Madonna’s tour manifesto has hit the net via myspace (like Madonna, somehow it still exists). In it, she explains why she uses firearms so provocatively (in her dreams) on stage.

β€œIt’s true there is a lot of violence in the beginning of the show and sometimes the use of fake guns – but they are used as metaphors. I do not condone violence or the use of guns. Rather they are symbols of wanting to appear strong and wanting to find a way to stop feelings that I find hurtful or damaging. In my case its wanting to stop the lies and hypocrisy of the church, the intolerance of many narrow minded cultures and societies I have experienced throughout my life and in some cases the pain I have felt from having my heart broken . . .

β€œUltimately as we follow through the journey of my story, the audience can see quite clearly what I see – That the enemy is within and the only way to survive Disappointment Disapproval Judgment Heartbreak Jealousy Envy And Hatred Is with Love – not with revenge – not with guns and not with violence. In spite of all the chaos and darkness and intolerance we seem to be encountering more and more in the world, We cannot allow our anger or bitterness to swallow us up. We come to understand that there is an innate and pure love inside us all and we have to find a way to tap into it.

β€œAnd we can’t do it by being victims or placing the blame or pointing the finger at others. But by recognizing that the enemy is within And when we come to terms with it And accept it And struggle to change ourselves, Then we can change the world without hurting anyone and we can inspire others to do the same. When you watch a film there are usually good guys and bad guys to help illustrate this point, Sometimes I play both. I enjoy acting out this journey. For none of us are perfect and we all have our own journey of growth to go on.

β€œIt’s very important to me as an artist that my show not be taken out of context. It must be watched with an open heart from beginning to end. I am sure if it is viewed this way, the viewer will walk away feeling inspired, Invigorated and will want to make the world a better place. And this of course was always my intention.”

Nothing to do with selling tickets then.

  1. So she doesn’t condone the use of guns… and yet she uses guns in her show????? And she doesn’t see the hypocracy in that??? I guess she IS a natural blonde.

    • It occurs to me that not condoning the use of guns is very much like not condoning the use of shovels. A gun is a tool, and a context-free blanket statement like that makes no sense at all.

  2. And anyone who cares will now raise a hand–anyone? Hm?

She’s a celebrity. We can argue how talented she is, but her whole schtick is to be outrageous. Here’s a clue, Madonna. When you do something shocking, you change the effect when you say right afterward, I didn’t mean it. It turns into a desperate attempt to be cute.

  3. Yep, go tell the Africans being slaughtered by warlords intent on genocide that guns wouldn’t make their world a better place and that the enemy is within themselves.

Go tell that to the peoples here in the US, where lives are saved daily by law-abiding gun owners.

Anyone ever wonder why children and celebrities are overwhelmingly leftist? What’s the one thing they have in common? Complete detachment from reality.

  4. After reading her statement, I’ve come to the irrevocable conclusion that Madonna is seriously tripping.

  5. She doesn’t condone the use of guns, yet she uses them in her show. She doesn’t condone the use of guns, yet she *really* loved hunting with her custom-made Holland & Holland side-by-side. She must be very intelligent to embrace contradiction so warmly and without the slightest hint of irony.

Oh, wait, she’s not a Columbia University philosophy professor, but just a worn-out celebutard? Now I understand.

  6. Everyone is an artist these days. (eyes rolling here) Really Madonna? Do you seriously imagine that your show’s attendees are really going to be thinking or emotionally ingraining those pop-psychology thoughts?

“to stop the lies and hypocrisy of the church, the intolerance of many narrow minded cultures and societies”
    — Seems to me that Ms. Madonna has a serious case of wanting to be a member of some clergy preaching up her own religion onto people. The most intolerant and narrow minded place that I have experienced and lived in was the culture within the City of San Francisco. No joke. It is only a tolerant place if you embrace all their extreme loonism. Political Correctness is an ideology that is a rigid modern religion.

Madonna is not even an attractive MILF anymore.

    • Lame, lame, lame. Madonna defined herself as a looker, not a thinker and that was for very good reasons. Now she’s no longer a looker and still isn’t a thinker. The driving force behind “Like a Virgin” has precious little to add to any firearms related argument.

  7. I read this because I read everything you guys post. Everything.

I want the last 90 seconds of my life back.

I want you to not do this to me again.

  8. Um Kay….
I agree with Matt 90 seconds of my life gone!
The humanity of it all!!!! What about the children I tell you, something must be done to save the children from Madonna!

  9. I couldn’t get past the opening salvo.

Boilerplate Hollywood response to guns is something like “it’s fun that we get to play with these, but it would be really bad if they were loaded with real ammo.” Living vicariously only goes so far, Hollywood.

  10. What a bunch of self hating bull…

    The enemy is within? Um…

Sure, we are our own greatest enemies but the last time i checked, assault, rape and murder victims should NOT be asked to blame themselves…

Can you imagine the defense in a sexual assault case? “Your honor, clearly, this woman WANTED to be raped”.

We live a weird society where public entertainment figures are regarded as actually having valid or relevant opinions…

  11. “I do not condone violence or the use of guns. Rather they are symbols of wanting to appear strong and wanting to find a way to stop feelings that I find hurtful or damaging.” Not buying the spin. Get a therapist and don’t play with equipment you don’t understand.

  12. I liked her better when she was the Material Girl. At least then she was honest about who she was.

She was too stupid to realize that using a gun as a prop in her show made her a hypocrite. When she was called on it, this is the result. A rambling pile of post hippie, new age BS that in and of it self, make no sense what so ever. Fortunately I stopped halfway throught the second paragraph when it became obvious, she has no idea what she’s talking about.

100 years ago, entertainers were not widely regarded and treated in some cases, as second class citizens. Some one to sing and dance for honest working folks and to entertain them with the antics. Someone to make a fool out of themselves for our amusement. We paid them little and society certainly did not consider their opinions as anything worth listening to. Mass media has elevated them to a position, not commensurate with their intelligence. There are exceptions of course but taken as a whole, the entertainment community would do well to keep their mouths and opinions to themselves and just entertain us.

  13. Everyone just take it easy and be a little nicer to madonna. You don’t know what she’s going through. Her life is a sad story; being right handed and left eye dominant is a cursed existance and we all need to be a little more understanding of that.

  14. Just like most every other person, she feels that she should be armed while most other people should not, since she knows that she is a safe operator and she doesn’t trust others to be the same – she is “special”.

In my life experiance, when people constantly talk what could happen, do so because they have fantasized about doing the same thing. People that are worried about trusting someone to pay thier exact half of the lunch bill(to the penny) are the ones that won’t pay thier part of the tax or the tip. People in political power think they(and only them, outside of LE) should have a firearm for protection.
Wake up, we all need to be able to defend ourselves.
