XM193, c Nick LeghornAt the beginning of December, my ammo supply was starting to run low. I usually buy 5.56 ammo in 1,000 round increments and I was down to my last handful of stripper clips. I could actually see the bottom of the ammo can. I figured that I’d wait until after the Christmas and post-Christmas buying spree had died down before I headed off to Cabela’s and grabbed a crate of ammo. Unfortunately, that plan quickly went down the drain . . .

Let me just preface this by saying that yes, I know there’s other ammo out there. Walmart usually has some ammo in stock and there are other sites that are offering various other flavors of 5.56. But through my own personal testing, I have found that M193 ammunition provides the best compromise between cost and consistency. Plus, I’ve used it in competitions for so long that I intuitively know how the round performs at distance. So you could say that I’ve become rather picky about my ammunition choice.

Throughout January, there was none of my favorite ammo to be had. Niente. Anywhere. At all. Not a single solitary round of 5.56 ammo to be found. Every time I went to the local gun stores, the “ammo zombies” were out in force, combing the shelves and trying to search out that last box that no one had been keen enough to spot all week. And they were coming away empty handed, too.

Until recently, this had merely been a minor inconvenience. I’ve got enough ready-made 300 AAC Blackout ammo on hand (and more than enough powder, primers and bullets) that I could switch to my hunting rifle for 3-gun competitions while the ammo shortage continued.

Unfortunately, recent events have pushed the need to re-stock some 5.56 ammunition from “when I get around to it” to “emergency” levels. And while I’m sure I could eventually pester some PR reps into sending me some ammo to use, I’m not ready to gamble the success of a rather large project on the generosity of a company that’s making money hand over fist in civilian sales at the moment.

So I was browsing Reddit last night when I stumbled across a link to Freedom Munitions. They had 5.56 ammo in stock and at a somewhat reasonable price – 500 rounds for $300. In other words nearly double what the exact same ammo was selling for before it became scarce. But even at that price it was still less than other sites were advertising (like $990/1,000 rounds). I figured “what the hell” and pulled the trigger on a case. I needed the ammo and while prices were slightly better other places, none of them had ammo in stock.

I happened to stumble across the link five minutes after it was posted. I ordered the ammo five minutes later. Five minutes after that, they were sold out again. I ordered at 9:00 PM CST, and by 11:00 CST I had a tracking number for my order.

There has to be an end to this ammo shortage at some point. The last time it was this bad it took nearly a year to get everything settled and back to “normal,” but I’m hoping that the severity of this shortage means that people will run out of money rather soon and things will start to stabilize. Because I really don’t look forward to having a 15 minute window to order ammo before it’s out of stock again. Or, I suppose I could follow Jerry and get a cement mixer.

  1. Welcome to Obama Land! The land of Socalistic Reform, created by a FIP from Chicago, a place that has no guns, and a high rate of gun volence.

  2. I just paid $0.65 for 62gr green tips and thought I was getting a good deal (it was local atleast so I didn’t have to pay for shipping.)

Feels sorta like seeing $3/gallon gas and thinking that’s cheap

      • Speaking of gas… we release oil from the countries oil reserve when the price spikes…why not release ammo from the fed reserve to level out the prices! Do it for the children.

    • $.65 is not cheap… I just saw 450 rounds of 5.56mm ammo for $109.99 the other day! Use places like http://www.ammospy.net because it lets you cancel out steel cases & remanufactured ammo! C’mon, 900 rounds of ammo (on STRIPPER CLIPS) f or $220 is absolutely unreal… Like, nearly $.25 a round is UNBELIEVABLE!

  3. Ammo zombies? I’m sorry the commoners were stepping on your elitist toes and buying up your rightful supply of ammo…

  4. There has to be an end to this ammo shortage at some point. The last time it was this bad it took nearly a year to get everything settled and back to “normal,” ….

Haha, there’s an end alright. For an idea of what it entails, google “Zimbabwe Hyperinflation”. While I don’t think matters here will go quite THAT badly, this time next year inflation combined with market forces will all but guarantee that 60 cents a round is the new fire sale price.

