Don’t know why this one missed the bigass list of pending gun legislation we had a couple days back, but so it did. Steve Stockman, Republican congressman from Texas, introduced the legislation known as HR 35 on the first day of the new congressional session. While the full text isn’t yet available, we’re pretty sure that the goal is to repeal the gun free schools legislation since that’s what the Gun Owners of America is rolling with. And they seem to be rolling pretty hard . . .
They even have a website set up where you can email your representatives about this specific bill. Specifically right here.
this might be a good time to remind those of you who missed it the first time that TTAG recently held a simulated school shooting that looked at a couple scenarios involving armed teachers, and based on the results I really don’t see any way that it wouldn’t reduce the body count. But if a recent debate with New York mothers is any indication, logic isn’t running the show at the moment.

I emailed my “rep”…
Ron Barber, AZ…
Unfortunately, that will fall on deaf ears…
Ron Barber? Are you frickin kidding me? Barber ain’t gonna listen or do anything to support us, I was hoping on someone else to be our representative
Also if i didnt mention it, I am an arizonan too and didnt vote for barber.
I’m also in Barber’s district. I’m so glad (sarcastically) that he kept finding boxes of ballots with his name on them. I really feel there were shenanigans in that specific election.
Call me crass, the only reason Barber won (if in fact there were no shenanigans) was on the sympathy vote…
And it must be real nice to receive not only a state pension but also the salary for being a congress critter..
I had dinner with Steve Stockman this past November, the weekend after he was elected. Nice guy. He fell asleep! Must have been tired from all the campaigning.
I’m glad to see he’s doing good work already.
ah slipped your date a roofie i see 🙂
thanks for the info! that link to email your rep is broken though
SURELY we are not going to see an end to the grabbers’ favorite tool of all, the school shooting, are we? HOW WILL THEY BAN GUNS without school shootings to inflame public insensibilities?
the psychos will still have govt buildings to work with. Can’t be all that bad.
Surely the Brady Bunch and MAIG offices and Beards bunch must be gun free zones? Gives the loonies analternate target if we harden the schools.
Might even be why the anti’s are against arming the schools. It takes a layer of protection away from them.
I e-mailed my representative. I reduced the length of the form letter in case any of the aids or my representative actually reads it. Anyone who is interested in using my verbage is welcome to copy and paste.
To my representative:
I hope you will cosponsor H.R. 35, the Safe Schools Act of 2013.
Several school shootings have clearly demonstrated that gun bans do not work. And yet federal law continues to criminalize responsible law abiding citizens who want to be armed for the simple purpose of defending themselves and the people around them.
Many in government are either armed themselves or enjoy armed guards for their personal protection, and yet they deny the same protection for the responsible adults who work with children in our schools. This double standard is obscene.
Congressman Steve Stockman has introduced H.R. 35, which would allow principals, teachers, and staff to possess firearms in order to defend their students.
It is time to protect our children with the same tools and the same zeal we use to protect our congressmen. It is time to pass the Stockman bill and give real protection to our children.
Please cosponsor H.R. 35, the Stockman repeal of the gun-free school zone ban.
i’ve been sending letters and they’ve been getting shorter and shorter, in the hope that they are actually read. i’m getting really close to just writing the following:
Dear Sir/Madame-
I am a one-issue voter and responsible gun owner. If you don’t completely protect my 2nd amendment rights, neither myself, my friends, or my family will vote for you next election.
Please do the right thing. We thank you for your service, and keep up the good work.
-TomM
Short and sweet. I like it!
Hooray for Rep. Stockman and may his tribe increase!
Forwarded this to Tom Cole and I’ve sent some very nice emails to Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn asking them to resist the big city elites.
If Coburn had his way they’d be handing guns out to every Okie who could pull a trigger so I think the email was a little redundant but I sent it anyway.
It’s logical and rational, and therefore the enemy of government. Won’t pass.
