Gear Review: KCT Kydex MOLLE-Link D.C.U

I recently reviewed KCT’s MOLLE-Link holster. It’s a fine little rig, and definitely my favorite way of sticking a pistol to a MOLLE-backed rig of any sort. KCT was also nice enough to make up a matching magazine carrier for my upcoming race through the desert. They call it the Dual Carrier Unit (D.C.U) and it works pretty well out in the field . . .

Like all the other KCT pieces of gear, it can be had in twenty-five different colors including this cornea punching orange. And like the KCT holster I tested out, it is a well built piece of gear that attaches to MOLLE with relative ease. Once it is snapped into place, it isn’t going anywhere.

They make a version without the pistol mag carrier attached that got sent along as well. In the interest of saving electrons, I’m not doing a separate review, other than to mention that it exists and it works very well. I only own PMAGs and steel magazines for my AR 15 and both fit nicely into both carriers. There seems to be a decent amount of friction holding things in place, but not “snap” like you get in a properly tuned holster. Either way, both versions held my mags tight when I got to running, but were willing to give them up when it came time to reload.

The only problem I had with the D.C.U is shown above. Kydex has many benefits, but it is not the strongest material that has ever been made by the hands of man. Subsequently, a loaded pistol magazine tends to flop around on a run setting up a nice little metronome sound. This is helpful for keeping temp, but ultimately stresses the Kydex. It will inevitably fail, and because I hang out with Murphy all the time, it will happen when I least expect it.

I REALLY like the functionality this provides so I’ve made due by using a stout epoxy to glue the pistol mag carrier to the rifle mag carrier. What it lacks in elegance, it makes up for in functionality. When I emailed the guys at KCT, they acknowledged that the D.C.U does that, and that they usually wrap a loop of shock cord through the rivet holes to keep everything in place. I don’t love that solution, and would love to see a future revision that finds a stouter and more permanent solution.

It does an admirable job of holding magazines, and is about as unobtrusive as you can make a stacked mag holder. Unfortunately, the pistol mag portion bounces around too much for my liking. My hope is that the guys at KCT can come out with a revision that fixes this problem. The regular magazine holder suffers from none of these issues and gets a solid five star rating.