  5. I switched my practice rifle to 5.45×39. I did this for cost reasons before the shortage. Back then, I paid about $135 for a 1100 round case. Recently, the price has gone up to about $169 a case from suppliers, if you can find it. In the last two months I purchased 15 cases. Hoarders have been selling it for twice that amount.

The stuff is Russian surplus with corrosive primers and it is pretty dirty. That just means that I have to clean the gun right after shooting. Not as accurate as modern ammo, but at the close distances that I use it for (under 100-yards) its good enough.

I purchased a piston upper for it. The piston gas system keeps the vast majority of dirt out of the receivers, and so far, I have not had any issues. The cost savings on the ammo will pay for the upper in 1-2 cases depending on what price 5.56 is going for.

I wish I could afford to shoot 8,250 rounds per month!

    • Which 5.45 upper did you get? I have two ARs to build, and the availability of 5.45 ammo spam cans at great prices makes this a seriously interesting option for at least one of them.

      • I bought the Mega Arms which is melonite coated. Another option is the Huldra. I want a second upper but cant fine either now

  6. I just ordered 7.5X55, by the time freight was added it was about $0.65 per round, but I was glad to get it. Only problem is they are so far behind that it won’t ship before 3 or 4 weeks.

    • That’s not saying much around here…. My walmart has NOTHING… Well, nothing in the way of common calibers. No .40, .45, 9-mm, .22LR, .38-SPL, .380. Zilcho. And, they haven’t had any… well… since Sandy Hook.

      • No ammo at walmart here either….oh wait walmarts here have never sold ammo. Well then i guess life’s just always crappy in this state.

    • Here in Wyoming, you can’t even find percussion caps at some LGS.

Apparently, people think that Joe “Hair Plugs” Biden will also recommend coming after Sharps, Ballards and 1885 High Walls as well.

Given some of the pronouncements coming out of Democrats across the country recently, I can’t denounce behavior such as stockpiling percussion caps as irrational.

      • I would be very surprised if there had been a run on percussion caps. What probably happened is that every outfit that can make high-demand ammo switched every production line they had over to those products, and now the inventory is depleted because replacements aren’t being made.

  7. I’ve been buying Federal Independence imported 5.56 ammo at Dicks 20 rounds for $9.00. They seem to get somewhat regular weekly shipments and are sold out in a couple of days.

The shortage and accompanying crazy prices are exactly why I recently built an AR with a .22lr upper. Plus my son and the nephews will enjoy it at the range as well.

  8. I’ve had good experiences with Freedom Munitions’ ammo. It’s not Black Hills, but it’s good and (relatively) cheap.

  9. My target practice is severely curtailed, for the foreseeable future. Who knows, maybe I’ll find some other recreational activity to perform. I have plenty of ammunition for home defense and refresher training every year or three.

I’m not going to succumb to this price gouging nonsense. In the meantime, I think I’ll send off a letter to my congressman and the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, stating my displeasure regarding gun control…

  10. Not sure Id call a 22L and AR. Might look like one.
Anyways…In NY Walmart isnt even selling ammo anymore.
and..12.00 bucks for 20 rounds, or .60 a round is a horrible price to pay for crap ammo.
I wouldnt even buy it unless it was a life or death situation.
You are just feeding into the rape prices distributers are charging,
this in turn makes it OK for them to continue the ” rape”.. Lets stop buying for a few days even, then see what happens to the price.

  11. Good luck with the order. I ordered 1000 rds of 9mm from Freedom Munitions on January 12th. The website showed it to be in stock and I got a confirmation email.

That was about it. Now everytime I login to their website, it shows my order status to be “processing”. No telling if I’ll ever see my order.

I’ve had good luck picking up ammo at the local LGSs, Walmart, and Academy. Even with the shortages and blowing through 300 rds/week at the range, I’ve been able to maintain approximately 3000 rds in each caliber (9mm, .45 ACP, and 5.56).

Tell Tyler to run over to McBrides in Austin for you. They’ve got stacks of 20 rd boxes of 5.56 55gr for $9.95. Not cheap ($0.54/rd after tax), but cheaper than $0.60/rd.

      • Care to start a lottery ticket pool? I’ll buy in!