ROTFL at the bit about Stockman falling asleep at dinner… this is a guy who early in his career did some kind of misdemeanor stupidity, and when he checked into the Harris County Jail for his weekend of hard time they found some Valium hidden in his skivvies. Hell, Steve, jail makes EVERYBODY nervous. I haven’t been laughing at Steve for as long as at Shelia Jackson Lee, only because he hasn’t been making an ass out of himself for as long, but they are flip sides of the same coin… anything-for-publicity Texas politicians. Just because a Texas Congressweasel does something that agrees with your bumper stickers doen’t change the fact that if he (or she) was any dumber they would need watering three times a week. Steve and Shelia are classic examples.
That form letter was easy to set up and send. Props to GOA for realizing that most Americans are lazy, so the best way to get people to be active is the take all the work out of it. I bet this gets lots of letters sent.
A well informed person I know syaid it very clearly:
Why do we guard our money with guns, but our children with (no guns allowed/GFSZ) signs?
A pro-gun Rpublican from Texas?!
Seriously, though, I’m going to support this.
By the way, sending letters to reps and senators is not completely useless. You tie up their aides, many of whom are required to log and respond to each unique letter. This from a former WI aide who had to write response letters.
Yeah, I figured you would be talking about your “simulation” already. Here is my idea of the simulation you should do: Collect a bunch of inexperienced gun owners in a school, and sit them down in a classroom and teach them math, or literature, or science, or whatever.
Don’t have any shooters. Tell them you might, but don’t. Then, after 67,000 years, representing the percentage of schools that do not get shot up, report back on the number of accidental shootings.
You don’t even have to include the number of fistfights that end up in shootings, because that could happen anywhere. I am still willing to bet that you would end up with an average of about one shooting every ten years, or about 670 shootings in total.
This percentage is pretty conservative, considering how many people are shot at gun shows every year by experienced gun owners in controlled conditions.
On what planet does this make children safer?
This is the classic example where you can’t have an argument both ways. Shootings in schools are very rare. If an AWB is an over-reaction, then arming teachers is an over-reaction times 100.
I don’t have school age kids, but if I did, I’d rather have then around guns than around you.
So, you agree an AWB is an over reaction. Arming schools doesn’t have to mean teachers with guns in classrooms. If you want to protect the kids then get busy coming up with real world solutions. You seem like an intelligent guy, put some of that grey matter to work coming up with a useful solution to the problem.
If all your going to do is lurk here and make snarky remarks, then you’re part of the problem, not the solution.
If gun control laws could work it would take generations to have an effect. If. In the meantime we need real solutions to the problem.
JWM: I agree with you that an AWB is an over-reaction. As many people have pointed out, it won’t work. That is why I come to sites like this, because there are a lot of people here who know a lot about guns.
My first suggestion would be to ban all high-capacity (anything over 10) magazines except to people who are willing to get them licensed and insured. I would then limit gun purchases to one per month, with the same exception. I would put a tax on ammo, and use the money to beef up security at schools, airports, water plants and so on. I would require background checks on every gun purchase, even between private collectors at gun shows.
No one measure will prevent a determined murderer, but taken together, a series of small steps will prevent many, many needless killings.
LBD, for the sake of argument let’s say you get your new laws. How long before they start to have any effect? If at all. In the meantime there’s over 300+ million guns already out there with tons of ammo.
Your thought on taxing ammo spreads the tax money to cover a lot more than schools. How big a tax would you need? At what point does shooting become a hobby for the wealthy elite?
And in the meantime, the schools are still undefended. I have yet to see a pol or an anti, and I’m classing you as an anti, say we need armed people on our school grounds to protect our kids. All I hear is that more guns won’t protect us.
The guns are already out there. Any plan that doesn’t start with arming school staff or community volunteers is not really a plan to protect our kids.
JWM, In the legislative suggestions I mentioned, part of the tax on ammo would go to additional police protection. Admittedly, it is spread pretty thin, but that is still a huge increase over what we have now, which is more or less nothing.
New laws would take a while to take effect, but eventually they would make a difference.
The laws that are being proposed now won’t help for two reasons: First, an AWB is a very limited approach to a very large problem. Second, by using a state-by-state approach, the “anti’s” are insuring that nothing will get done.
Dave, how many school shootings have been prevented by this ban on legally carried guns in schools? Wait, you mean to tell me that a SIGN doesnt stop a person hellbent on murder?
