Coadbo’s commentary on his everydaycarry.com pocket dump: It doesn’t take a lot of cash…. to have a decent EDC stash!!!! Is that right? I don’t mean the four spears thrown at the end of his sentence. I mean his characterization of his pocket dump as a value-driven proposition. Let’s see . . .
Amazon charges $7.48 plus delivery for his Zebra F-701 Ballpoint Stainless Steel Retractable Pen, Fine Point, 0.7mm, Black Ink, 1-Count. A Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in 9mm msrp’s at $449. The Streamlight TRL-6 laser runs $89. The Gerber multi-tool runs $84.99. The aOakley Men’s Sliver Metals OO9262 Sunglasses retail at $73.80.
I make that $615.27 and counting. (Links to prices here.)
While I would never ask anyone to “cheap out” on tools that can save their life or fix their bicycle, money is a factor for a lot of people. And that’s a big chunk of change.
Too much? How much did you spend on your EDC loadout?
I’m in more than his total just in the gun. I’ve got a couple knives that cost more than some peoples guns.
I’ve also got a $169 gun I carry everyday at work, so it really depends on what works for you, what you’re willing to spend, and what deals you can find.
Field Notes are priceless
Feel-notes be fo ritin down all dem b!tchez fon numbahz…..
Enough that I don’t like to admit it.
Shield- paid 319 new for the gun with night sights and three magazines
Alternate is LCP I paid 170 for new
Concealment express holster- $35
Protrek PRG-270-1 $180
For the Shield Gold Dots- free
LCP- Hornady Critical Defense- 25 bucks per box
Gerber Gator- free
5.11 TPT L2 flashlight- $35
Oakley Gascans or Wiley X valor paid 60 for each
So I didn’t pay very much for the stuff I carry around every day.
I am pretty practical…I just want stuff that works reliably and that I am comfortable with using. Some of that stuff is expensive, some of it not so much. YMMV
Exactly. I was beginning to think I was the only one who was in neither the cheap nor the expensive camp. I can’t afford SureFires or NVGs or fancy Berettas, but I hate junk and have no use for safe queens.
As Lovell says, train hard, train smart, and buy the good stuff.
Dear Blabby,
I carry a $2 knife, a $200 pistol, a $5 flashlight and a special, limited edition Field Notes pad that costs $849.99. Did I overspend on the pistol?
Signed,
Field Fiend from Freeport Florida
You got gyped on the knife.
40 dollar Kershaw assisted opening knife. Leatherman wave I found at a bus stop. 400 dollar S&W 442.
5000 dollars for the 97 4runner I haul my edc pocket dump in.
* $200 PT-111G2 or a $200 RM380
*$30 bulldog holster case or $30 paddle holster.
*$60 Leatherman skeletool
*$35 fisher space pen keychain
I am looking at a Streamlight penlight for ~$30 now
Well being a knife and watch guy….. the sales tax on my watch will buy most handguns .
What kind you got?
Sub-$500 takes care of all my essentials and thus far proved reliable.
I don’t want to do the math, but a belt, gun, ammo, mag, holster, mag pouch, light, knife, and RATS TQ adds up to significantly more than $600. I’d say >$850 for a good EDC, with a cheap gun, is about right.
And no I do not carry that. It’s more of an idealized EDC. =D
Depending on which loadout I use. Most expensive: $1k S&W 627, $70 galco holster, $1.2k iPhone X, $400 Seiko sarb033, $100 belt to hoist up the 627, $70 Spyderco endura wave 4. $40 Olight brass light. Total: $2,880
Least expensive: $200 NAA mini .22lr, $50 Buck 055, $50 Seiko 5, $1.2k iPhone X. Total: $1500
This isn’t a good example of my actual edc. Just an example of certain load outs I could do. This does not include the days I carry more than one gun. I think everyone’s edc value would go up a lot if we include the stupid prices of our phones.
my phone was $49 new….does everything any other smartphone does.
Everyone has their priorities….my love affair with watches is all about square or rectangular faces built prior to 1955….paid a whopping $25.00 for a working, excellent condition Hamilton a few weeks back at a yard sale.
That’s an awesome find. I do love a fine watch as well. I once found a 14kt solid gold Jules Jurgenson manual wind for $2 at a thrift store. That’s about as lucky as I’ll ever get. My most recent watch acquisition is a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. Not a fine watch, but it’s a darn good value.
250 LCP.
16 spare mag.
23 desantis holster
29 Case Stockman (1991)
20 streamlight Stylus
Free wallet.
90 Benchmade AFCK
2 key ring.
Hmmmm. Makes me look like a cheap bastid. Oh well. It works.
The price list misses a few items such as the watch and the flashlight. Or would seem to at least.
One of the things that we miss a lot in this EDC thing when we talk about prices is the overall cost of what people wear in total. Generally speaking I’d guess that once you throw in clothing and stuff most “EDC’s” cost $1000 or more.
We focus on the gear but clothing, at least decently clothing, isn’t cheap.
Mine are cheap.
15 dollar jeans and 25 dollar shirt.
Of course the belt and shoes are 50 bucks each.
Who needs underwear? Ha
How much is that single cartridge of ammunition. Is this Barney fife’s dump.
I’m thinking of submitting an article to TTAG called “Hooking For Field Notes.”
Does that answer your question?
tt33(54-1)-$125, purchased 1991 IWB holster gift 2017. Buck 110 $? purchased 1986. , Zippo gift,2004 … So maybe $150 for EDC
From all I read Jon in CO summed it all up perfectly in six words: ” depends on WHAT WORKS FOR YOU ” .
I recently added a $50 flashlight, so I could very easily get by cheaper. My cost will go down once I re-edge my Benchmade AFO and switch to it from my current smaller, manually operated Benchmade, but that’s because I got it used, as part of a lot in an auction. I’ve sold some of the other blades from the lot, so technically I made money acquiring that knife.
Even with gun and watch, I’d probably come in under $1k with any configuration of my current gear.
$429 TP9SF Elite
$319 Shield
I did buy a Sig P938 with the intent to daily carry it but it’s such a nice gun and pricey enough to p*ss me off if it got scratched/damaged/confiscated (by the police after an ‘event’) that I bought a Bodyguard M&P 380 (no laser) instead. So, a quick rundown:-
$300 S&W M&P Bodyguard .380
$100 (ish) Benchmade Mini Griptillian
$25 Remora ‘Sticky’ holster
$7 Remora sticky magazine pouch
$10 (ish) 13 rounds of Hornady American Gunner 90gr XTP
$free work iPhone 8
$1000 (ish) Omega Seamaster Professional Chronometer (a treat to myself when I landed an offshore job many years ago)
I’m coming in around $450 and that’s with gun, holster, wallet, pocket knife, flashlight, spare mag and ammo. That’s with an $80 knife I got for Christmas a few years back so I could bring it down carrying a less expensive knife. The phone my company provides for me cost more than my total EDC without it.
Investing in good gear through the years is now a down side? There is no end to your nitpicking. Do you partake in the girls Avon gossip parties too?
