We’ve known it for ages, but it’s nice to finally have the numbers to back up the claim. By the time this posts, TTAG’s Facebook page will officially have more “likes” than Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the self-proclaimed “grassroots movement” that 90% of people supposedly agree with. The funny part is that MDA regularly claims that people who like their Facebook page are actually members of their organization, thus padding their otherwise pathetically puny numbers for the mainstream media. The question is, now that we’re officially more popular, can we claim that we’re a grassroots gun rights organization with more members than Moms Demand Action? That probably won’t get a lot of MSM play, but I bet it’d bug the crap out of Shannon.

  1. at least they can’t add an errant zero to the number of folks that “like” their page… just sayin…

    • Sure they can. A google search will turn up plenty of like-selling websites, and I’m pretty sure Bloomers can afford the going rate.

  2. I didn’t realize we were all in high school and treating this like a popularity contest….

    • For those of us who are still in high school, be aware that a major part of this fight is in the realm of PR – i.e., a popularity contest. Unless you believe that politicians base their votes on purely ethical and legal considerations.

    • Here’s the thing about the internet: popularity DOES count. Real advertising dollars are spent based upon web traffic. That’s exactly why so many Twitter and Facebook accounts have their followeres and likes artificially inflated.

  3. LOL I think some of that 50m needs to be redistributed in order to buy some likes

  4. Who said you can’t have fun with this? I don’t go to Facebook for anything, but I am an old codger. But I congratulate you Nick and TTAG! You are sure a heck of alot more popular than any Shannon we know or don’t know in our family! Tweek her Leghorn!

  5. But! But! Gun bullies! You’re wrong because shut up!

The petty side of me is getting some satisfaction out this. I know it’s wrong and I should be above all this, but it’s been a long week and I’m heading into a long Friday.

  6. Careful. We saw yesterday how this “Facebook Rivals” thing can play out.

Any pics of Everytown folk cramping with rickets or, as they say in the ‘hood’, flashing sign?

  7. Dumb question: What happened to last night’s article about the MN House passed legislation to confiscate guns from people accused of domestic violence?

It’s still returned on search list but gives a 404 …

    • The article had some serious factual errors. We’re having an expert re-write it to go along with a retraction.

  8. Take that MDA! It just proves what we already knew: We have the truth on our side. Can’t stop this train!

  9. I would bet good money that a lot of the “likes” that MAIG, MDA, etc have are purchased. Judging by the turnout they get at their rallies and protests, they claim 1000, actually get 25, why would their FB likes be any different.

I work at a gunshop in an upscale town (Los Gatos) and we have essentially the same bull to deal with. The woman claims that half the town is opposed to a gunshop, but yet can only seem to rally 10-15 people that will actually stand with her. And when they come to “protest” outside the store, there for 10 minutes, then it gets to hot, and off to Starbucks they go.

    • Really speaks to the nature of the Mommies, doesn’t it?

Yet everyone here still thinks I’m a nut for pointing it out 😀

      haha the Truth hurts.

    • Next time they picket I’d go out there and offer them a deal…..

My employees and I will sit in a room for 2 hours and listen to all your anti-gun propaganda in exchange for letting me take you to an open range for 2 hours and I’ll let you shoot some guns.

Or maybe better yet just start offering the free invitation and there will be someone that bites. Once you get that 1st person than i’d wager that a good half would take the offer. Poof goes the protest.

  10. Hmmm….a membership to TTAG? I’d buy a magazine sub/membership, especially if it was considered a gunrights org.

  11. Woo hoo! Here in the internet version of junior high school, we have won the popularity contest. At least for a day.

Congrats to everyone immature enough to consider such things relevant.

    • The importance of this has been explained so many times it boggles my mind you continue to berate it.

THIS is where the culture war is being fought. Like it or not…people use facebook and make value judgments based on ‘likes.’

