Traditionally, Hornady has appealed to the high end market. People who take their shooting seriously enough to pay serious money for their cartridges. They’re paying for ammo that’s accurate, dependable, deadly. In that order. Hornady’s pre-Halloween release of Zombie ammo is a major marketing jump sideways—and a hit. Our friends in the industry report brisk sales. And it’s all just a bit of fun, innit mate? That said, this new video takes the Hornady brand in a new direction, adding interpersonal—OK person to zombie—violence to the marketing mix. While the company has never shied away from showing true life hunting hits, point blank head shots to a [somewhat] human from an AR takes it to another level. Judging from the YouTube comments the reaction to Zombie Max cuts both ways . . .

absurd… cant believe the marketing team for hornady would OK such a demeaning product to the gun community… yes, go ahead and latch on to the COD-nazi-zombie-young-would-be
-gun-owners… what a shame. the rest of us will be purchasing REAL ammo, for REAL horrific situations and/or hunting…
pillowdude:
I dont even own a gun but I’m picking up a box after watching this shit.

I’m buying nothing but Hornady ammo from this day on. I will name my next child Hornady also… well maybe my next dog, but whatever.
The comments are pro anti-zombie ammo, on balance. But then people who aren’t into this stuff wouldn’t click on the email blast link in the first place. The question is, would it put them off the Hornady brand? And what will the company do for an encore?
I’m not into the whole zombie shooting thing but the commercial is pretty cool, I like it. Doesn’t affect my opinion of Hornady products either way.
This cannot end well. I just don’t think it will pay for Hornady, or for anyone, to market ammunition in a frivolous way – or in a way that in any ways panders to fantasy. This is not a step in the right direction.
It’s a marketing gimmic, a novelty, and eventually, a limited run collectors item. It’s original, it’s fresh, it attracts young or soon-to-be gun owners (and thereby making new ones). At the end of the day, it’s just FUNNY. GTFOver it people.
I’ll crawl back under my rock now 🙂
+1
I heartily agree. It made me smile. I might have to buy a box just to have one.
And what will the company do for an encore?
Maybe they can get Bart Simpson or Sponge Bob to do a promo. Hank Williams could sing a ditty, he’s got some free time now…
Ammo that kills zombies? Meh. A head shot with Tula will do the same thing at a quarter of the price. But if Hornady comes out with ammo that turns people into zombies, I’ll order a couple or fifty cases for sure.
I always thought people used the term zombie as a euphemism.
Eh, they’re cashing in on our current zombie craze. Even the CDC jumped on the bandwagon…

