That’s the first trailer for the upcoming feature flick, Gangster Squad. The original cut of the film had a scene (at the 2:00 mark, above) where machine gun wielding hoods shoot their way through the movie screen at Grauman’s Chinese Theater and open up on the crowd. And that was a case of art imitating life just a little too closely for the movie’s producers. So after a re-write and some newly filmed scenes, the flick has been sanitized for your protection. But possibly in an ill-advised homage to Dick Tracy, Sean Penn’s character, Mickey Cohen, bears a disturbing resemblance to Pruneface in both the original and the second (after the jump) trailers. As the character says, “You’re gonna be beggin’ for a bullet before it’s over.” Unless the movie’s better than the previews, he’s probably right.

  1. Wow that looks like a horrible movie. Thank goodness they took an uncomfortable scene out of a movie that portrays cops as ruthless thugs that become an organized crime unit to blow the shit out of organized crime.

At least Emma Stone looks hot as usual.

  2. Off the top of my head the only movie I can think of that has a theater shoot out is “Replacement Killers”. But that’s a John Woo film and his stuff is so over the top as to be cartoonish.

Let’s see, we’ve had these mass shootings at schools, theaters, restuarants, malls and on commuter trains. And at churches and at sporting events. If we sanitize movies based on where real life shootings have occured we me have to stop making “gunfight” movies.

  3. Its encouraging to see Hollywood show some concern for their audience by removing such an uncomfortable scene. Of course, they could take that concern for their audience to the next logical level and cut the entire movie from release.