And…MDA HAS used “likes” to validate their legitimacy AND their position on gun control. We ignore this stuff at OUR peril, whether we think in the grand scheme of life it’s all that important or not.

      • The dubious nature of Facebook “likes” and Twitter “followers” has been explained so many times it boggles my mind you continue to consider it useful.

These are fabricated statistics purchased like a commodity on the open market. People like Bloomberg buy facebook likes the same way we buy ammunition. It’s part of the cost of doing business when money is the only thing you have to establish any sort of credibility.

A couple years ago, “likes” and “followers” earned respect. Today, we know better. And the only people who brag about such nonsense are those who have little else on which to build a true “grassroots” movement. People like Bloomberg.

  12. I am in the habit of “like”ing or “follow”ing the Facebook pages of groups with whom I disagree (not just about civil rights), as a means of keeping an eye on them. As a side effect, Shannon gets to count me among her members.

As soon as I comment, I’m usually blocked from further commenting (usually they delete my comment), or occasionally kicked off the friend/fan list and banned from re-joining. But if they kick me off they don’t get to count me as a fan.

I wonder how many of her “fans” are actually good guys, just there for surveillance, who have managed to restrain themselves from commenting?

    • That’s a crucial point. If you want to get updates from a page, you have to like it. I’m pretty sure a good chunk of their numbers are from people who only want to monitor what’s going on over there. I can’t imagine the opposite side does the same, because they wouldn’t want to get notifications of gun reviews, gear reviews, etc. up the ying yang. The ‘likes’ differential may be greater than it appears. Not that it matters. But if you don’t mind, can you tell Jenny I like her when you see her in study hall? And I’m talking LIKE like.

  13. Ok I am tickled pink. Really.
I mean for a group like MDA which exists almost entirely within social media, this makes me snicker.
Also most if not all of our Everytown for Gun Safety Pages are still up. So that gives me a sense of satisfaction too. Both Tom Ridge, and Mark Glaze, top guys at Everytown split within the first week. Well this just seems to be getting better and better.
The Monsanto mommy continues to act the accidental activist, yet it is becoming more and more apparent to everyone, that this is just not the case. Armed guards, catered lunches, nice black SUV’s for travel. The attempt to act grass roots is lost on the glossy face being put forth.

      • There’s this thing called the “Internet” which is used by millions of the younger generations, say those 25 and under, to get virtually all of their information. They learn about fashion trends, what music is “in,” what other kids are doing for fun (or to harm themselves), etc.

Those younger folks don’t really watch the news or read paper mags. The communicate (often to the degree of having health issues) via ‘Net based connections such as SMS Text Messaging and ‘club’ sites like Facebook.

We may not like it, but not liking it will not change it (in the short term, anyway). If our political enemies leverage this medium to reach that audience…a VERY important audience for the future of our nation…we must as well.

As distasteful and foreign as it may be to some of us curmudgeonly old fogies, this is the hand we’ve been dealt. We MUST have our message out on these media and in ways that reaches them.

MDA advertises and sells the legitimacy of their ideology based on things like facebook “likes.” We cannot ignore this if we want to battle them.

They have deep pockets; we have the truth. Really – our biggest weapon is “truth,” but that takes getting the word to them that need hear it.

  14. It’s just 25 & under JR. My wife has a fairly big decorating blog Thousands of followers, 1.7 million page views. More & more she & her friends don’t bother blogging because there is way more work involved. Post on Facebook-3 times more comments, buy & sell, a third of the time & effort. Meant to type it’s NOT JUST 25. Anyway congrats TTAG!

  15. Привет всем, есть вопрос, попался сайт asyavolkova.com asyavolkova.com, не могу разобраться как тут обрабатывают фото?, какой тут плагин используют? Заранее спасибо.

  16. Is this about penis/breast size? Or is it about getting safe, sane, sensible gun legislation in this country?

The first rule of confrontation is divide and conquer; don’t be divisive!
