There’s your October surprise. Uh, November. And it’s not all that much of a surprise, really. A new 1911 from Smith & Wesson is about as unexpected as a new only-slightly-different-from-the-base-model-but-more-expensive-Porsche. And just as pricey (relatively speaking). The $1539 Smith SW1911 Enhanced Action looks set to compete with . . . a whole lot of other entry-level high-end 1911s. Sic? Sick! The $314 premium over a standard SW1911 buys you a Performance Center Action Job (which usually feels as good as it sounds), a 3.5 – 4lbs. trigger pull, throated barrel (see: above), precision Crowned Muzzle, Polished Feed Ramp, Briley Spherical Barrel Bushing, 30-Lines Per Inch Checkering, Ambidextrous Frame Safety and Slide Ported Lighting Cuts (’cause a full-size 1911 kicks like a mule). All capitalized in the great Germanic tradition. Be advised: like every other damn gun these days, this one will sell out STAT.