Josh – That is an interesting question. Irrelevant, but interesting. The point that I was making was about accidental shootings. Which usually means that the shooter was not “hellbent on murder”.
But for the sake of argument, lets say that we only prevent one accidental shooting per year per 1000 schools. That is 65 shootings per year prevented just by putting up a sign that says: “No guns”.
Dave, most people I know who carry are very well trained. Probably better trained than most police officers, and you blindly trust them to carry guns. Many permit holders are former military/police themselves. Several states require a training course to be passed before a permit is issued.
See Dave, the thing about people who take on the monumental responsibility of protecting themselves and their loved ones with deadly force if needed is they tend to take it seriously, and train accordingly.
Josh, I agree with you that most people who are gun enthusiasts are fairly well trained. And yet there are still 15,000 accidental shooting injuries in the U.S. each year, with about 600 fatalities.
Imagine how bad it would be if we added more guns to the mix without requiring more training.
Dave-How many of those people are: A). Not children. B). Not improperly labeled suicides (such as a recent story of a cops suicide being labeled an accident for his family to be able to collect his pension). C). By people who have a carry permit. I would hazard a guess that of the 15,000 accidents, more than half are children. Out of the remaining 7500 I bet less than 1% of those people have carry permits.
Josh, I suppose that could be true. Or it could be completely wrong. It could be that people with CCP are more likely to have guns on them, and actually more likely to have accidents.
In states like mine, where no training at all is required to get a CCP, it seems unlikely that people who get a CCP will magically become more responsible than they were the day before.
As far as this week, though, the first story that comes to mind is:
http://www.kansascity.com/2013/01/08/4000708/officials-review-accidental-shooting.html
That is hardly a unique story though. My impression is that the papers are filled with them.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57478931-504083/accidental-gunfire-at-dallas-walmart-injures-four-gun-owner-had-permit/

This one is a few years old, but a friend of mine was in the restaurant at the time: http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2011-05-24/news/os-4-hurt-in-smokey-bones-shooting-20110524_1_accidental-shooting-smokey-bones-orlando-police
The thing each of these stories had in common is that the gun owner had a CCP, and it did not keep them from getting the IGOTD, or whatever that award is called.
This makes children safer on planet earth. ///Yeah, children “could” get shot by a guard, or.. they positivly get shot by a deranged killer. What to do, what to do. That sure is a tough one lbd, Randy
Randy: In your simulation, did you have “guards”, or did you have “armed teachers”? Because if your simulation used armed guards and everyone else was gun-free, then my apologies for misunderstanding the simulation.
He’s just pissy because people carrying in schools might prevent dozens of children from dying. Then what would he use to push his agenda of oppression and control over others?
You can’t argue logic with the irrational, sense with the insane, or morality with the sociopathic.
Yes, with guns around you can’t tell the kids that there are no bad people, that every one is nice & that guns will just hurt model citizens. With guns around, before you know it they won’t be able to brainwash the youngsters anymore, Randy
Silver: One of the lowest forms of argument is to pretend that you know why I believe something. If you disagree with me, then state your reasons. To make an insulting straw argument about my motives is ignorant. You don’t know me, and you don’t know where my opinions come from.
You are correct to point out that school shootings are exceedingly rare. So is violent crime in most places in this country. I carry a handgun to improve those odds in the places where it’s legal for me to carry. Allowing me to carry in schools would do the same.
Greg, I don’t know you, so for all I know you may be one of those people who make society more safe when he is armed.
I am just saying that there are other people who don’t.
On a planet where the bad guy gets shot before be kills 27 people.
Every soccer mom in America will have hot flashes and palpitations if guns are permitted in schools — even the guns that are used to save their childrens’ lives. The effemination of America proceeds apace.
If I had to wager I’d bet my rep is all for oppressive gun control being an Ivory Tower liberal and a female.
But she is new and there are lots of fickle voters here that will dump an incumbent just because so maybe, just maybe, shell take me and my opinions into consideration.
I put the link to the capwiz website (http://capwiz.com/gunowners/issues/alert/?alertid=62324471) on my Facebook page, and I asked my FB friends to “Share” it with their FB friends. Hopefully, we can start spreading the word about this one, and get a huge amount of emails sent to Washington.
