Meet (former) Contra Costa County Deputy Kyle Rowland. In his spare time, he works as a blues crooner and harmonica player. Last Friday night though, police allege that he got himself kicked out of a party and returned with a pair of guns.
He promptly popped off a couple of caps and some of the more sober partygoers “subdued” him. Kyle resisted. It only went downhill from there for our blonde bozo. The alpha males present emptied an entire #10 can of whoopass on him. Hence Irresponsible (former) Gun Owner of the Day Kyle Rowland’s mug shot taken shortly thereafter.
As you’d expect, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office had no sense of humor about the incident. Word of Kyle’s arrest reached them, and they promptly fired him before his eye quit bleeding. Even worse for our would-be future deputy, Sacramento’s finest charged the now-former lawman with attempted murder. Which leaves us to wonder if penitentiaries in California can order harmonicas for the inmates. Or perhaps, Kyle will take up playing other instruments in his immediate future.
Let’s face it: Some people probably shouldn’t have guns and Kyle’s one of them.
From the San Fran Chronicle:
An off-duty Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy and blues musician was arrested and later fired after shooting a handgun outside a party in Sacramento, authorities said Monday.
Kyle Rowland, 23, a rookie deputy who lives in Sacramento and recently started commuting to his new job in the Bay Area, was attending a small gathering late Thursday at a home in his downtown neighborhood. He left the party briefly, possibly after a dispute, only to return after midnight with two firearms, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
His return to the party created a “disturbance” and a confrontation ensued between Rowland and others at the house, police said. During the ruckus, Rowland fired a handgun “multiple times,” police said.
“Thankfully no one was struck by the gunfire,” said Officer Matthew McPhail. “One of the people at the party immediately intervened and attempted to physically restrain him, which is a pretty courageous thing to do if you’re not armed.”
“A pretty courageous thing to do if you’re not armed,” Officer McPhail observed correctly.
Thank goodness America raises courageous young men willing and able to rise to the occasion to deal with irresponsible idiots.
He should count himself lucky. At most parties I’ve gone to, he would not still be breathing. Then again, a clown like this wouldn’t get invited in the first place.
I agree. Unless the circumstances were such that I was not in fear of death or great bodily injury, I would have shot him dead. But if a dude is “shooting up the place,” he is more than likely showing signs that he is willing to kill someone. I don’t think a jury would second guess anyone’s decision to take him out, esp. in light of all of the mass shooting incidents in recent years.
The Coroner’s report would have been interesting. Probably something along the lines of:
“The decedent was found with two handguns rectally inserted…”
How else would one secure his arms for him in this instance?
He had 2 guns. Once I pried one loose, he would still be a danger to all around him due to the other, requiring me to empty it into him.
Respect mah authora… wait… I just lost it!
He doesn’t look that bad Tbh, others look a lot worse after an encounter with cops, party goers went easy on him.
Ha… ha, ha… “only cops should have guns”… He he he.
every time i hear “only the police and military are properly trained enough…..” and ect argument.
I guess we know who had the bigger guns.
Dipshite…
Alcohol and idiot equals Big idiot
Seriously wonder what sort of psychological testing, if any at all, they do for that department.
Like most departments, they test for overly aggressive betas with authority issues and ADHD who don’t score too high on the IQ section.
And hire them.
And then promote them…
Having worked 30 years in federal prisons, I can assure you that a man who looks like Kyle and was in law enforcement will definitely be playing another type of mouth organ or doing his time in the special housing unit.
Skin flute?
Bone piccolo?
Asscordian?
I’m thinking the Ghetto Trumpet Blaster or the Salty Siesta Saxaphone without the “safety sombrero” mute. Could also be playing the Kung Fu Kazoo, but those are not common in prisons and if they are present are usually prized by the other inmates.
Heh heh, weiners, heh heh heh.
Only worked 1 year in a prison and had the same thought! He’s sure bound to be popular.
He couple also pull a Manning… or de-manning as the case may be.
I’d always wondered if his ‘transformation’ wasn’t in reality a way to discredit him. Think about it, he betrayed the big G, then made himself into a taboo pariah after months of solitary confinement alternated with extensive questioning. Any thoughts that he may have been motivated by legitimate concerns are now colored by recognition of his mental illness playing a substantial role.
Now, we subsequently learned he was messed up at least shortly before his arrest (although it’s not like a little detail like that timing could not be easily fabricated), and that in conjunction with Obama’s commutation seems to suggest an official recognition that this was motivated by mental illness and will not be repeated.
