Los Angeles residents are living through a nightmare scenario. The local district attorney announced he’s releasing a 24-year-old convicted murderer after serving only six years of a 50-year sentence. Police are, at the same time, telling everyone, including would-be criminals, that they’re unable to quickly respond to calls for help and that crime victims should just “cooperate and comply” with the perpetrators.

That’s on top of the fact that California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, all obstacles to law-abiding citizens wanting to buy a firearm for protection.

The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted a warning that they’re in the midst of a surging crime wave, including increased so-called “follow-home” burglaries. That’s where a criminal watches their victim leave a store, follows them home then robs them.

The paltry warning is frustrating for sure, but after caving to “defund the police” activists last year, the L.A. City Council voted 12-2 to cut $150 million from this year’s police budget. That’s left law enforcement reduced and resulting to public safety by press release.


“Due to an increase in violent street robberies, Robbery-Homicide Division has become aware of an ongoing crime trend of follow-home robberies,” an LAPD press release read. “If you are being robbed, do not resist the robbery suspects; cooperate and comply with their demands. Be a good witness.”

The release includes six more suggestions from LAPD for potential victims. All suggest the victims play nice with perpetrators or to change their behaviors while saying nothing about holding criminals to account.

Revolving Door ‘Justice’

The LAPD’s “cooperate and comply” release came on the heels of a separate recent announcement from Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon that has citizens fuming mad. Gascon used a “legal technicality” that will lead to the release of Andrew Cachu, a convicted murderer and documented gang member who was previously sentenced to 50 years in prison.

This wasn’t a first-time surprise either. Immediately after Gascon took office as the new L.A. district attorney, he announced sweeping sentencing reforms that reduced the criminals’ sentences and infuriated the families of the victims of those violent crimes. Gascon’s campaign, it is worth noting, was funded by antigun billionaire George Soros.

“He’s running a social experiment that is dangerous for all of us because his whole goal is to release all these criminals out there in the street, and somehow they’re magically going to behave,” said Samuel Dordulian, an attorney representing several victims’ families.

The combination of lax sentencing reforms by DA Gascon that have led to violent criminals being released early and the LAPD telling crime victims to take it has Californians rightly worried about their safety and how to better protect themselves, since California seems to prefer decriminalizing crime and making it a crime to defend oneself.

Criminalizing Civil Rights

California is among the strictest states when it comes to gun control. The state has imposed universal background checks on potential gun buyers since the 1990s, as well as bans on modern sporting rifles (MSRs), the most popular selling semiautomatic rifle in America. They have a 10-day waiting period and limits on the number of firearms a law-abiding Californian can purchase per month regardless of passing the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check.

The state also has gun registration requirements, so-called “red flag” laws and bans on standard capacity magazines. California even has background checks on ammunition purchases.

On top of all those restrictions on their constitutional rights, California is one of only a handful of “may issue” states where government bureaucrats get to decide whether an applicant has “good cause” to obtain a concealed carry permit, a system that is ripe for corruption.

Not every Californian is letting gun control politicians sway them from exercising Second Amendment rights. In 2019, 1.2 million Californians passed a NICS check to purchase a firearm. In 2020, that number jumped to 1.6 million, a sizeable percentage increase that matched the national trend of historic firearm sales. Already in 2021 more than 1.2 million Californians have passed a NICS check to buy a gun with two months to go before the end of the year.

Nikki Duncan, an African-American woman, described why the crime climate in California prompted her to purchase a firearm.

“We all want to be safe and if this is the way that you’re able to ensure your safety, you should definitely do it,” Duncan said, encouraging her friends to consider purchasing a firearm as well.

California can’t have it both ways. The easy-on-crime, tough-on-rights message is no longer in the shadows. It’s literally being spread on social media by law enforcement.

        • Likely both. He is not very popular with the LAPD or LASD, I can tell you that. The Sheriff promised to increase the number of CCWs issued, but from what I have read, the list to get the required interview from a sheriff’s deputy is months long.

