Talk about misleading. First of all, who is the “you” of whom they speak? Methinks the people shooting and being shot in Manhattan aren’t the kind of people who matter – in the mainstream media scheme of things. Odds are they’re part of the city’s gang/drug trade, which employs (if that’s the right word) tens of thousands of people and generates tens of millions of dollars in revenue. More than that, this seemingly staggering increase in homicides is a [headline grabbing] percentage increase of a small number. Here are the stats . . .
Sixteen people were killed around the borough between the first of the year and Sunday. Over the same period last year, the figure was 11. That’s an increase of about 45 percent.
Shootings in the borough have also soared.
There have been 50 “shooting incidents’’ since Jan. 1, compared with 31 in the same time period in 2014 — an increase of about 38 percent. Some of these “incidents’’ involved more than one victim.
The number of shooting victims nearly doubled, from 33 to 61.
Wait. Not in Manhattan. “Around the borough” (of which there are five). Sigh. Did someone say never let a crisis – however manufactured – go to waste? Yes. Yes they did.
“City Hall better wake up soon,” a police source said. “When murders and shootings go up in Manhattan, everyone is affected,’’ he said, pointing out that crime impacts business, tourism and the city’s economy as a whole.
He said there are a variety of reasons, from the plummeting number of “stop-and-frisks’’ to the fact that the city needs more officers. “The cops’ hands are tied,’’ he said.
Yeah. That’s it. Those are the reasons for the homicide and “gun violence” increase: the law has tied the hands of the NYPD by forcing them to observe the presumption of innocence enshrined in the 5th, 6th, and 14th amendments of the United States Constitution. And 34k officers is nowhere near enough to tackle the Big Apple’s estimated 50k gang members. We need parity! Or . . .
How about the burghers of New York restore their residents’ gun rights? I know that’ll do sweet FA to curb gang-related violence, but it’ll make people feel better. Hey, it worth a shot. So to speak.
I see scientific Soviet Socialism is working so well in NY. Such a paradise. Yes, the Dictatorship of the Proletariat will flourish and usher in a new worker’s paradise.
” In 1988, the crime rate in the United States rises four hundred percent. The once great city of New York becomes the one maximum security prison for the entire country. A fifty-foot containment wall is erected along the New Jersey shoreline, across the Harlem River, and down along the Brooklyn shoreline. It completely surrounds Manhattan Island. All bridges and waterways are mined. The United States Police Force, like an army, is encamped around the island. There are no guards inside the prison, only prisoners and the worlds they have made. The rules are simple: once you go in, you don’t come out.” – Escape From New York
Ahh, if only. *sigh*
I kinda wanna watch that movie.
But… But… The SAFE act…
Yes the CRIMINALS are much safer after the passing of that act. They are loving it and the numbers are showing just that.
It’s often said when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Looks to be the case in NYC, Baltimore, and other bastions of statist utopia.
I thought the link to 50K Gang Members was going to an Amazon link for a DVD of the Warriors…
Great movie, or greatest movie? RIFFS!
Cut the jabber, you jive-ass turkey! Turnbull ACs for life!
Love the anniversary edition directors cut. The special features has some great interviews with many of the cast members.
A lot of ‘before they were stars’ moments in that great movie. Love the sound track too.
The future deliverer of the famous line “I thought you were going to kill me last?!”
And those lips.
Dexter’s father.
arg as a stats guy it grinds my gears when people are like “Ohhhh you’re this likely to have this happen to you!”…as if they’ve never heard of a thing called variance.
“You’re THIS likely to be gun murdered because this many people are gun murdered each year and this is how many people are in the country!”. gaaaaah
i’m not involved in a gang or the drug trade. i’m more likely to die biffing it in my shower.
Install non-slip coating on your shower’s floor. It’ll improve your chances of dying from “gun violence.”
OH MY GOD! ADHESIVE NON SLIP DUCKS CAUSE GUN VIOLENCE! OMG OMG OMG OMG!
“… the law has tied the hands of the NYPD by forcing them to observe the presumption of innocence enshrined in
the 5th, 6th, and 14thALL of the amendments of the United States Constitution.”There, fixed that for you.
I have a proposal. Start issuing gangbanger tags. We could have a drawing. I’d say 10k tags per year should bring the population back under control
As an ex-New Yorker, I’m a bazzillon % less likely to be murdered in de Blasio’s Manhattan than an Manhattanite because I don’t go there.
Why should I go anywhere I can’t bring my personal property?
Police that can’t do their job without violating the 4th, 5th and 6th Amendments should get into a line of work they can handle . . . maybe become a meter maid or valet.
“How about the burghers of New York restore their residents’ gun rights? I know that’ll do sweet FA to curb gang-related violence, but it’ll make people feel better. Hey, it worth a shot. So to speak.”
If the protection of the right to keep and bear arms merely made people ‘feel better,’ if the actual keeping and bearing of a firearm did not bring about actual increased safety both immediately and, through its social effects, over the long term, I wouldn’t give the right a second thought. After all, there’s a pill for that. The residents of NYC could just take one. I suspect most of them do.