First the FNH USA 3-gun team thing, now you’re actually able to get your hands on 5.56 ammo. Somebody’s leading a charmed life…

      • Keep an eye on the tracking Nick. During the original O’panic my FedX carrier primers shipment got “lost”. Made it all the way to the Denver hub, less than 30mi from my porch, before it mysteriously wandered off.

  12. > There has to be an end to this ammo shortage at some point.

Sometimes that light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.

  13. I’m in the same boat. I usually replenish the stash this time of year in preparation for our local USPSA and ICORE seasons but I’m trapped. Even if I could find loaded ammo in bulk I won’t / can’t pay the post-apocalyptic pricing (~$400 for 1000 38 Specials? Really?). I could try my friends who reload, but then comes the issue of replacing the components so they’re not left high and dry. I’d start reloading except for the component shortage. So I’m left with the choice of shooting up what little I have left and then being completely out, or having a very quiet summer.

I guess i’ll be putting a lot more miles on the bike this summer. I hope gas prices don’t spike again…

    • I can’t find 38 special for lower then 40c a round either, when I can find it (have 500rnds left). I pay that or less for 357Mag and 357sig and I can easily find both of those at normal prices. So it looks like I’ll be shooting a lot of 22, 357mag and 357sig.

  14. I got an email regarding a Seekins upper receiver (w/FA and Side Flap) – I whipped the card out and *bam* paid. I coudlnt rememember my pasword so I quickly entered an alternate email address and said to hell with it. I have a 5 min window.

I have a friend who’s trying to sell a bunch of Remanufactured ammo him and I picked up at a parking-lot “sale” (If you can call it one – considering prices are now double what they should be). We met up outside the lot at 5:45am – doors didn’t open until 9, and by 8am, the line was around the corner and down the adjacent street by a couple blocks. Cars where driving up, slowing down, and saying “to hell with it” and driving off.

  15. There has to be an end to this ammo shortage at some point.

Well, we can assume that 2016 is the first possible real end…. assuming people decide that they’d rather have a different situation than we have now. Given the sort of pablum coming out of people’s mouths these days, that’s no longer a safe assumption.

You don’t need to go as whole hog as a cement mixer if you have more time to devote to reloading throughout the year than Jerry does. You can always look into commercial tumblers, which come in both vibratory and rotary versions. There are ceramic and stainless steel pin polishing media that do a good job and don’t get saturated with gunk the way corn cob or walnut shell media does.

  16. I’ve seen it go for about .60 a round in 1000 round lots. Best I’ve been by the box local is ’75 a round. Still, saw a brick of 500 .22LR at my FLGS for $60. I passed.

  17. When you already 10,000 rounds of ammo…. you can give it a break and let the other guys buy some.

If it’s “end of the world ammo” why did you wait until there wasn’t any to stock up?

I’ve heard stories… This guy showed up at a parkinglot sale and bough the two pallets a total of 16cans high on all sides. Guy asked him, “what in the hell do you need all that for?” guy says “I dunno, prolly gonna sit on it”

    • I’m not going to say what I think of anyone who is buying far more than they can ever need hoping to get rich off of it somewhere down the road. Sadly, I expect that is often the case. The time may come when friends are more important than an excess of ammo.

    • I have thought about that. My concern is if there will be shortages of the raw materials … brass and the chemicals for powder.

  18. I skipped the local gun show this weekend. I knew it was going to be more hassle than it was worth. And I refuse to pay $25/box for 115gr FMJ 9mm. I guess I’ll prep my CZ for long term storage. I wont be needing it for a long time…

  19. $0.65 per round ? Sounds reasonable in this market. I have been paying $1.00 per round for quality surplus 7.62×51 (Port./Hirt.) in 200 rd. rubber battle packs for some time.

    Of course, I have stashed away 10,000 + rds…..

  20. I have been buying from FreedomMunitions for a couple of years and always found them to be reasonable, reliable, and with excellent quality and service (I have NO connections with them). Almost all of what they sell is high quality reloads, not factory new ammo.

Last weekend they posted on their Facebook page a “Krazy Deal” on 500 round cartons of your ammo (limit one 500 round carton per person) for the 200 cartons that they had in stock, for $199. While much higher than my last orders from them prior to the current craziness, I tried to buy a carton, but they had apparently sold out within minutes of its Facebook posting.

