“Peace is not kept by guns. Guns are kept by those who do not have enough love in their hearts for their fellow men, women and children in the hope that keeping those guns will defend them against hatred. But guns cannot defend against hate, only love can do that. Guns are not needed for peace. Love keeps the peace.” – Maren Mecham in Love not guns [via sltrib.com]

  1. I’m not looking for peace lady, I’m looking for defense when those with hate come looking for me.
    Pretty simple.

    • Perhaps peace is sufficient for this idealistic fool who lives in the pristine, low crime, white bread world of Salt Lake City. For the rest of us who live in the real world, we’re confronted by hate and violence on a daily basis and “love sweet love” alone won’t get us home safely. So, as much as I’d like to “get on board the love train” and “give peace a chance”, I’ll utilize common sense and listen to my instinct for self-preservation while she enjoys her world of “rainbows and lollipops”.

      • I left a post on the original story. I doubt it will get a response. While she lives in an all-white, upper middle class neighborhood in Salt Lake or its environs, she is naively unaware that progressive policies by Salt Lake politicians are creating the same violent, predatory, drug fueled criminal underclass in her own backyard as exist in Detroit, LA, Chicago and Baltimore. Many who have lived there for years are finding that yes, they have to lock their doors and not leave purses and wallets in cars. There are youth who run with gangs on Friday and Saturday nights then serve the sacrament to congregations on Sunday morning. She is dangerously, irresponsibly naive about human nature as well as guns.

That said, I would love to go to her neighborhood so that I can see the pretty unicorn who fart rainbows. Does anyone know if magical creatures can be captured on a digital camera?

  2. I’ll have to remember that the time I’m confronted by a hateful Hi-Point at a gas station.

“Hands up, no eye contact, toss the fake wallet… transition to [LOVE, LOVE, LOVE].”

    • You have a fake wallet too? Great minds think alike. I wonder how many of us do this. I always carry a fake wallet when in Seattle. Lots of Antifa there.

    • I want that blond-haired white lady to stroll into a poor inner-city neighborhood all by herself, without a cell phone, wearing flattering clothing, and holding a sign that says “I don’t have a cell phone or gun because my love will overcome hate.” and tell us how that works out.

  3. Wow, just wow. According to her, you should just hug the person who’s shooting at you. Is that it?

Some people are just dumber than a box of rocks!

  4. These are the people who call for help and don’t understand why they aren’t there yet! As they say “a liberal is someone who hasn’t been mugged yet”.

    • That might not be true. If they were beaten good enough at their last mugging it could’ve wiped out / blocked out their memory of the event(s).

It’s kinda like “This ain’t my first rodeo… but I got knocked out at all the other ones so, what’s goin’ on?”

    • I don’t think there is anyway that she could be even semi successful in dealing with the people in her life if she believed this. I suspect that she is lying, maybe unconsciously, but certainly egregiously.

  5. Egads! She’s right man! You can’t hug your children with nuclear arms and… And… Yeah I got nothin sorry thought I could go somewhere with that but the idiocy was just too strong.

  6. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Albert Einstein did NOT advocate disarmament. Einstein signed the letter that led to the Manhattan Project. King kept firearms for self-protection. In fact, he even applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon. While King was more of a pacifist later in life, he was trying to convince America in general, not a bunch of Klan members at his door. Maren needs to realize that guns are not needed for peace ONLY when the other side also wants peace. Now about that….

  7. I do not keep firearms to defend against hate, but against EVIL. All of this recycled 1960s shit is absolutely nothing because these people do not recognize the existence of good and evil.

Love might be the weapon to use against hate, but it’s absolutely powerless against evil.

    • Stellar comment. Reminds me of my favorite quote:

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”
      – Jeff Cooper, The Art of the Rifle

  8. So the Stoneman Douglas High School students have no one to blame but themselves because they did not love enough? Got it.

    • DING DING DING!!!
      Interwebz winner for today.

Snowball’s chance that any anti would read her dribble, and comprehend your insightful comment.
Their brain would explode if attempting that feat.

