While their rifle line might not have expanded very much this year, SIG SAUER’s Electro-Optics is growing. Adding onto the line of TANGO6 “tactical” scopes, SIG is adding a 5-30×56 scope for longer range shooting. They had one on display at their media day and I had an opportunity to put it to the test.
First and foremost, the styling on the optic is definitely SIG SAUER sharp. It fits well with their design concept for their rifles and handguns, and would be comfortable on any “tactical” style rifle. All the features you’d want are there: locking turrets, first focal plane reticles, and grippy feeling control knobs.
On the inside SIG SAUER has installed their latest reticle: the DEV-L MOA. Much in the style of the Horus reticle configurations, this grid pattern allows for easy hold-overs on long range targets without needing to dial the turrets. Also of note: the “LEVELPLEX” function, which provides in-scope guidance on when the scope is actually level to ensure the most accurate shots.
I like the specs. I like the way it feels. And I like how easy it is to use on the range. I’ll have to ask for one for a proper long-term test soon. Stand by.
MRSP?
EDIT: google suggests it’s a penny shy of $2400…
That’s way too much money for me to choose the new and untested SIG optic over a tried and true option like a Leupold, Trijicon, or Vortex. Or, you could spend another $1K and get into some top-tier optics like US Optics, Nightforce, or even Kahles or Schmidt Bender.
I own several SIG products, and while the quality is above average, I’ve never found one that didn’t leave room for improvement.
You also haven’t spent $2400+ on a Sig optic…
Been “standing by” for a standalone Romeo1 for about 2 years now.
“SIG is adding a 5-30×56 scope for longer range shooting”. Got to love that a “longer range” 30X scope is on an AR. Zoom in all you want, shoot out to 1K and beyond all you want. It’ll be like a pebble hitting someone in the pinky.
The 5.56 peters out pretty fast, but the .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor are still supersonic at 1000 yards.
I put a Bushnell ERS 3.5-21x FDE on a 300 BLK AR. The 21x magnification at 100 yards meant I didn’t need a spotting scope. I could fire shots, make measurements with the FFP reticle, and dial in corrections without even needing to leave the bench.
Sure, that scope on an AR means a lot of extra weight, but I don’t mind heavy guns and optics. They tend to help out in the accuracy department.
Very much agreed Accur81, it does help with the accuracy… but a 30X scope on a 5.56/223?
I have a scope on my AR pattern rifle as well… It’s a LR-308. The AR in the presser didn’t look like a AR-10/LR-308 pattern setup.
I don’t know where you got the idea that 223 has nothing left at 1000 yard. If you are so convinced, stand at 1000 yard I’ll shoot you with a 77 grain 223.
Dan in Colorado. Sir, you have a lot to learn about firearms in general and long range shooting.