FreedomMunitions is so overwhelmed with orders that the periodically “turn off” their online ordering system, such that EVERYTHING says “out of stock”.

Late last year they opened a location in NW Houston, but I never made it by there. I can only surmise that their Houston location may be bare as well, but still may be worthy of a visit just in case…

  21. BROTHERS AND SISTERS ONE WORD…RELOAD…(THAT IS BEFORE ALL THE BULLETS AND PRIMERS WERE WIPED OUT)

    • +1 from me mate! In my part of the world, 60 cents per round would be considered cheap for in-the-box .223. I’m completely dependent on handloads for my competition rifle. I’m using supplies I stockpiled since before 2000 (in the case of projectiles), buy primers by the thousand, and powder in 4kg canisters. I can make a budget load using 2c 62g SS109 projectiles I batched into 1 grain increments. The 62g pills varied from 58-65 grains so that is why I batched them. If I want long range accuracy, 69g Sierra Match Kings do the job. I found a box of a thousand of them when I moved house I had forgotten about. Between the 62 and 69g projectiles, I’ll be shooting for several more years. When the Match Kings run out, I’ll switch to 68g Hornady bullets because they are 2/3rds the cost of the Sierra MKs.

A good thing about a 1-in-9″ pitch barrel is I can use bullets as low as 50g and as heavy as 70g. If things get really dire, I can pick up cheap bulk projectiles of almost any weight, but my current supplies are likely to last for quite a few more years.

  22. I’d love to see some investigative reporting on the ammo situation. If no suppliers have (hardly) any ammo, where’s it going? Was there such a large backlog of orders? Are the feds hooving up the ammo supply?

And what’s the volume capacity of the ammo distribution channel in the US – both manufacturers and imports? How many rounds are we talking about going into people’s 10,000 round caches?

What might break the log jam, and when? Are manufacturers actively increasing supply? Is demand going up, down or holding steady?

    • The feds aren’t buying it up, we are… I have only shot once since december, but I still buy when I find it. I talked with guys at lgs and the guy at walmart that stocks the ammo, they were having trouble getting orders filled since the election and are only getting some of the orders filled that they made in October of 2012, It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out if stuff was sold out before the rush that the rush is only going to make things more scarce.

      • Yeah we just mixed a crappy election, a Christmas shopping spree, and a gun control panic into one monster mess. Not really surprised ammo’s gone like everywhere.

      • Wanna recheck that answer? its been proven that they are buying up anything and everything they can.(yes I know that I’m replying to you after three months have passed but that should just cement the notion that maybe not all conspiracy theories are just theories, sometimes they are dead on.)

        • If it’s been proven, then please produce the evidence.

Where’s it all stored & what do you think they’re going to do with all the, to them, unusable stuff?

  23. “There has to be an end to this ammo shortage at some point.”
not as long as these guys who have 10K rounds are still adding to their stockpile.

the gun stores and ranges made a lot of money , but they are ghost town empty arround here now. that is going to hurt in the long run.

looks like obama is succeeding in getting people to give up shooting. they are all priced out iof it, and scared to draw the stash down from 10000 to 9500 rounds.

  24. @ Nick

That why you buy a Dillion 550, or 650 and reload because your get hammered when buying over priced surplus ammo and your getting ripped off.

Buy .223 brass and 55gr FMJ bullets and reload!

      • I had some recent luck at Powder Valley…maybe…order was “in stock” but is still “processing”. Of course the 8lb jug I paid for was not my usual choice, or even one that I’ve used in the past. Beggers != Choosers…

        • My order from January 5th at Powder Valley just shipped out yesterday. So they might be operating as much as a month behind schedule. The primers and bullets I ordered were listed as “in stock” as well.

    • where can you get bullets or for that matter primers …all the normal websites i deal with are out (personaly I don’t have to worry about that)

      • Primers your out of luck. You can get powder from your local Bi mart or sporting goods store be there early in the morning when a new shipment comes.