  9. Any reasonable person can and will see the flaw in her statement. Unfortunately liberals were born defective – they do not possess the ability to think logically. Guns do indeed defend against hatred. It happens every day and never makes the news.

Some day she may have to require the services of an armed police officer. When that day comes she may have the intelligence to see the error of her statement. We can only hope.

    • The feminazis will never be able to change the fact that grandpa GAVE women, out of his benevolence, of his heart the vote.

He naively thought they would quit bitching, shut up, and put out but we never learn.

  10. What utter and useless crap from a pot smoking and granola crunching idiot. Tell you what, moron, go tell Pol Pot and Caligula, ISIS and FARC that you love them and want a hug. I truely despise these sorts of fools since they would invite in their own (and ours) distruction because they believe good intentions and unicorn farts are enough to change the world.

Her foolish ideology only works if everyone plays by the same rules and wants the same thing. But so long as even one person wants to see the world burn then she is naive and worse.

    • Yeah, can you imagine how world History would have panned out had the United States done nothing more than tell the Japanese people that we love them! Oh, and of course how History would have panned out had the United States and the United Kingdom did nothing more than promise infinite love for Hitler.

What is even more disturbing than her position is the fact that politicians will sell us out to get her vote.

  12. It’s a trap – you’ll give her a hug, she’ll accuse you of rape.

  13. I am probably one of the most passive individuals there is, but I refuse to allow myself, or my family, to be another statistic.

  14. G uns can’t take the hate out of the heart of a man but they c an take the heart out of a hateful man, and sometimes that’s the loving thing to do. Tough love, but still love.

  15. So, lady… you’re telling me that all the women who have been beaten, strangled, stabbed and shot by their boyfriends and husbands were actually responsible for their own deaths because they didn’t “love” their attackers enough?

Makes a whole lot more sense to realize that many of those women would not have died if they’d had a rational tool (and the guts) to defend themselves against such hate.

I’m sorry for you, lady. The only rational outcome of a lethal attack – man or woman – is the death or serious injury of the attacker at the hands of the intended victim or their guardian. I hope you never have to learn that the hard way as I did:
    https://thepriceofliberty.org/the-man-i-might-have-killed/

  16. i would love her if it would shut her up. best twenty seconds of her life.
because all you need is love. just ask yoko, oh no!

  17. She’s selling danger, pain, and death.

Peace gets its a_ _ handed to it daily by people who don’t give a FV<k if Ms. Meacham exists, much less continues to suck air.

Does MIGHT make RIGHT??? YOU BET YOUR ASS.

MIGHT MAKES WHATEVER THE Fv<K IT WANTS. Weakness is provocative. Don't provoke anyone.

  18. If only those kids at Parkland had loved that boy enough he wouldn’t have killed them.
If only those people had loved Dahmner enough he wouldn’t have eaten them.
If only that girl had loved him enough, he wouldn’t have raped her. All her fault.
According to this woman, they were all just asking for it.

  19. Foolish lady. Reminds me of the picture back in the 60s of the army dude with a daisy in his barrel.

  20. “Well, in the first place, an armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life. For me, politeness is the sine qua non of civilization. That’s a personal evaluation only. But gunfighting has a strong biological use. We do not have enough things that kill off the weak and stupid these days. But to stay alive as an armed citizen a man has to be either quick with his wits or with his hands, preferably both. It’s a good thing.” – Robert A. Heinlein “Beyond This Horizon”

    • I don’t really think an armed society is a polite society. I think an armed society is a respectful one.

When someone has the ability to defend themselves you respect their life, their property, their family, their human rights, etc. You don’t have to be polite to show respect. I can be polite to you while my friend pickpockets you. If you were openly carrying a gun I could yell all kinds of names at you, I could get in your face, but I will respect you enough not to touch you. When the gun is concealed people are more likely to victimize you out of ignorance of your capabilities; they will bully you because they think they can. People get in cops’ faces and say some of the most horrible things they can think of, but they don’t cross the line with the cops instead they attack the defenseless.