    • Fortunately for me, I live in the edge of Los Angeles County, and not in the City proper, so LAPD does not patrol here. My community is under the jurisdiction of LASD and Sheriff Villanueva.

      Just…waiting…for…them…to…get…to…my…CCW…application…in…the…stack…on…their…desk……..

        A good-looking woman being raped should “just lay there and enjoy it”, since she enjoys visual-attractive ‘privilege’ her homelier sisters do not. Her unsavory attacker is simply getting some carnal ‘justice’ being denied to him, and it’s his right to demand it.

      • I am unarmed by choice, because crime in this state is concentrated in the large urban areas. This town has crime, for sure, but most of it is too minor to make the local paper. Murder is a rarity, and I have never heard of an attempted car jacking (although stealing Hondas is a popular pastime). Most crime, other than burglaries, is drug and/or alcohol related.
        So carrying every day is rather pointless. In thirty years, I have heard of maybe three or four self defense shootings any where within 50 miles, and the majority were in the home (break ins). If things change, I’ll go back to it (this is a “shall issue” county), but for right now it is not a major concern.

        • Do your thing. There have been so many times in my life I’ve been caught without something, I shouldn’t have left home without. Whether a knife, phone, wallet, etc. because I didn’t think I’d need it. Those were warnings and I’ve heeded them. I don’t think I could handle the guilt if something awful happened to one of my family because I was unarmed, believing that today wouldn’t be the day.

          I wonder how many people who have been assaulted on the street, or died in “mass shooting events” in GFZs would agree with you? No one ever thought “it was going to happen to them” unless they were some sort of idiot intentionally walking into a deadly situation.

          Actually, I believe that a serious dent in violent crime could be made if every person who is qualified or permitted to carry would do so, everywhere, every day. Rather than a bunch if Gomers sitting around showing off their newly-acquired permits to look important to their drinking pals, they should familiarize themselves with a good handgun to carry, practice some close-in marksmanship and bringing their gun to bear, and start packing.

          I know more people with the state’s right to carry that never even consider it than I do people who carry every day. Americans need to be constantly reminded that a right not exercised is a right not necessary.

          Practice. Carry. Practice some more. Plan for the unthinkable and pray you never need to draw your firearm. But be prepared.

          Always.

  3. Ok, here’s how this works.

    Step 1. Draw weapon from holster, bring to bear on bad guy, squeeze trigger.. You complied with the bad guy because its obvious he is asking to get shot by trying to harm you.

    Step 2. When the police show up be a good witness and tell them “I feared for my life, I saw everything. I even have a good description for you, the body is right over here.”

      • Thats it right there. They won’t show up for you so they most likely won’t show up for the bad guy either. Hopefully the department of sanitation will though.

      • eventually they will because you are a law abiding person with a gun that acted in self defense. That they will show up for, but for the criminal not so much.

      • If the police do not show up, then you end up with a rotting corpse on your home or business property which is highly undesirable for obvious reasons–and it will in all likelihood bring the police eventually anyway.

        And the police eventually showing up is undesirable since they will conclude that you, “must have been in the wrong since you failed to call them.” That gets you arrested and charged with homicide.

        Your only other option is to take the body away yourself. That is rife with legal jeopardy. First of all, there is considerable risk that a neighbor will see or their surveillance cameras will record your activity. Of course that is almost guaranteed to leave blood or hair evidence in your transport vehicle. If police discover that, a jury will conclude that you murdered your attacker and tried to take the body away to cover it up. Then there is the fact that, even if you dodge a murder conviction, you are almost guaranteed to go down for evidence tampering for removing the body from the crime scene.

        There is no good outcome.

      • No need for stuffing the ballot box–or machine. Three out of four registered voters are Democrats. It is so bad that the state Republican Party doesn’t even run candidates in some elections, and has been known to not back Republican candidates in elections for US congressional or Senate seats because the Democrats have a lock on those seats.