  25. Walmart has introduced a new Tulammo Brass Maxx product this week. Walked into the store this morning and they had several boxes of 50 count .223 @$16.97. Grabbed them and looked it up on the computer when I got home. Apparently they have rolled out the product across the country with all their stores at least getting a few boxes and also have it in .40cal. Brass, reloadable and cheap and from what the Internet says-and we all know there can be no lies on the internet-it is loaded for Tulammo in Italy by Fiocci. I have not shot it, have not seen any reviews but at $0.34 apiece, if it goes bang, it may be my new love.

    • Not gonna lie, that’s actually a really good idea. Great, silent, effective hunting tool, and I doubt you’re going to see an ammo shortage.

    • I’ve considered a crossbow. However, retrieving the bolts from the bullet trap at our indoor shooting range could prove problematic.

  26. Another relevant post focused on gun ownership and not politics. Keep it up Nick, you’re the heart and soul of this website.

sidenote I bought the exact same ammo off of dealer I know for $0.50 a round and it still seemed high to me. sad times, patience required.

  27. My backordered 1000 rounds of Herter’s 62gr 223 from Cabelas finally arrived today. Looks like they are working their way through the backlog, I placed the order back in December. $300. Pretty happy with it, wished I had bought a couple more crates while they were still taking backorders.

  28. We’ve heard indirectly from someone who attended the SHOT Show in Vegas recently that demand has far exceeded supply and the manufacturers are humping to get caught up. Hopefully the shortage won’t last too long.

  29. The local Dicks (I know they told us to FOAD, but I want some damn ammo) has been getting about 100 boxes of PMC every Friday. Had to be there at 9:45am to get a few boxes. Funny, the man behind the counter had cardboard boxes ready for all the bulk purchases. $8.00 a box isn’t too bad. May not be Federal Ammunition 5.56 but its better then any Hornady iv used, (No offence to Hornady fans). Cant be too picky now adays.

  30. I hear ya. All you guys that have run dry, I’m sure it really sucks. My personal philosophy has always been “my guns are useless without a ready supply of ammo”. Most of us knew this kind of thing was coming. Far too many did not heed their own advice. Getting angry about the situation is understandable I suppose, but don’t expect me to feel bad about my cache. It’s right where I planned for it to be, and won’t be touched, used, or sold at any price. If there is a “next time”, execute your plan with the wisdom you have learned. Ten thousand rounds of your main ammunition, five thousand of each of the major pistol calibers, and as much 22LR as you have space for. I would recommend 5000 rounds of 12 gauge in various loads as well. Consider it currency for the coming reality.

    • While my stockpile isn’t as robust as your recommendations, I agree with the sentiment. I’ve got a nice stash, and I’m basically sitting on it. I’ve got 6,000 rounds of .22LR to hold me over for range fun. But, I’m sitting on the other calibers until this shitstorm settles down.

    • My old plan was having 2-3k rounds for pistols and 5k+ for 22LR. Friends and family were calling me crazy even then. But now that the SHTF, I’ve had to double those numbers…pretty much in line with your thinking. So you know it’s bad out there when even the most prepared among us get caught off guard. I hate being labeled as a hoarder or greedy since I actually shoot my cache, not just sitting on it and admiring.

  31. So Nick, the big question is, what will your future minimum ammo level be for 5.56, no matter how solid the ammo supply looks?

      • P.S. Walmart had 3 inch turkey shells, $5 a box last summer $ 0.50 cheaper than clay loads, I bought every box I could 2-3 at a time on paydays, I have 140 turkey loads for my shotgun to plink with, without getting into my PD loads or buck shot stash,5.56mm/223 I always keep a thousand, and unfortunately I bought a 9mm taurus last year for plinking and I should have just bought 450 bucks worth of 40 S&W because I bought it to save money on shooting the 40, ha ammo is just as much for both calibers now.

      • I think 1,000 rounds was roughly his “old” minimum. I think his new minimum is going to be more like 5,000 rounds, since he shoots so much.

I currently have about 1,500 rounds with a 1,000 round minimum, but that’s what fits me.

  32. It’s not just ammo and components in short supply, but also dies, case gages and reloading presses. Dillon has posted a 6 to 8 week delay on reloading machine orders.

I think it is a good sign that some people are able to find .223 / 5.56 for well under 80 cents a round. To me that says the upward price pressure has lessened.