Keeping and bearing arms can be more of a deterrent than words on a piece of paper. A lot of people are willing to tempt being caught breaking rules, they are not so willing to catch a bullet with their bodies.

  21. The unsaved world has much to say about “love” these days, promoting harmony and ecumenical compromise at all cost; but that is NOT Biblical love. So many people nowadays condemn religion and speak of “love” as a magic solution to the world’s problems. They make such statements as: “If only the world had love then all the killing would stop” or “If you have love then nothing else matters.” They are dead wrong!

This apostate form of New Age thinking is especially common; ecumenism flourishes, modesty is almost non-existent and true Christianity is very unpopular. What does the Bible teach?

“There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” It is infinitely better to trust the Scriptures and obey the Gospel; than to foolishly trust one’s instincts and feelings and go to Hell (2nd Thessalonians 1:8,9). No amount of love will suffice on Judgment Day when the books are opened and one has to give account for all their sins (Revelation 20:11-15).

    Love is meaningless without TRUTH.

    • Yep. When right becomes wrong and wrong becomes right and lies serves as truth. And I would bet this woman also supports the “right” of a woman to murder her own unborn child. Cuz all you need is love!

  22. War is peace…freedom is slavery. Love is protecting me and mine. Smoke some pot weirdo…

  23. I am ashamed at all the vitriol I read here about this gal. I applaud her courage. I wish there were more (Democrats) just like her. Attrition, it’s a thing.

    • WOW! that little boy Almost made the connection, that good guys need guns for protection against bad guys with guns. Then his dopey father interrupted him said the flowers will protect us. The boy looked confused, Even children can see thru Bull S#*t liberal lies.

    • Even a little kid has the natural instinct of self preservation and self determination. It’s the elders who strip that from them when they are too young to “talk back.”

When they tried to indoctrinate me, I would ask the dreaded “why?” or I would simply escape. When I was around 7 years old I remember running away from the so called school, walking home trying not be seen by police and sneaking back into my home so my parents wouldn’t send me back. I tried to stay away from the people who were trying to manipulate me — I guess that’s why my English skills, when I was young, weren’t at the same level as the white kids.

  24. “Guns are not designed as a peacekeeping tool; guns are designed to kill. Killing is their sole purpose and usage and therefore cannot be used to keep any sort of peace.”

So, we shouldn’t arm police officers or the military?

” Peace is not the absence of war, it is the ability to retain love and calm in our hearts despite the craziness of life around us.”

    I smell patchouli…

“Some people are so afraid, bigoted, and/or unloving that they feel safe when they have a weapon that could kill other people, but that is never really the answer to those internal maladies. Fear, bigotry and hatred are not overcome by owning or using the tools of destruction”

And if, while embracing my inner love, I should run into an unloving person wielding a tool of destruction while I’m at the gas station one night….?

This woman is among the most sheltered, naive people I’ve ever seen.

    • Same here. I had to double check the calendar, to make sure it wasn’t April 1st, and double check the source, to make sure it wasn’t Harvard’s “The Onion.”

  25. That’s why I believe in long engagements. If any girlfriend of mine ever dropped a huge, heaping, steaming pile of crap as that, I would drop her like a hot potato. No way I would ever get locked into a lifetime of that staggeringly infantile, campfire kimbaya crap, myself, let alone subject kids to it.

    • Unfortunately, I had a quick engagement. My loving wife decided she didn’t like something I did and when I’d had enough arguing (after 4 hours straight), she lovingly got out a loaded revolver to try to convince me just how much she loved me. Now she’s my ex. Life is good. I tell my boys over-and-over to take their time getting married.

  26. Women and children, the treasures men were designed by nature to protect, are being USED as vehicles to remove from men the very means to protect them. Flame up the politically correct claptrap, I don’t give a s@#t.

  27. One question for you, Ms Mecham.

Do you lock your doors at night?

If you do, you’re a hypocrite.

  28. “Si vis pacem, para bellum”
And if you love your family, you protect them. Superior firepower means increased safety means i love my family. Simple and straight.

  29. All you need is sharia and a burqa, you’ll be begging for a few nice people with guns (to put you out of your misery).

