“What does the number 2,432,448 mean to you?” an email blast in my inbox asks. “To the team here at Everytown for Gun Safety, that’s the number of postcards we’ll be delivering to U.S. senators, representatives and governors in every state over the next few weeks. Why? Because dedicated supporters like you took a stand after the shootings in Santa Barbara, CA to declare “Not One More” — and to remind your elected officials that you’re counting on them to take action to reduce gun violence in this country.” Needless to say, the effort does not represent 2,432,448 individual supporters sending individual cards. Quite how many honest-to-God people have OK’ed Everytown’s tree-killing campaign is a secret. In fact, one wonders . . .

how much this will cost. And, equally, how the civilian disarmament group’s fund-raising aspect is going. Here’s the pitch:

We’ve done the math, and it’s going to cost about 25 cents to deliver each postcard. Here’s how your gift can help:

$12.50 covers 50 postcards (One for every Governor!)
$25 covers 100 postcards (That’s the whole U.S. Senate!)
$133.75 covers postcards to every member of Congress (535)

I ask this because the mainstream media trumpeted the fact that Michael Bloomberg, Everytown’s paterfamilias, is pumping $50m into the cause. That’s got to be a strong disincentive for everyday pro-gun control folks who’ve been asked to open their wallet. Speaking of which . . .

Where is Bloomberg spending the money?

We here at the sharp end haven’t noticed any Everytown anti-gun media blitz since Mayor Mike went public with his purse strings thing. Or any “grass-roots” activity either. In fact, Everytown’s recent Brooklyn Bridge demo fell well short of its thousand-people promise. Surely, a hundred thousand dollars here and there could have swelled those numbers to create a suitably impressive display.

It’s certainly possible that Mayor Mike’s buying faux Facebook followers. Everytown’s FB page started life with over 400k “likes.” It’s weekly growth beats that of TTAG – which I find highly implausible. We’ve posted 154 times compared to Everytown’s eight. Anyway, the cost of that effort – should it be so – wouldn’t even dent the interest on Bloomberg’s $50m.

Maybe Hizzoner is standing pat until the 2014 elections kick into high gear, when he’ll dump money into pro-gun pols’ campaign coffers and pay big bucks for anti-gun ads. Or maybe Bloomberg’s promise was just smoke and mirrors. After all, he didn’t say over what period the $50m would be spent.

False war? Sun Tsu told us “All warfare is based on deception.” All civilian disarmament certainly is. Then again, he advises us to “Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.” Watch the skies people. Watch the skies.

  1. I’m waiting for some form letter thank you from my representative for a postcard I did not send or authorize….

  2. The Bill Paying Billionaire bought almost two and a half million postcards but he does not have the money for stamps? I wonder if they will all have the same return address. When this idiotic scam is exposed, what little credibility Everytown for Gun Control has will evaporate.

  3. EVERYTOWN is a joke and I guarantee no pols on the fence about gun control will side with them over organizations with actual members ( NRA, SAF and others). we must all do our part to make Bloomberg’s money tainted for any pol who takes it (like in Colorado).

  4. Direct mail marketing campaigns usually have a response rate of less than 1%, not very impressive.

  5. How did they get to 2,432,448?

Well, first, figure the average dimwitted supporter decides she’s going to send a postcard for every one of the 5.2 members of her family (that’s her, her spouse, 2.2 kids, and the dog), rounded up, of course, because you can’t send 0.2 postcards.

Then, figure that all of their couple thousand total supporters do that, that adds up to… hmm… 12,000 cards.

    Wait, that’s not nearly enough.

“Screw it, just add a couple million, and we’ll say that’s how many we got.”

  6. Progtard junk mail…yeah, that will work…go for it Bloomie.
In fact, why dont you double, triple or even go 10X. Spend all that $50Mil.

  7. I would be surprised if they actually sent that many.
I read their link thing where all I had to do was fill out a form and it would generate a postcard to my state rep, governor, senator and congressman.
So that’s 4 postcards per person. More for some states I’m guessing. So that’s 608,112 people filling out the online form.
Then subtract the ones that filled it out two or three times…
Then subtract the women who filled out forms for their husbands and kids, and you’re back to the original 147 moms.
See, it’s the new common core math! As long as you can make sense to you, it’s correct. A+ class!