Gang members and other professional criminals are wanton in their violence, often taking revenge indirectly, singling out family members or neighbors of their rival, easier targets, to “send a message.” If more honorable adults routinely owned and carried a handgun, and were not cowed by either custom or law from using it when appropriate, overall violent crime would fall in places like south Chicago, Detroit, the Bronx, and New Orleans.
That reasoned conclusion abstracted from experience is no doubt the reason NYC bankers and brokers hire so many clean-cut gunmen, out-sourcing an important function but by no means considering the function dispensable. Indeed, the hired guns of the bankers far exceed the firepower that the bankers themselves could provide even if they made it their primary occupation.
It is vastly cheaper for the honest fit adult public to equip themselves with a small gun and some training than to hire endless legions of police. The pistol costs half-a-grand, needs no pension or health insurance, and is there exactly when needed to stop a crime. Everyone seems to imagine that someone else is paying for all the police men and women. No. As ‘we’ blithely off-load the job of defense to expensive cops, we sink further and further into debt. Trillions of debt. Building thrift, economy, into the provision of our community services is very important. We seem inclined to learn the hard way.
From the backbench. HERE HERE.

As a native-born Bronxite, I object to having the land of my birth being lumped in with the failed states of Chiraq, the Motorless City and NOLA. The Bronx could kick all their asses. At the same time. And be home in time for lunch.
…but, apparently, not with legally carried hand guns.
Personally I avoid NYC (all boroughs) like the plague.
…but, apparently, not with legally carried hand guns.
There are more guns in some Bronx neighborhoods than there are in the entire state of Illinois. And they don’t need no stinkin’ permits to carry them.
True but the threat of armed resistance is potent. I seem to recall some scrote taking an unhealthy interest in my ’71 Mustang Mach 1 and remembering an urgent appointment elsewere when a laser dot (pointer) appeared on the dash near his face. Funny how they want no part of a determined property owner who MAY have a gun. I had a boss use a credit card imprinter to simulate the sound of racking a shotgun when some diaper stain tried to enter through the store’s bathroom window and he nearly broke his legs leaping down to the alley. Hmmmmmmmm
I lived in a bad part of a certain city for a while, where there were break-ins and associated assaults with near-monotonous regularity. The police “solution” was to have one additional car drive through one additional time per night. The only thing that benefitted was the local donut shop.
But the county sheriff unofficially let it be known he’d look the other way if the recently organized neighborhood watch just happened to include some folks prepared with something with more impact than a baseball bat. It wasn’t long before a youngster attempting to force his way through a garage wall (the windows being boarded over) encountered one such prepared member of the volunteer night crew of the neighborhood watch — who let him run.
Shortly thereafter, the break-ins dropped back to historic norms, and neighborhood watch members started getting more sleep, along with all us residents.
In a civilized country, the armed citizen WOULD substantially impact gang violence.
Except for the fact armed citizen would reduce the number of police. What interest would police have in reducing their ranks? Armed citizens would cull criminals and lower the need for prisons. Corrections have no interest in reducing their populations and get lower funding. Big business in justice…with taxpayers footing the bill.
Except for the fact armed citizen would reduce the number of police.
Which would be a win-win.
@Mk10108–Well put. The problem that most don’t want to admit is how the tangled web they have allowed to be weaved is just simply systemic corruption for profit by our Nobles. Most people have a hard time out of their own-self interest(greed&vanity) to cut the infected hand off to save the arm, and instead let it consume the whole.
Considering the NYPD’s shooting skills, 34K officers is definitely insufficient to take on 50K gang members.
340K officers would be more like it.
If there ever was a large shootout between the NYPD and the gangs, the NYPD’s rate of hutting innocent bystanders would substantially reduce the population of NYC.
“When murders and shootings go up in Manhattan, everyone is affected,’’ he means the elites. There are murders galore in the other four boroughs, but that’s just the “little people”. Doesn’t matter if it’s druggies or gang members dying, it disturbs the tranquility of the one percent.
In an article regarding crime in NYC, it said that according NYPD and FBI data that well over 90% of all violent crime was being committed by black and brown males. This is what led to Bloomers racist rant against gun ownership by these same groups. But even with those groups it is a small percentage committing violent crime.
Violent crime is higher when criminals don’t fear an armed response in their chosen ‘work place.’
why would such a B.S. story be repeated——health stats for one have been adjusted to try to show a reduction in asthma in the Bronx, crime stats adjusted to make nyc look safe—–I heard of armed officers that would not go to certain locations–, maybe a fast drive thru–with a shotgun————-this has been the normal documentation regarding all kind of stats in nyc for more than 15 years———but how let’s blame the new guy, being the body count is up.
Silly TTAG, the 34k NYPD cops are members of the biggest and most violent gang in the city.
You’re approximately twice as likely to die under a two-term president as you are under a one-term president.
How does the saying go? Stay away from stupid people in stupid places doing stupid things?
That pretty much defines any blue city.