        • It’s like that in my town, except the opposite. The loneliest place around is the county Democratic Party office. Even as close as a few days before the recent election, the two or three who showed up in the morning, would give up and lock up by 10 AM, and retire to the bar across the street. I almost feel sorry for them, except it’s just too pathetic and funny.

    • California was once a Red state, but after amnesty in the 80’s under Reagan it went blue and will never come back. The Democrat machine has been extremely successful in gaining and maintaining power in Illinois and California, they intend to bring the same brand of voting to the rest of the country. Given the systemic corruption endemic to California and allowing anyone to vote without proving citizenship, there is pretty much zero chance Cali will ever have an honest election.

    That’s a feature, not a bug. They know exactly what released criminals are going to do and it is part of their plan. Anyone in CA who is otherwise law abiding should buy a gun illegally if that is the only way they can get it, and carry it illegally if that is the only way they can carry. If forced into self defense they should leave the scene ASAP, say nothing to anyone, and get rid of the weapon in the nearest large body of water as fast as they can.

      • The LAPD’s next advice will be to have all of your valuables boxed at your front door and to provide a handcart to ensure OHSA compliance. We can’t have criminals hurting their backs carrying away all that loot.

          I shared your sentiment years ago. Then someone shared a possible explanation with me. They suggested that someone did respond to Ruby Ridge and Waco in-kind in Oklahoma City. Note that fedzilla kept an unusually low-profile for at least two decades after Oklahoma City.

          Then fedzilla decided it was time to get heavy handed again at the Bundy ranch in Nevada, was surprised at the significant armed response, and backed down.

          So, I will argue that there very well could be some appreciable push-back for heavy-handed tactics.

  17. According to Kleck’s “Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America” – the leading authority on the subject of compliance and referenced by the DOJ:

    1. Any form of resistance, except with firearm, carries with it an injury rate of 52%.

    2. Resistance with a firearm carried with it the risk of injury of 17%, but use of a firearm early in an encounter carries with it a risk of injury of 6%.

    Overall, in Kleck, you have a minimum of a 25% chance of being injured if you comply, but you are 4 time less likely to be injured if you have your firearm and are prepared to use it.

    Take away here summary: compliance may still result in injury (which includes death), resistance without a firearm carries a 52% chance of injury (which includes death), resistance with a firearm lowers chance of injury (which includes death) to 17%, resistance with a firearm early in the encounter further lowers risk of injury (which includes death) to 6%

    If you are armed are you willing to gamble that you are not in the 25%?
    if you are not armed are you willing to gamble that you are not in the 52%?

    Compliance or not, resistance or not – is not a decision one needs to make. The answer is already provided, non-compliance via firearms resistance offers the best chance of less injury. But if you want, you can roll the dice and take the chance of being a good-n-dead witness.

      That is an excellent summary of a source that I have never heard about.

      I like the fact that it all boils down to:

      If someone attacks you (which includes armed robbery) and you deploy a firearm in self-defense early in the attack, you have a 94% chance of walking away from the attack without injury or death.

      I had heard a while back that it was 92%–I have no idea what the source was. That passes the “smell test” in my book.

    • I live 100 miles north of Sacramento. Except for the heat and the forest fires this past summer, it doesn’t suck. (I like the heat.) It would only suck if every summer becomes like this last one with too many fires. Toxic air is no fun.

  20. I logged in solely to read the comments. I live south of LA. Last year I fired my last client from LA as I hated going thru the city. Every overpass with tent cities, trash everywhere. Makes SF look good.
    This gives me more proof my decisions to not go north are well founded.

  32. The ten day wait to pick up firearms (we call it “jail”) isn’t so bad–it just increases the anticipation! (Shop early, shop often.) The one firearm in 30 days is pretty silly. You can’t buy a matched set of pistols. Not that I can afford to buy more than one in thirty, mind you. It used to be just handguns, but the Legislators in their infinite wisdom (the same kind of wisdom demonstrated by DA Gascon) decided it should be all firearms. If it was intended to reduce gun crime…it isn’t working.

