Air guns are breaking out all over! Yesterday we ran the SIG SAUER press release announcing their new ASP20 air rifle. In that post I confessed how unimpressed I was with the air rifle versions of SIG’s fully ballistic brethren. Well pump me full of air and shoot me at steel. There must be a big market for replica airguns. Air Venturi’s now offering low cost flights to Malaga. Wait. That’s not it . . .

They’ve cut a deal with the Springfield’s dealmakers to make replica airguns of the Illinois gunmaker’s guns. The air-powered not-firearms will “put the most historically significant firearm designs into the hands of airgunners, replica enthusiasts and airsoft fans alike.” Like . . . the Saint? We report, you deride.

About Springfield Armory®

In 1794, the original Springfield Armory was designated as our national armory by General George Washington, and began manufacturing muskets for the defense of our young, free Republic.  This monumental institution went on to serve as a think tank for developing innovative firearms concepts and producing some of the most storied rifle platforms in our country’s history.  The Armory functioned as a firearms supplier for every major American conflict until 1968 when the government sadly closed its doors. In 1974, two centuries after its inception, Springfield Armory Inc. in Geneseo, IL revived the iconic heritage of the Armory to carry on its legacy and restore the Springfield Armory name.

Springfield Armory Inc. engineers, manufactures and assembles their legendary M1A™, 1911 and SAINT® AR-15 lines of firearms in Geneseo, Illinois. Since 2001, Springfield Armory has enjoyed a strategic, collaborative partnership with the state-of-the-art factory in Croatia working hand-in-hand to develop and engineer the multiple award-winning line of XD® polymer pistols that have become staples in the US marketplace. We strive to honor this responsibility as guardians of the original Springfield Armory legacy by manufacturing the highest quality firearms to enable responsible citizens to preserve their right to keep and bear arms in the defense of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

With an unmatched emphasis on craftsmanship, performance and exceptional customer service, our mission is to forge superior firearms and provide the tools necessary to defend individual freedoms and equality for those who embrace the rights and principles secured by our Founding Fathers.  For more information, please visit us at: springfield-armory.com.

  1. Attention everyone: I hate airsoft guns. Why? Because the world is full of dip$hts who insist on opening the boxes and packages “to see what it looks like”. Here, I’ll spoil it for you, “IT LOOKS JUST LIKE IT’S PHOTOGRAPH ON THE BOX!”
Gawd, I hate cleaning up that aisle…
    🤠

  2. The irony is that if they didn’t spend the money to buy a license from Springfield and it was just an M14, it would sell better.

  3. I’m waiting for reports of Air Venturi selling out the airsoft rights community by accepting a carve-out that exempts them from some proposed Airsoft Dealer Licensing Act in Illinois.

  4. Other than one 1911 pattern Airsoft pistol I have for draw and fire exercises/training in the back yard, i have never understood the interest in these. There’s no recoil. There’s no report. There’s no distance. There’s minimal accuracy.

So basically you are buying a toy in an otherwise unattainable form factor. Boring safe full of wannabes.

Please explain this to me. I would really like to understand.

    • You got the cheap spring-powered one from Wal-Mart then. The report, recoil, and slide action of PTWs- Practical Training Weapons- is supplied by CO2/Green gas or a battery. True PTWs look, feel, and function near-identically to their real-world counterparts. Obviously there’s no muzzle flash or other nasty side-effects such as death, but they provide pretty impressive training value for much cheaper than Simunitions and much less mess than paintball.

    • I play airsoft. Not only is there value in training about movement communication, and all the other “tactical” stuff, but it’s pretty fun to go out and hang out with my friends and just relax.

    • Good point. Likewise, boxers shouldn’t spar, because a sparring partner isn’t going to be hitting as hard with the same bad intent. Nor should baseball players take BP, because the 60 year old batting coach isn’t throwing 99mph fastballs and 80mph sliders.

  5. I have a all-metal airgun replica of a Walther PPK. It’s pretty awesome as a toy (reciprocating slide, correct hammer action, etc) but that’s about it. Would have trouble hitting the broad side of a barn with it. But it’s cool and was both relatively cheap and doesn’t take up much space.

I also have a ‘real’ airgun that probably costs a lot less than any of these upcoming replicas and is not only a tack-driver but powerful enough to take out pesky varmits (with ammo so cheap that it puts a .22 to shame).

I don’t see room for a full-sized airgun in my collection unless it actually functions well; on the other hand, I’m waiting for that M1 to come in from CMP.
