Back in January, Benjamin Srigley likely saved the life of young Jayeon Simon after he was set upon by three Pit Bulls. Srigley ran into his home, retrieved his Ruger 9mm pistol and opened fire on the attacking canines, killing one. That attracted a nearby DCPD beat officer who took out the other two. A clear case of a good deed done, right? It would have been, if Srigley didn’t live in Washington D.C. Instead, it’s possession of unregistered firearms that can get you a year in the pokey. But as washingtontimes.com details, authorities have deigned to be lenient. Kinda . . .
As part of the agreement, Benjamin Srigley, 39, was required to pay a $1,000 fine but will not have criminal charges filed against him for the three unregistered firearms and the ammunition that investigators found in his possession, said Ted Gest, a spokesman for the office of the attorney general.
“We took it into account that he saved this boy’s life,” Mr. Gest said.
That was mighty big of the attorney general, no? Well, not entirely.
Answering the door at his home, a duplex with a stone facade and well-manicured yard, Mr. Srigley held his own dog back from his front door and declined Friday to comment on the case because it is still technically pending in court. The office of the attorney general is deferring prosecution, meaning it will remain active while Mr. Srigley meets conditions set by authorities.
Who knows? If Srigley’s firearms had been destined for Mexican drug thugs instead of kept for his own personal defense, he might have gotten off scot-free.
The power to hold another man’s fate in your hands is just too tempting for these prosecutors, isn’t it. They couldn’t possibly forbear from flexing their muscles, no matter how unjust it might be to enforce the law in a particular case.
Yet they claimed they had the discretion not to prosecute Gregory.

The only reason they didn’t prosecute is so they can claim that the anti-gun laws have never been used to jail someone defending either themselves or others from harm on account of bad publicity.
I agree with ‘travis m.’, If they did prosecute then it would be in the criminal record books that someone committed a crime because they tried to save a boy’s life.

I think that maybe, for most people on this site, they consider the modern interpretation of ‘liberal’ to be the one and only definition. Most who have actually studied history at above a high school level, will realize the correct definition of a modern ‘liberal’ is more akin to ‘progressive’ than liberal. in the 1890s to the 1920s the ‘liberal’ was first minted as one whom believed in social reform, and NEVER thought to truncate someone’s rights.. Also, a little known tidbit, the Republican party was once the progressive party, until Roosevelt twisted it. I am no democrat or republican, but considering the way I would vote on issues I could be called a liberal – I believe in women’s sufferage, equal rights, equal pay based on skill and not on race/creed/religion – which are all ‘liberal’ trade marks from history. I also think that describes most people on this board.. What I think Niceguns meant as an insult, really isn’t given some context.

Given what a Ruger SR 9, mag full of what was likely nice hollowpoints cost and the charges he risked…he could’ve been looking at 2-3x the fine he got. Which only says they promote inaction instead of common human decency to not watch a kid torn apart by vicious dogs.

As someone else noted, what the heck was he supposed to do, let the kid get killed? These protectionists are incredibly twisted. I’d kick some money that gentleman’s way. We have to hang together, or we will surely hang separately, right?

…anyway…whoever starts the crime should be responsible for all incidental damages. As it is now, if someone tries to rape you, and in defending yourself you shoot a child, you’re going to jail for manslaughter. The rapsit should be the one charged with the death of the child: one more reason to not rape people.

correct. if you own a dog and it does harm to someone it should be your responsibility 100%. if makes perfect logical sense. that way there would be no need for laws just for “pit bulls” – all dogs that are running loose and that hurt someone would be impounded, potentially destroyed and the owners fined and perhaps jailed.

When you get down to it, this is exactly what is wrong with Washington DC and the people that infest the Capital building and White House.
Ben Srigley was the angle little Jayeon Simon needed at that pivotal moment. Had he not acted, Simon would almost certainly be dead and yet these “Persecutors” are fining him, threatening him, and denigrating him, when they should be honoring him, thanking him, and rewarding him.
Sadder yet is a society that stands by and allows this injustice to stand.
While I’m more than disappointed in the Attorney General’s fine on Mr. Srigley, I think we should keep in mind that this fine is “large” for one man, but infinitesimally small when divided amongst clear minded citizens. If every disappointed fellow human contributed just one penny, Mr. Srigley’s fine would not be a burden and he would not be disadvantaged in his change of residency.
As a neighbor, I’d be honored to have Ben Srigley living next to me.
Keep in mind, these situations frequently have some karma like qualities. This Attorney General is losing a neighbor of fine quality and hopefully, will get the neighbor he so richly deserves…

There is a store in my city populated by save the whales liberals. If I accidentally forgot to leave my gun in my truck & used it to save someone in a robbery situation I have no doubt in my mind I would be told to never come in the store again at the very least & at the worst they would testify against me at a wrongfull death trial. So I do what my CC license instructor said, mind my own f’n business. Different story if a little kid is in danger though, then I’m all in, Randy

I would be torn between not wanting to go to jail and forcing the prosecution to play out the full charges before a jury. Is there really any prosecutor that would want that kind of publicity? What are the chances that a jury would find you guilty in this case? This case just seems like a prime example to drive home the point of how idiotic these gun laws are. But then I don’t want to go to jail. Would I be that brave?
