Innumerate media types will look at the NSSF’s graph of adjusted background check data and thrill to the fact that May, 2022’s total was down significantly from the 2020 spike and the 2021 total.
But if you look at the May, 2022 bar on the graph above in relation to the May numbers in The Time Before years, you’ll see that last month’s adjusted NICS total was about 20% higher than it’s been in any previous May. Let that sink in for a minute. Americans are still buying guns a relatively blistering pace and with the current push in Washington to take advantage of the Buffalo and Uvalde shootings, that isn’t likely to change any time soon.
The NSSF’s Mark Oliva tells us . . .
Background checks for firearm sales remain strong. May marks 34 months that background checks for the sale of a firearm exceeded 1 million. Americans continue to buy firearms for personal safety. These gun owners are law-abiding Americans who use their firearms for lawful purposes daily. They reject the attempts by special interest groups to paint them with the same broad brush those who criminally misuse firearms.
The tragic events in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, are sobering remainders that there are those in our society who have no respect for the law or innocent lives. Every law-abiding adult American has the right to defend themselves and their loved ones against that evil.
Here’s the NSSF’s press release . . .
The May 2022 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,174,791 is a decrease of 11.3 percent compared to the May 2021 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,324,419. For comparison, the unadjusted May 2022 FBI NICS figure 2,272,187 reflects a 29.1 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 3,206,589 in May 2021.
The trend for this year continues as May 2022 figures are over a million and are the third strongest for the month on record, surpassed only by May 2021 and May 2020.
Please note: Twenty-five states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers.
The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks and permit rechecks used by states for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. NSSF started subtracting permit rechecks in February 2016.
Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide an additional picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions for sales or transfers of new or used firearms.
It should be noted that these statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS. They do not represent the number of firearms sold or sales dollars. Based on varying state laws, local market conditions and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.
That’s all fine and dandy, need more emu.
Man I wish I had an emu factory, none of my emu would be sent over seas for a virtue signal. Nope itd stay right here in the U.S. to arm its citizens.
Went to my LGS yesterday and a very old guy who goes to my church was buying the 2nd to the last Maverick88 shotgun they had for $199…I have no definite plans for a new gat. Ammo & accessories are in my plans. If slow Joe & the dims succeed in banning parts buying from online all you folks who never formed good relationship’s with your LGS will wish you had!
“If slow Joe & the dims succeed in banning parts buying from online”………
Does one of his Executive Orders and/or one of the proposed Gun Ban Bills by Democrats actually do that? For parts like Barrels, Magazines, and Stocks?
The question is: how many out 1 million sold are “weapons of war’?
Every single one if they keep poking the bear……
Those damn “super-owners” at it again. They must each have 500 guns at this point.
Passed that mark couple decades ago with pedal to the metal since. If one knows how many guns one has, one does not have near enough guns. The handle is how many on my person every waking moment. But, we have enough guns, hoard ammo for the TRE dead ahead.
The stats presented in the article are real proof that Americans do not want to surrender ANY of their guns, regardless of what Biden or the media try to portray. It’s also obvious that a substantial number of “never gunners” are joining the owner’s club.
By any means possible, contact your US Senator, particularly if he/she/it is on the ballot in November. Make it politely clear, in no-uncertain terms, where you stand on the issue. Provide the phone number to all your friends and like-minded colleague as well.
US Congressional switchboard phone is (202)224-2161.
Ask to be connected to one of your senators, call back to speak to the other when you’re finished. If you have a 2A supporter, call to reinforce your opinion and thank that person for all the support in the past.
Get busy.
Yep gun control sure is a winning idea with the American public.
After several months of ordering parts for another carbine build/assembly I purchased a stripped Anderson lower in May. And for the first time I tried an Aero Precision M4E1 stripped upper and was so impressed I went back to my FFL and purchased another Anderson and another M4E1. I also took advantage of numerous Memorial Day e-mail offers from various manufacturers and saved some moola on parts that can be here one day and gone the next…like ammo.
On the other hand…It was obvious blame game useful idiots who adore Gun Control wanted to lynch people attending the NRAAM. Unfortunately for the finger pointing lynch mob their Gun Control Agenda had everything to do with supplying defenseless children and adults for the lone perpetrator. Gun Control Policy at that school was firearms must be locked in a vehicle trunk. Calls for help went out to people with guns to come to the rescue because school guns were busy protecting the trunks of parked vehicles.
It’s really not rocket science…
1) The Second Amendment is one thing.
2) The criminal misuse of firearms, bricks, bats, knives, vehicles, etc. is another thing.
3) History Confirms Gun Control in any shape, matter or form is a racist and nazi based Thing.
DW, did you attend the NRAAM? As I always do, struck up numerous conversations with boys in blue while attending. They were laughing at the demonstrators. Purposefully moved their barricades into the sun for their tanning pleasure. Three “attendees” slipped into the Sunday Prayer Breakfast…..looking just not quite right being there…..hat not removed during Pledge/Anthem, hands at sides rather than over hearts, no amens at prayer end….. As meeting commenced, they stood up shouting protests, and were politely, forcefully encouraged to exit. Enjoyed hearing Marc Robinson, Lt Gov NC and famed speaker at Raleigh City Counsel.
Side note: Except for my EDC which accompanied me during the NRA – Houston road trip, I left all my guns “home alone.” Upon returning, I determined not one shot had been fired, not one neighbor had been shot. Good guns, good, guns, well done. Guess my guns are just lazy, under achievers.
FYI- it appears (via Frontlines head) that an organization was attempting to purchase annual memberships for people to take part in various events as protesters. I saw no evidence of it at any event, however. Were this true I’d have expected crap during the Noem/Cruz/M Robinson/DJT ILA event. I was very close to stage and saw none
The protesters across the street were at times loud but ineffective. Chants were lousy and mostly unintelligible, but amusing just the same. The huge LE presence prevented much interaction between NRA and cretins and the cops on hand were definitely supportive of both 2A and NRA.
Hopefully, that will continue for a thousand more months. If every household in ‘Murica has 10 or more guns, burglars, home invaders, and other vermin will reconsider their career paths.
It doesn’t matter how many gunms you got if the law dont start siding more with the good guys.
in other words, the stupid slaves should stop funding the communist in gov’t.? Maybe SEPARATE from them like the founders and Jesus said to? Amerika is in short supply of back bones. A 2nd amed. is useless to cowards
Imagine the numbers if you could FIND WHAT YOU WANTED…
Once agian. Thank you joe burden, herr dacian and mineriq.
People need to also focus on food, water and other items as well.
……medical supplies and basic medical skills.
Having a well rounded IFAC handy in ALL situs is also good idea.
James and Ed. Truer words. I would add. Be as debt free as possible. That is a boon in bad times.
👍jwm. 💯%!
Well june started with a budget shotty for me.
Amazing, isn’t it, that a small number of super-collectors can skew the numbers by each buying a million guns per month. Meanwhile, a pistol and a few boxes of nine mil is an arsenal.
Nobody needs a massive military-grade caliber like 9mm. Get yourself a .177. Go out on the balcony, and fire two blasts.
“….last month’s adjusted NICS total was about 20% higher than it’s been in any previous May.”
M&P 15-22, baby! Guess how many magazines I bought…..
You’re welcome.
Somehow the issue of “gun control” with the public seems to be going to the wayside. People seem to realize that the ability to be able to protect yourself has won out over fear.
I did my best. Hope to add another before that 36-month mark (long gun lego thing).
Hopefully it triples this month… send Washington a lesson they wont soon forget…fbj
The video that Brandon Hererra did was hilarious! He infiltrated the protesters and made them look like fools.