  33. Gander Mountain’s running a “sale” now. They’ve been holding ammo in the back and putting a shelf out per day. I went to pick up a rifle from their gunsmith at lunchtime and was shocked to see American Eagle 5.56 for $45/100 (100-round limit) and Federal .22LR for $14/375 (500-round limit). I cajoled them into letting me buy 2 boxes of .22 along with the 100-round box of 5.56 and called my shooting buddy. He went there after work and the shelves were bare.

    • Have fun with it, as I reported last week, my local walmart is out of everything except deer rifle rounds, 17hmr, and .38 specials

  34. I’ve gone from WalMart to Walmart here in the Sarasota area looking for 380 and 38 special ammo, no dice. The cupboards are bare of anything but some 22 mag and shotgun shells, a little bit of 3-30 and 30-06. I looked online for some Federal Hydra-Shok in 380, I forget which dealer it was but the shipping date was September, 2013! Good thing I stocked up when I saw where things were headed.

  35. I was very happy to find and buy the last three 50 rd boxes of .223 Tulammo with brass casing for .32 a round today at Walmart in Eastern Kentucky.
Kudos to Walmart’s 3 box per day limit.

  36. One website we no longer speak of is selling M193 for $1.70 a round plus shipping! I guess that’s why we no longer speak of them.

  37. Geeee, and people wonder why the price is what it is….

Pssssst……. Because they know that some dumb ass will pay it.

    HINT!

      • Malarky. If they can be made you can build an “end to end” manufacturing plant. I can’t believe that one of us can’t make that happen. My Grandpa would do it with his bear hands.

You have a built in customer base plus you can compete with the present manufactures of it for the GSA business.

  38. So 1,000 rounds is $600 & freight – say $650.

    1,000 primers $30
    1,000 fmj bullets $90
    Powder for 1,000 rounds @ 23gr $6.60
    Brass saved from everywhere $free

That looks like $126.60 to me, saving enough for a Dillon or Hornady progressive press & a set of dies on the first 1,000 & after that it’s $470 in your pocket for every subsequent 1,000, plus you get to develop a load that’s better than any surplus or factory one.

Heck; I load 5.56 pretty quickly on an RCBS Junior.

OK, so I actually like reloading too…:-)

  39. Well the Ammo Zombie remark kind of got me too but hey I understand a fellow shooters frustration finding ammo as well. The one that killed me was Brass Locust… It is soo bad at our local state ran range that you have to go with a friend or ur neighbor will sweep ur booth clean while ur downrange. The range is trying to stop it but theres always that sneaky f**k at the end of the line that u can’t see that still tries but its taking care of itself pretty much. Ppl are watching out for one another and dressing them down if caught. I’ve twice almost bought one of those catch bags but I haven’t yet cos I hate the way they look…=) Vain I know…=/

  40. I hate to even consider conspiracy theories…but this is getting silly. I’ve talked to a number of the local gun shops, walmart and gander mountain. I check a few times a week for .223, 5.56…and there hasn’t been a scrap on the shelf since recent events. I asked the various employees if they had had any…at all since then. This is the interesting thing: Each one from a different store had the same story, that yes they’d been getting shipments in but there were “a couple of guys” that seemed to know when the shipments were due in and would be there waiting…and buy out whatever came in. I asked how many times this has happened…and they responded “a lot of times” Several different stores, and the same story. I’ve read similar things on the various forums too. Why places aren’t setting a limit on purchase amounts…I dunno. Seems to resonate with the report of Homeland Security purchasing an epic amount of .223/5.56 ammo and PDW around the same time. Administration trying to do gun control by simply making the stuff unavailable? Who knows. I really wouldn’t put anything past them at this point.

Things are getting really weird. Far weirder than the Clinton gun panic and even the first Obama election panic. Weird Weird.

I’ve also been checking something like 10 ammo sites daily…and I’ve not seen a single “in stock” either.

There have also been stories of dudes mobbing and dogpiling to get at shipments at gander mountain…like a bunch of women stampeding a doorbuster sale…completely off the current subject ofcourse, but still crazy.

    • Almost all the stores have daily limits now. I used to be one of those people waiting in front of the store before they open. Sometimes I got lucky but most of the time I wasn’t.