  30. “Why can’t we fight and win, Mommy?”

“Because they have weapons and technology. We just have love.”

  31. Gun control: A love for humans so great that it is blind to human nature, and would leave victims without defense from criminals and tyranny.

  32. That lady could not be any more wrong! Mass killers are already full of hate. “Loving” them is not going to make them better. The only thing that will stop a mass killer is someone else, the proverbial “Good Guy”, with a gun.

Concealed Carry is actually a nuisance. I would prefer to not have to carry. But, with all the wackos out there these days, it is the right thing to do. Carrying because you want to protect loved ones is the act of Love.

  33. I find times when love is useful – in bed with a bonny companion and immediately prior to that. Otherwise, I carry. I’m not full of hate, but I don’t trust anybody else not to be predatory.

  34. Liberalism/Progressivism is based on the sad denial of this simple fact: there is a difference between good and evil, and there will always be both in the world. Thinking much too highly of mankind’s ability to control the evil, they willingly become victims of the evil they do not resist.

  35. Well, she got one thing right. I don’t have much love for other people, especially if they are trying to kill me, rob me, screw me over, or take away my ability to defend myself from the above mentioned threats.

  36. Her whole article is dripping with maternal instincts, where she is a overseeing mother.

The answer is no. And there is nothing wrong with being prepared. My guns aren’t used for killing people. My guns are used for saving people (Me and my family).

  37. People like this white woman sleep comfortably because rough men stand ready to do violence on her behalf, when and if the time comes. George Orwell said this a very long time ago.
And it’s still true to this day.

  38. I wonder what she would think if a man was forcing himself into her. Is that love making or sexual assault?

  39. No reason I can’t have love in my heart AND a gun at my side. I suppose she thinks that fire extinguishers, condoms, and insurance are only for the loveless as well?

  40. Let me understand this. A lady from the state ranked 6th in the nation (according to guns and ammo) for being among the friendliest to guns and gun owners gets everyone here riled up. About what? Because she speaks her mind? Her husband, maybe a Mormon maybe not probably has a couple of hundred guns in his closet. Next you’ll be bashing the NRA. Oh wait…..

  41. A criminals Love for other peoples stuff is why I have a gun so I can show him how much Love hurts if you are not careful what you love.

  42. As Don Corleone said:
“I spent my whole life trying not to be careless. Women and children can be careless. But not men”.

  43. Firearm ownership is for people who love their neighbors, even the ignorant ones like Maren Mecham, and want to protect them from harm.

  44. Maran should walk into an ISIL training camp, and see how far that love will get her.

  45. You have to excuse her, she was home schooled. She skipped school and stayed home. Lack of education makes her without any knowledge of the true world the rest of us live in.

  46. I do love being lectured about life by suburban soccer mommies. The closest this woman’s insulated life has ever been to anything dangerous is watching Good Times reruns. I’d like to dump people like her in the ghetto for a few years. It might help rectify their idiotic world view. The ironic thing is that her cossetted world is only made possible by people ready to do violence on her behalf.

  47. God looks after women, children and fools . . .This snowflake qualifies on both the first and last count.

  48. sigh. idiot.
love is what makes you WANT peace. Guns is what makes the peace happen or else the other side has no reason to stop attacking if you are defenseless. maybe she should do a little research on this tiny place called AFRICA.

  49. The population of perfect people that doesn’t need guns to keep the peace doesn’t need government either.

  50. I prey….. I’m a very loving person, I do believe in love. Love of mankind, and protection of weaker individuals. That is why I LOVE the 2nd amendment of our constitution. Being a law abiding citizen of the United States of America and a resident of NYS, I’m appalled at the very ignorant views in liberal politics regarding our constitutional right to bear arms. I believe they really do think disarming the law abiding citizen will have a positive effect on society. It is astounding to me that this train of thought exists. This is not only impractical but a dangerous and an anti American policy. If the liberals love a communist system, then by all means LEAVE America and reside in another country of like policy. Don’t stay and further corrupt a system , the Constitution, written to protect (We the people) from the world of tyrant factions that plague us. Amen