    I hoping the Supreme Court imposes shall issue as the law of the land. The heads exploding everywhere will be very entertaining! (Pop! Pop!)

    Indeed, but we are now long beyond 26yrs….and nothing. Avoiding bloody conflict is now embedded in our DNA.

    Have actually had one or two live conversations with 2A patriots. Asked them both if they watch NFL football games. When they said “yes” I said, “If you cannot avoid watching anti-American zillionaires entertainment, how do you propose generating the energy to go into actual combat?” The first syllables have been, “uh, uh, uh…”

    • I think this mostly comes down to how you operationally define your terms.

      I’d be hesitant to take seriously any term generally bandied about as “intelligent” by a bunch of people who like Hawaiian print kydex holsters.

      My opinions on the rest of it are not optimistic. Quite frankly, if I’m being entirely honest, I doubt this country survives in its current form into 2023. The question is if that gets violent. Either way a lot of people don’t survive it.

      Boog? Maybe. But generally speaking SHTF doesn’t happen all at once. It’s more of a “Slowly at first, then all at once” sort of process.

      In fact, I’d argue you’re already in what amounts to the beginning of SHTF, a proto-fascist state where resistance is brewing and people aren’t just angry they’re seething with rage and really rather tribal. A powderkeg awaiting it’s spark, and it’s sitting in weld shop that just issued a dozen hot-work permits.

      Maybe it’s the Boog. Maybe it’s just the collapse of an Empire. Maybe it’s what Amos referred to as “the churn” in The Expanse.

      The only thing I know for sure is that bad shit comes this way and ain’t no one in this country truly prepared for it.

    Herman Wouk deemed such to be manifestation of “the will not to believe” what is painfully obvious. “The will not to believe” is not a synonym for “disbelief”, or skepticism, or simple doubt. “The will not to believe is a conscious, intentional act of one’s will.   47. The Oklahoma federal building bomb event was not the/a boogie lew. The bombing was an isolated incident 26yrs ago. An incident that instigated no national uprising of “patriots”.

    Waco was a direct federal and military assault on a group of people who permitted firearms to be kept in the same facilities as children. Again, there was no national uprising of “patriots”. Waco happened 28yrs ago.

    Ruby Ridge and the Bundys also did not attract the “patriots” to rise up.

    Given the lack of “patriotic” response to the above government outrages, given the length of time that passed since and between the above outrages, it is difficult to understand how people any longer believe that one day, some day, somehow, some way, “patriots” will take up arms to overthrow any government in this country.

    Why do I point out the folly of believing that one day the public will use firearms to discipline a rogue government? Because talk of such makes us seem unhinged and dangerous to “normal” people. We trash our credibility as thoughtful persons. And year after year, we sing the same song to ourselves, but we are not taken seriously.

    People constantly ignore that today’s “patriots” have no leaders, no revolutionary council, no secret network gearing up to take on the central government. Civil War 1.0 was not fought by a rag tag bunch of individuals who ran amok, uncoordinated, unfocused. We need to stop fantasizing. If we cannot articulate a “bright line” beyond which a significant margin of the populace will rebel against government, then talking about the boogie is just silly.

  49. It’s funny how the anti-gunners use England as an iconic symbol for gun control and this is the exact same message they put out to their subjects many years ago. The only difference is they don’t want you to defend yourself and hurt your attacker. If you do hurt your attacker, you will be punished.

  50. The notice reads as if it was written by and for the benefit of criminals:
    “If you are being robbed, do not resist the robbery suspects; cooperate and comply with their demands.”
    Criminals must be overjoyed at that wording!

    Now imagine how much they could have deterred crime if they replaced the above criminal-coddling advice with the following:
    “If you are being robbed, fight back against the robbers as fiercely as you can with any and all weapons possible! Make the criminal pay for his robbery attempt with his own blood. If you have no weapons, kick him in the nuts.”
    That might make criminals think twice about their choice of profession.
