Idaho is currently considering constitutional carry. theepochtimes.com reports that Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen and Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand have come out against gun rights restoration. They claim constitutional carry would make their jobs tougher. Au contraire, says Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler. “If you’re a criminal you’re not going to go and follow through and get a concealed weapons permit. If you’re going to commit a crime then you’re just going to commit a crime.” Sheriff Wheeler rejects the idea that Constitutional Carry would make policing more difficult or dangerous with the following piercing (yet welcome) glimpse into the obvious . . .
Any stop we initiate, we ask if they have a weapon. Somebody having a concealed weapons permit is not going to prohibit or change our tactics. And if they aren’t suppose to have that weapon, we’ll find out when we run them through our computers.
You want common sense? You got it. And for that Sheriff Wheeler gets The Truth About Guns Gun Hero of the Day nod.

Idaho folks need to get rid of the police state there as soon as possible. The police and sheriff’s offices in many parts of the state have a terrible and gruesome record of abuse, theft, lies and outright murder. I sure can’t see any of them going for permitless carry any time soon.
Here’s just one example, and by far not the worst. http://freedominourtime.blogspot.com/2015/02/an-innocent-man-scott-molens.html
yikes, that story sounds awful.
Holy crap! That is a helluva corruption story.
Look through the archives at that blog. You’ll see a lot of horror stories, and quite a few from Idaho. All well documented and researched too.
Arapahoe County in Colorado s identical in their typical conduct.
You really should send out an award for these rather than IGOD trophies.
Reward good behavior not bad with something nice.
Even the supposedly good guys like to wave the bloody shirt.
Time has proven yet again and again. If your not inclined to be a criminal having a CCP or not isn’t going to make you one.
I’m just a simple fella without a lot of education but the way I see it is that constitutional carry is the law of all 50 states and any territories under our flag.
Now, getting the pols to agree with the way I see it may not be so easy.
Getting the politicians and bureaucrats to see it is rather easy. All you have to do is show them that constitutional carry is good for them. And what is good for them? Their jobs and their cushy lives.
So, show them that upholding the constitution and their oath of office is good for their jobs and cushy lives … and show them that enforcing unconstitutional laws that violate our human dignity is very, very bad for their jobs and cushy lives. Then they will stop violating the constitution and our human dignity. The solution really is that simple and easy.
The hard part is getting 2% of firearms owners to unequivocally commit to showing the politicians and bureaucrats that violating the U.S. and state Constitutions and their human dignity is very, very bad for their jobs and cushy lives.
Hey, we’ve all been saying that for years. Are we all gun heroes too?
Seems like Sheriff Wheeler loves his computers, they help him distinguish between good guys and bad guys.
His statement tells me he wouldn’t be too keen on constitutional carry in his state.
Well, that is N. Idaho. Just south of Boundary County, which is the site of the Ruby Ridge siege, and the county seat is Sandpoint, birthplace of Sarah Palin. We spend half the year in NW MT, and the closest Wal-Mart is there (which for this blog, means some of the cheapest ammo), so I am through that county every couple weeks.Still, money is flowing into the county, with a lot of people buying second homes and the like, and the likely result, I expect, is a swing to the left (Idaho probably can’t swing to the right), and even a bit against gun rights. We shall see. (Bonner County surrounds Lake Pend Oreille, maybe the nicest lake in the state, it has some nice ski areas close by, and also has good hunting).
“Any stop we initiate, we ask if they have a weapon. Somebody having a concealed weapons permit is not going to prohibit or change our tactics.”
No, but someone who has gone through the various hurdles to get that permit (background check, etc) is a lot less likely to be a criminal. Doesn’t mean constitutional carry is bad, just that a permit isn’t completely worthless in terms of policing.
It’s called constitutional carry for a reason. Those opposed to it should just leave those areas of the world where the constitution applies.

Must Inform Officer Immediately on Contact By Law? – NO
I think he means that the cops would see if the person they stopped had any disqualifying factors for firearms possession in the for of convictions or warrants in the course of running their name through the computer.
