ROOSTER! If just reading that got your heart racing a little bit, you’re not alone. Bird season’s only about 60 days away. And just in time, Federal Premium’s added a few new load options to their excellent Hi-Bird Upland shotgun ammo line.
Federal Premium Adds New Load Options for Hi-Bird Upland Shotshells
ANOKA, Minnesota – August 21, 2018 – Federal Premium has added new shot sizes to its popular Hi-Bird line of upland shotshells. The loads combine speed, hard-hitting pellets and a specialized wad to fold the highest doves, crows and pigeons, as well as pheasants and the most challenging upland birds. This includes various new 12-gauge loadings of shot sizes No. 4, 5 and 8. Shipments of this ammunition are being delivered to dealers now.
The powerful Hi-Bird loads’ two-piece wad features SoftCell technology to decrease perceived recoil and produce more consistent long-range patterns. Plus, its lead shot is engineered for the optimum blend of hardness and density. The result is dense long-range patterns with more downrange energy.

Dove is a lot closer than 60 days. Can’t wait. And then there’s quail.
True. To me, birds means pheasants. Guess I’m a speciesist.
Let’s not forget the elusive chukar!
I have pretty much stopped hunting early season chukars. It is almost impossible to carry enough water for yourself and the dogs. If you hunt along a river the rattlesnakes are thick in such places like in Hells Canyon. Granted it is fun to float the river and hunt but a friend had his dog bitten and $2,000 worth of vet bills later the dog died. That was made think hard about early season chukars.
I kind of wonder why Federal isn’t offering this load in 6’s, the do everything size. 6’s are fine when hunting where one can run into pheasant, quail, huns or chukars. Chukars only, I use nickel plated 7’s. I have Ballistic Products recipe that launches a 1 1/8 ounce load out of a 2 /34″ 20 gauge shell at over 1300 fps. Knocks them dead. I like the 2 3/4″ shell because I can get 6 of them in my Benelli if I ghost load one on the carrier. The extra shells come in handy for staggered flushes which chukars are apt to do.
I’m with Jim.
My first though was, no 6s or 7 1/2?
5 to 8 is a big gap in shot performance.
Here in CA pheasant starts sometime in Nov. About the 11th. Good time of year. This year I added waterfowl tags to my license. I’m not a duck hunter but last year I kept getting buzzed by ducks and geese while I was hunting other birds.
I figure if they’re going to make it easy for me, why not?
Make sure to keep some steel or notox with you or dem government get mad
In CA we cannot hunt with lead. Period.
I’ve always laughed at the obsurdity of that. You can dig it up, but heaven forbid you put it back.
And the pseudo science that says lead pellets contaminate the animals? The only animals lead shot contaminates are the ones we shoot.
The only animals lead shot contaminates are the ones we shoot.
And the birds that eat the ones which get away, according to ‘research’.
Having never read such research with a critical eye, I can’t pretend to know whether its conclusions indicate reality or fantasy, but the researchers’ motives are highly suspect.
Can’t wait to try the Feds out. Personally thi season will mostly be about the forgotten 10gauge. Currently loading a pet recipe that uses 2 1/8 oz #7 lead with a velocity of 1255. I’ve named them Reapers. It’s all about pellet count and the 10g can push double the amount of lead. The Tomahawk loads blaze out 2oz #6 shot with devastation happening at 50-60 yards
Only thing I have is yum ducks!
Fondly remember my dad’s last duty station with US Air Force base was El Paso Texas.
Went hunting with some of his friends and brought home a couple of ducks. Who knows how my mom knew how to cook them, but they were delicious.
Thank you for indulging me for a really nice memory of my dad. Over and out
