police no longer respond to non-emergency calls, leaving victims to fend for themselves. Consequently, the FBI’s crime data, which relies on police reports, is becoming less reliable. There has also been a drop in police departments even reporting data to the FBI, which also accounts for less crime being counted. Meanwhile, the NCVS data paints a much more alarming picture of the true state of crime in the U.S.
Lott’s analysis warns that relying on the FBI’s data, as many Democratic officials do, conveniently downplays the severity of the crime problem. This selective use of data is a tactic to soft-pedal the reality of rising crime, allowing the Democratic Party to avoid accountability for the consequences of their policies. Even worse, it allows them to pedal progressive policies to an unwitting public; polices that actually make our communities less safe, such as releasing criminals and some illegals back on the streets.
Lott’s findings underscore the importance of scrutinizing the data and narratives pushed by those who seek to impose more restrictive gun laws, limit the effectiveness of our police departments and turn criminals loose on the streets to commit more crimes. The disconnect between reported crime and actual victimization serves as a reminder that protecting one’s right to self-defense is more critical than ever, especially in an environment where the government’s ability to ensure public safety is increasingly in question.

Instead of real solutions, the focus devolved into blaming law-abiding gun owners and again pushing a gun control agenda. “Enough is enough,” President Biden said. “Because we know we can do things about this, but for the resistance, we’re getting from some sectors of the government and the Congress and the state legislatures, and the organizational structures out there.” That “resistance” the president spoke of is the American people. Over the past two years they’ve become fed up with police defunding policies and soft-on-crime prosecutors, like Manhattan’s Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg. They’ve invested in their own safety. The “resistance” is the 21 million lawful gun buyers in 2020, including more than 8.4 million first-time buyers, and the 18.5 million gun buyers in 2021, with more than 5.4 million first-timers. The ”resistance” has backstopped Congress from passing federal gun control that don’t address crime. It also stopped President Biden’s nominations of paid gun control lobbyist David Chipman to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and banking activist Saule Omarova as Comptroller of the Currency because not even all U.S. Senate Democrats could support them. They would have turned those agencies into bludgeons to hammer the firearm industry to achieve a special interest, gun control agenda. Favorite Falsehoods The president turned his aim from lawful gun owners towards the firearm industry and repeated a lie he’s rehearsed several times before. “Imagine had we had a liabil… [sic] they’re the only industry in America that is exempted from being able to be sued by the public. Only one,” the president protested. “Why the gun manufacturers?… It’s got to end. They’ve got to be held responsible for the things they do that are irresponsible.” He repeated the claim for emphasis. “And I find that outrageous.” This is flatly false. The president knows by now, or his speechwriters do and they don’t bother with the facts. CNN, Politicfact and Washington Post have all checked President Biden on his remark, including after he said it in the White House Rose Garden. CNN cleanly rebuked it. “This is false. Gun manufacturers are not entirely exempt from being sued, nor are they only industry with some liability protections.” Politifact rated it “false.” Washington Post wasn’t kinder, saying, “Biden is wrong to claim the gun industry is totally immune.” The firearm industry has liability protections under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), bipartisan legislation enacted under former President George W. Bush. The firearm industry cannot be held liable when unaffiliated third-parties, in this case criminals, misuse a legal, lawfully sold product. It’s fundamental tort law and is similar to an individual attempting to hold Ford and Budweiser responsible for drunk driving deaths. The law was passed in direct response to lawsuits filed against the industry by control groups and municipalities like the city of New York and the state of New York. These type of lawsuit continue to be filed, now even by foreign governments represented by the same gun control group, the Brady Center. Colonial-Era Error President Biden continued to ignore facts on the Second Amendment and its history. He even erred when speaking about the Revolution-era days and why the right to keep and bear arms was so sacrosanct. “When the amendment was passed, it didn’t say anybody could own a gun and any kind of gun and any kind of weapon,” President Biden remarked. “You couldn’t buy a cannon, and when – the – when this, uh, this amendment was passed.” It did, and does, say the right of the People “shall not be infringed.” Even The Washington Post was brutal in their assignment of “Four Pinocchio’s” to this statement. “Biden has already been fact-checked on this claim — and it’s been deemed false. We have no idea where he conjured up this notion about a ban on cannon ownership in the early days of the Republic, but he needs to stop making this claim.” In fact, the Constitution of early America – before the Bill of Rights, and Second Amendment, was even ratified – granted and encouraged “special waivers” to American merchants and sailors, “allowing private individuals to act as pirates on behalf of the United States against countries engaged in war with it.” Americans given waivers and who owned warships obviously also obtained cannons for use in battle. In fact, it is still perfectly legal to buy a cannon today. It is the presidents’ fundamental misunderstanding and blatant lying about the Second Amendment that informs his gun control agenda and misguided approach to solving the crime problem. Millions of law-abiding Americans took ownership of their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves, understanding the president won’t. First, the NCVS survey only includes people who have been victims of crime.