But look at the affair with more jaded or conspiratorial glasses, and it seems remarkably similar to the end of Winston in 1984; destroyed mentally & spiritually through confinement, torture, and interrogation, he is released by the government as a pitiful shell of a man to kill himself in obscurity, no longer a threat to their aims or a potential symbol of resistance. Manning ‘just happening’ to be a highly-suicidal (btw, there’s no way in hell someone with his history of self-harm should be allowed to go free; we are witnessing a bloodless execution) transgender after months of solitary confinement and every type of interrogation or brainwashing method the military could get away with seemed very convenient. If he lives long enough, perhaps a tell-all book will relieve these doubts, though I’d imagine he is still under a lot of non-disclosure agreements about his incarceration and will never be allowed to leave the country.
You’re assuming I have a problem with him being stood up against a wall and shot.
God bless our rape-based criminal punishment system. Oh well, at least *prison* rape is still allowed to be funny;
“We came in here and all the convicts you know, all of them where like, “Uh… ” you know, “He was f***ed to death before we got here.” So we couldn’t really point the finger at nobody, because it was either all or nothing, and you ain’t going to book two dozen people.” –Reno 911 (basically the only sentence from the quote that can be posted here)
Spot on John . I worked 20 years at the Iowa State Penitentiary, and this guy is headed for PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. And that may not be cake walk.
he will get a “paid vacation” and be working on some other police force. The “THIN BLUE LINE” TAKES CARE OF ITS OWN…
Did you even read the story? He has already been fired.
Members of a given agency tend to protect each other and discourage the local D.A. from prosecuting. They have much less control over other jurisdictions. He has already been booked (see photo above), and charged with attempted murder.
Once he has a felony conviction, he won’t be hired by any law enforcement agency. Anywhere. Ever.
What a punk. He’s not worthy to carry Lon Horiuchi’s rifle case.
You are correct. However, his “brethren in blue” will be able to sway the jury and, at the least, get a “hung” jury which will preclude further prosecution. It happens all the time.
You see, police have the freedom to “talk” to prospective jurors and get them to vote for acquittal. Jury tampering?? Yes, but it happens all the time, and those of the “thin blue line” tend to get away with it…
Odds are, this guy won’t do any “hard time”.
On the outside chance that he is convicted and sentenced to prison time, there are special “rules” for cops. He will be given an assumed name and put into the federal system…
Regards,
Dude should have claimed that the party goers were insulting President Obama and he would be fully pardoned by tonight.
I don’t think that would have done it.
Now, if he’d claimed they were all Trump supporters who leaked Democrat emails…
Generally speaking when someone is an asshole drunk I find them to be an asshole sober. Same goes for dumbasses.
Probably good he’s no longer working in LE.
“Generally speaking when someone is an asshole drunk I find them to be an asshole sober”
I have found that to be 100 % correct.
Alcohol strips inhibition away, revealing one’s core personality…
Alcohol, like the internet, brings out the real person. And that’s quite disturbing in some cases.
Looks like someone leads exclusively with the left..
Jaw area looks oddly unfased; I kind of wonder if this was a one-hit conclusion (TKO by fractured orbital). From the sounds of it, his reaction time was likely in the multiple seconds.
Or he caught a knee. I did that yesterday. Decided that a bad idea was in fact a good idea and ate a knee to the right eye for it.
Today everyone thought I must have gotten in a bar fight.
“A pretty courageous thing to do if you’re not armed,” Officer McPhail observed correctly.
Either it’s a pretty courageous thing to do even if you are armed, or Officer McPhail’s brothers in uniform are not courageous.
Good on the PD for firing him! With shit like this, the usual MO is to cover it up and/or ignore it. Glad to see that there are still a handful of good cops out there who give assholes like this the boot.
Looks just like that blonde kid who got thrashed by Edward Norton in Fight Club, lol
Man, that had to be a hell of a hangover.
Two guns you say… I hope he was dual welding.
That would’ve made his ass kicking even more warranted.
“Kick his ass, Seabass!”
Glad he got fired.
Total surprise, I would believe that the Gestapo would blame the party people and that it was their fault for hitting the cop and the use of a weapon was OK.
This pawn shop owner is way more irresponsible. Not only does he gun down an innocent youth who was just holding two guns he wanted to pawn, but he shoots his own display case.

As LEOS we should take out the trash. This one was at the top of the garbage heap
He’s gonna be hearing a lot of banjo music in the big house as a former cop.
I was at the party and no one on this thread or the author of this has any of the facts. The party goers found out he was a cop and 5 of them pushed him down a flight of stairs and jumped on him while punching him on the face. Kyle pulled his service weapon and fired 4 shots away from the crowd beating him. He did not aim at anyone and only fired to stop the beating. He was ultimately charged with negligent discharge of a firearm. No jail time. You idiots should really do your research before commenting on something you know nothing about. He is an outstanding person in our community and has traveled around the word promoting his music. He is also a worship leader at his Church and has traveled extensively on mission trips. Don’t talk about people you know nothing about. Shame on the moron author of this article.
