Armalite is introducing their new AR-10A rifles at SHOT. The rifles build on the gunmaker’s experience with the AR-10 system, allowing them to accept standard magazines (instead of only the proprietary Armalite magazines). We’ve already posted quite a bit of information about these rifles. This is the first time I’ve been able to fire one. The one I demoed seemed to be recoiling to the right quite a bit; I’m not sure what that’s all about. The shots themselves were dead on. Well, as dead on as improperly installed sights can be (ArmaLite brought the wrong ones to the show). Recoil was surprisingly light for .308. That’s a very good thing indeed.
Nick, Was the thumb a little high on the barrel shroud? Is it normal to grip the rifle like that?
Its a new technique used by 3-gunners and military special forces groups for increased control.
It’s called the thumb break method Mike. Gives you better control of the rifle and gives you more of a stable shooting platform because your non dominant arm is extended completely.
Here’s a good pic of it being utilized with a vertical fore grip

Mike,
All those years trolling gun websites must have tought you a few things. You might not be a bad shot. Maybe you can run 3-gun competitions. 🙂