  8. “Not one more”. What happens to that slogan when the next cretin simply stabs a bunch of people to death? I guess since it’s a knife, not a gun , Nanny and his minions won’t be heard from.

  9. Bloombag didn’t get to be one of the richest men in the world by giving away money. He buys things. Like New York City. It cost him $650 million. Chump change for chumps.

  10. What is so funny about this, is that they are resorting to snail mail because if they used the internet (you know, the thing everyone uses now) they would get buried under pro gun counter e-mails. In this instance, the oh so progressive and modern intellectuals have no choice but to use outdated technology because they know their opposition has an advantage with social media, where ironically their movement was born.

  11. Naw, guys, they really got us on this one! Damn, Everytown, you done beat us with your postcard blitz! A couple more all-out NOT ONE MORE rally cries 4 months before midterm elections like this, and we’re gonna be on the ropes! Whatever you do, don’t junk mail the Senators! Oh woe is us!

  12. “What does the number 2,432,448 mean to you?”

    Let me guess…

One fifth the number of helpless and disarmed civilians slaughtered by the Nazis?

One fiftieth the number of helpless and disarmed civilians slaughtered by various Socialists in the last 100 years?

  13. We are advised to not judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few  lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL Gun Owners by the  actions of a few lunatics.  Funny how that works.

  14. I think it’s simple….they NEED to be a grassroots organization so they can say,

“Look at all the people who support us! We did this mass mailing and we got people to support sending 2,432,448 postcards to support our cause! Now you HAVE to listen to us instead of the NRA!”

They haven’t a leg to stand on, but as everyone knows, perception is everything. And with snail mail, no electronic trail of how many actually donated.

    • and the 2.5 (rounded) is still only half of the number of card carrying NRA members…and that doesn’t even include the NRA “supporters” who haven’t joined…

  15. Don’t MOST people throw their JUNK MAIL away these days? I know I do. And b. Hussain sure didn’t get erected dear leader with snail mail.

  16. Unfortunately in our system of government it’s the loudest (and best-funded) voice that’s heard. And they’re louder. And better funded.

  17. How about a campaign in response which sends two postcards per politicians per state? Or thirty-one postcards per month? Dwarf their campaign. Hire a decent agency. Put some real coin into it. Present gun-owners in a confident light. Project a positive image, listing all the right reasons.

  18. I wish I would get a post card, because I’d take it in the bathroom and symbolically wipe my ass with it.

  19. So what exactly does it mean and where are they from, if the local tv news stations are saying in news stories, that 16,??? post cards are being delivered to the Governor at the State Capitol?

  20. The NRA should do a follow up of it’s own, only we could print “verified registered voter” under each return address.

    • Awesome Doug! I’m a life member myself. Anyone who needs to join (and you should regardless of whether or not you disagree with them on certain issues) should use this site I got off a card with my last Ruger http://www.nra.org/ruger

Do it!!! Whether you like them or not the more backing they have the better off we all are.

  21. Where is Bloomberg spending the money?

Not on this silliness from the look of things. I’d bet more like bribes, uh, “Campaign Contributions.” Someone else said “He buys things.” So true. And he looks for “bang for the buck.” NOT some BS post card campaign.

  22. As a comparison of how children are killed…

Cases that automobiles are involved or associated in deaths. Confiscate automobiles?
I just saw a report on the “Today Show”. 13 children have died so far this year,
due to being forgotten and left in Hot cars.
Since 1998 720 children have died. Averaging 38 children a year.
Where’s the cry “NOT ONE MORE” for those children?

  23. I’d like to know ow they are sending post cards for $.25 when the Post Office says that they are charging $.34 for a stamp to send one? If it is prepaid postage, for bulk rates, then is that what the “contributions” are for? What about the cost of printing these ? This has to be subsidized somehow, most likely by his holiness the former mayor of NY.