Second, The FBI data the democrats are using only includes those cases where an arrest AND prosecution happened – and both those happen less than 8%. Where the NCVS is getting info from the victims of these crimes including the other 92% not included in the FBI data the democrats are using. Nikki Haley, who’s only nominally endorsed Trump, delivered a similar message to Fox’s Bret Baier: “The campaign is not going to win talking about crowd sizes. It’s not going to win talking about what race Kamala Harris is. It’s not going to win talking about whether she’s dumb. I think the campaign needs to focus.”

Do a little research (since you claim to be an expert on that) on which cities (as one major example) fail/refuse to do so. And how that number has changed over the last 10 years (and particularly since the “Summer of Love” in 2020). If you look at the CCP (note the party is the country, not the other way around) through conventional economics and cost accounting, the system doesn’t add up. But they always seem to find money from somewhere.

Why should we ignore two “outlier” years?
The events which happened during those two years are very real. And much (nearly all?) of what happened was a direct result of local and state governments refusing to quash destructive rioting, refusing to enforce laws against violent crime, and “enforcing” illegal COVID edicts.
Furthermore, we can see a crystal clear correlation between the most destructive riots plus the greatest increases in violent crime–to cities/states under Democrat leadership. Anyone with four or more brain cells can see that correlation is due to causation.
The obvious conclusion: Democrats allow/enable far more destructive rioting and violent crime than Republicans.
The data show a drastic drop in crime during the period of rioting, reduced policing, and covid-restrictions in 2020 and 2021, then a drastic increase when that period was over. If you want to interpret that as supporting the premise that rioting, reduced police action, and covid-restrictions caused a crime spike (with a mysterious 2-year delay), go ahead.
Keep in mind that we had four straight months of very low crime prior to the St. George Floyd riots. The Cov lockdowns were announced at the end of January 2020. Then the police were told to stand down across the country and allow the mayhem.

The choice of data sets always determines statistical outcomes. And stat fans always love percent changes, even if the datum is less than 1.
Of course the democrats are misleading the public and they are doing it by exploiting a weakness in the FBI data collection.
The FBI data only includes those cases where and arrest AND prosecution (with penalty) happened. If a person was arrested but not prosecuted (no penalty, dismissed on technicality, still awaiting trial, diversion programs, pleas to lower offenses that get dismissed, etc…) it doesn’t appear in the FBI data stats the democrats are exploiting – if a crime happened and there was no arrest it doesn’t appear in the FBI data stats the democrats are exploiting — this is the weakness of the system that democrats are exploiting to make their false claims of lower crime rate.
When Biden came into office two of the first things the democrat politicians did was push to defund police and the so called justice-reform. There was a plan behind this, the plan was to increase the crime rate to implement an anacro-tyranny so people would be more dependent on the old communist concept ‘government will save you comrade, just do what we ask and tell you’ while the government could tell people the crime rate was down. Kind of like Harris likes to tell people biden-nomics has lowered the inflation rate but for some reason the prices have gone up then she says “Oh, its price gouging causing the increased prices” and that’s a blatant lie. Well, the reason prices are up is because Biden exploited a weakness in calculating inflation rate – he didn’t use the real core inflation and dumped so much ‘printed’ money into the economy that it produced a fake inflation rate in the numbers he could tout, but basically the clue its fake is that prices the consumer actually saw steadily increased and that’s because when a government prints money it can not afford and dumps it into the economy it causes prices to increase.
But anyway, like that Biden-nomics the democrats also exploited the FBI data system with their plans for defund police and the so called justice-reform. These plans led to an overall decrease in the number or arrests and prosecutions, and this led to the FBI data weakness being manipulated so democrats could say lower-crime rate.
