Reliably, every single day, the Gun Reviews section of the website is in the top 10 for most pageviews. Which makes sense, since that’s what we’re known for. Almost a year ago I wrote and implemented a program that would let our readers parse through the massive reviews database to find the specific review they’re interested in reading, and it has been a massive success so far having been used literally millions of times. And it gets better.
Today I’m releasing the latest version, which includes a text based search function. You can now narrow your search to only specific models and manufacturers and find reviews even easier. You can find it under the heading “Search Reviews” on the Gun Reviews page. There are also a ton of optimizations that have gone on behind the scenes, but I’m guessing you don’t really care about that.
Needless to say, it’s not pretty. But it works. And if you can think of a way to make it work better, please let me know.
Cool!
Can you share how you store metadata?
And I’m interested in hearing about the internal optimizations!
I google the gun I’m interested in and just pick the TTAG link.
Same here, glad they’re including an internal search function.
That’s how I discovered TTAG: Googling and looking through a bunch of results, researching the Sig SP2022.
Funny I was just searching for that same gun today.
…ummm, does it work? I cannot get it to do so. “Ruger” was entered as the manufacturer with “all”, and the result was just the “go to beginning” arrows.
What am I doing wrong?
I’ve got 2 suggestions to make the search better.
1) move the search bar to the top. It took me a long time to realize it even existed 1/2 way down on the right side between the ads.
2) make sure all the meta data is accurate. sometimes I pick a few criteria to try and find a certain type of gun, but it doesn’t work. then i use google, and it turns out the reviews are there. It seems like this mostly happens with older reviews, so maybe not everything was retroactively updated?
Anyway, you asked so I responed. I love the site. I’ve learned as much here as about all the other sites put together. I hope you guys keep up the great work.
I’d love to see a search option for gear, especially optics.
I’d like to see a one-page index by title of all 2395 articles.
You mean 17000?
The published post list has 17050 entries as of this moment.
