CMMG came out to SHOT Show’s Range Day with a giggle switch-equipped Mk47 Mutant, and I believe we all took it for a spin. I finally stumbled up to their booth near the very end of the day, and this thing was still running strong after what I assume was many thousands of rounds. I’d chalk this up to two things . . .

First, the Mutants are designed to run AK-47 magazines. While there are now a handful of 7.62×39 mags that do function well in a standard AR-15 lower receiver, the historical success rate with this has been rather low. Feeding is better from an actual AK-47 mag, which begins its “banana” curve sooner.

Second, CMMG’s upper is designed to use a bolt that was originally their Mk3, .308 bolt. This is supposed to resolve the common issue of broken bolt lugs when a 5.56 bolt is hogged out to fit that 7.62 cartridge base diameter.

At any rate, add their SV Brake and it’s a controllable, soft-shooting 7.62×39 gun.

  1. Be interesting to do a stare and compare between that dealer sample Mutant and one equipped with a Franklin BFS.

Can someone please point me in the direction of one of these working 7.62×39 AR mag unicorns? I’ve never found a 30 round 7.62×39 magazine that was designed for an AR magwell and fed properly. I still have a 7.62×39 barrel for my XCR sitting in a corner of my safe, which I never bother with because I can’t find decent mags that work with it.

  3. I use C-products/ASC mags for my WW SRC 7.62x39mm and they feed right everytime. However the gun has failure to fires every other round when using standard wolf ammo. I have tried different bolts and the issue is still present. Can’t figure out the fix.

    • You might want to try a stiffer hammer spring. I think the Russian brands tend to use harder primers.

      • Forgot to mention if your using a short barrel 7 -10 inch I ‘feel” that you should use a muzzel device that creates some back pressure. I use the flaming pig on my 7 inch pistol. Also I’ve heard that opening up the gas port to .80 or so helps too. Mine works with C products mags and even the 30 rd Pro mag mags. I have not tried the ASC mags yet. I can load 5 rounds in a 20 round .223 mag and it works too. Love mine.

  4. The ASC mags work perfectly.
    I have had a Colt Lightweight sporter in 7.62 X 39 since 1995.
Frankenmags, C products and ASC all work fine.
Any .223 AR magazine will run when loaded with 5 rounds of x 39.
The ASC ones will work with 30 rounds of 7.62 x 39

  5. Has anybody broken their bolt?? I’ve heard of this but just got mine and only have 200-300 rds thru it.
Mine has the PSA bolt. PSA Upper,Lower and barrel. I like upgraded power and the super CHEAP steel cased ammo. Accuraccy is fantastic. @ 50 yards with a cheap red dot I can shoot a 5 shot group I can cover with my thumb, out of a 7 inch barrel! But it’s from a rest and using the arm thingy wrong. This is the only “AR” in my box-o-toys. Love it. I was very suprised that the “Pro Mag” 30 rounder worked without a hickup.

  6. The MK3 bolt is $139. no carrier. Website does not state WHAT it fits, may be the .308???? Gotta love those high end webpages.