It’s silly and I sure won’t be buying any, not that I buy anything from Hornady anyways, but I won’t fault a business for trying to make a little money off some Call of Duty playing kids. I figure it won’t hurt anything but their wallets.
Think on this…with over 20 million people in the USA alone that have/use/are taking mood altering drugs (psychotropics) and have a 30 day supply or less, the term Zombie will become a reality should SHTF and these meds not be available just like we are beginning to see shortages now (but that’s a whole different conspiracy theroy). Good video, but I think my current ammo will perform just as well.
“The Walking Dead” from AMC is back for season 2. Maybe that was part of the reason…
Hipsters in the marketing department at Hornady? How about some decent 6BR brass for less than what Lapua charges?
So where can I get a box? Been looking all over with no success.
People who into zombies and guns will go for this stuff, and others won’t. Simple. I don’t think it will hurt Hornady’s overall sales. This ad will not influence my decision to buy or not buy Hornady ammo. I will not buy this zombie stuff. For me, it’s an over-priced gimmick.
That guy wastes ammo.
I’m no CoD playing kid, and I can enjoy a little bit of marketing. I’ll probably pick up a box or 2 and hang on to it so that I can remember the zombie fad when I’m 90.
But I think it’s well past the hipsters now and moving mainstream. When Brad Pitt is making WWZ and Natalie Portman is making Pride and Prejudice and Zombies- we’ve pretty much jumped the shark.
Finally, ammunition manufacturers are beginning to take the zombie threat seriously.
-D
Yeesh, that guys needs to stop with the Braveheart battle cries and just place clean single shots to the skull.
I don’t see what the big deal is I’m gonna see if I can get a few boxes of 9mm, 45ACP, and .223 I mean how is this worse then say a zombie lower from spikes tactical.
I think I’ll use it on my neighbor’s cats………………..(If you didn’t catch that this is sarcasm, you haven’t been on the internet for long).
I wanna full-auto M4 🙁
ha ha.
Worth buying a box just to piss of an “anti”
I’ll be watching the news to see how long it takes some hippie lawyer to sue Hornady over this. While Zombie ammo is just a gimmick, so was Joe Camel, and Marlboro is still paying for the lawsuits over that. When some teenager decides to play real life Nazi-zombies their families would love to lay blame anywhere but on themselves and their failed attempt at parenting.
The person that thought this up is brilliant!!!! Oh, and I’m one of those “hippie lawyers” (maybe, I was in high school and college in the 70’s) that previous idiot was referring to. Incidentally, I deal with zombies every day. Most of them work for insurance companies. I’m buying a box of every caliber I can get. “Just in case”, you never know. If your offended by this, loosen up and get a life. The ammo companies have been raping us non stop for the last few years with their absurd prices that are never going to go back down now that the shooting public has demonstrated that it will pay any price they ask. So a company that gives me something to smile about for a change is going to get my business. Right on Hornady! Keep on truckin!
Hornady Zombie Max & Hornady Critical Defense ammunition are the same round except one tip is green and the other tip is red. However Zombie Max is $3.00 cheaper per box and the box looks pretty cool. Who doesn’t love good marketing.
As far as “Oh my God what will the children do.” They will do the same thing when the see a bottle of Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum in a store, NOTHING.
I purchased some of this. I dont believe in zombies or anything, it is just a way of marketing personal or home defense ammo. and its not really any more expensive than any other personal or home defense ammo.
I am a fairly new gun enthusiast, and my knowledge of ammunition is elementary at best. I picked up a box of these because I thought they were cool looking self defense rounds. Would these not be ideal SD rounds? .45 ACP should I not carry them as self defense rounds? I bought them because I knew hornady was a descent manufacturer.
I resent the “hippie lawyer” comment. As a former ACLU member (thank God some group looks after our civil liberties), Greenpeace member (Save The Whales!), current NRA
Life Member( “if your not a liberal when your young you have no heart–if your not a conservative when your old you have no brain”), ardent military firearms collector and life time hunter (oh yeah, and hated personal injury lawyer–until the insurance company screws you) I’ll happily sue anybody that behaves unreasonably and causes injury to someone else. (What a novel idea, the common man can take a corporation to court when it puts it’s profits above acting responsibly!) But I ain’t no hippy! I don’t think. Then again, I’m not quiet sure what a hippie is. I love the Hornady marketing on this and the fact that someone in a suit and tie has the cajones to do something that may tick off the political correctness zombies with the half formed brains. Anyone from either side who gets all twisted up about this needs to get a sense of humor and a life. (If case you don’t understand sarcasm the hippie comment really doesn’t bother me. As a member of three groups that it is politically correct to disparage (Christians, lawyers and white males) I’m kinda used to inane statements by the intellectually challenged. I’ve got some 9mm, 7.62×39, 223, and 12ga. zombie loads. If I just had some 7.5 French for my Mas 49/56 I’d be ready for the apocalypse. (Are you listening Hornady?) You never know.
Darn, I must be an idiot. Or maybe the “hippie lawyer” comment really does get to me! This is rich! I just see I already posted a response to this some months ago. I guess I just learned something about myself (“me thinks he protesteth to much”). At least I see my attitude about all this is consistent.
