“Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (R) wants to be able to carry a gun in her purse,” huffingtonpost.com reports. As Ellen Foley famously sang to Michael Lee Aday, STOP RIGHT THERE! Purse carry is a terrible idea for anyone considering armed self-defense. You can lose your gun and, slightly more importantly, your life. Have you ever watched a woman try to extract a bit of lippy from her purse from inside her handbag? Now try that with a bad guy coming at you with a pig sticker, baseball bat or tire iron. Or, for that matter, a gun. “Fallin, who owns handguns, has applied for a concealed carry permit so that she does not have to leave her gun behind at the governor’s mansion.” Wait. Won’t her shotgun and AR get jealous? You never take us anywhere. “Fallin, who has an armed security detail, explained that she wanted to carry the gun with her for safety.” Because when seconds count, half-seconds count too. Just sayin’ . . .

  1. I respect the fact she’s going through the same process regular people have to go through, instead of just saying “I’m the governor, I can carry if I like.”

  2. Seems bad guys wont want to mess with her than theses east cost anti-gun East Coast wussies. Seems she fight back they surrender w/o a fight.

  3. Unlike Illinois’ Oligarchy who use an old statue from the 19th century to say that they are “Peace Officers” and therefore get to carry handguns while the rest of the peasants do not.

  4. It’s a bit presumptuous to assume that just because some women have disorganized purses that all women do, or especially that someone who intends to carry a pistol won’t take reasonable steps to ensure that it is available and functional.

It is not a bad idea to carry a weapon in one’s purse. It’s not good if it gets left out of arm’s reach, but someone who is at the level of governor surely has the intelligence and sense of responsibility to be careful about such things, because it doesn’t take much smarts and it only takes a consistency of seriousness.

If I can train 18 year old men to keep track of their rifle at all times, I think it’s certainly within the capability of the governor to keep track of her pistol.

    • Brilliant reply.

And, as noted above, rule #1 of surviving a gunfight: bring a gun. If your best carry option is a purse, then by all means carry in your purse, as long as you DO carry consistently.

  5. She should be able to purse carry. She shouldn’t have much trouble extracting from her purse (has the time), her armed security delaying the bad guy should do the trick!

But in that outfit I think thigh carry would be more fun.

  6. Cougar! Considering the bozo the clown caliber of presidents we’ve had the past 20 years (it must be bad national karma) I would much prefer to look at Mary than Hillary. Besides, you gotta love chics with guns.

  7. my uncle roger always carries a pistol in his purse when he dresses up as Blanche. it’s dangerous out there you know, and it’s hard not to print when wearing a black mini.

  8. Purse carry is much superior to no carry.

Besides, considering the size of many purses, stashing a 7-inch .44 Redhawk would be no problem- ask my wife.

  9. I haven’t agreed with every decision made by Gov. Fallin but I appreciate her vocal support of the Second Amendment and her actions support her claims, unlike our previous governor who vetod a number of good bills.

  10. I wish more politicians would speak up and say me too for our side,

Off topic: just got back from wally world aka china mart in mid michigan, they are almost out of shotgun ammo too, the only thing left in stock was .17HMR, .38 sp pdx1, 7mm, .270, and 30-06

  11. She signed the open carry bill and supported unlicensed open carry, so I trust her instinctively. If a pol doesn’t recognize your right to openly carry they don’t support the 2nd amendment. It’s actually a good litmus test whether you OC or not.

  12. MSM: “Governor Fallin, why would you want to have a
firearm? As a woman, shouldn’t you simply give up and
let yourself be assaulted, raped, or killed? As governor
shouldn’t you set the example for women everywhere
that violence isn’t the answer? Do you consider it morally
reprehensible that you might injure someone in order
to protect yourself or someone else?”

  13. As I said on another thread: People of the HSLD persuasion need to stop thinking that theirs is the only way.

I’ve known women who were ferocious RKBA advocates back in the 80’s and early 90’s, when things were really getting western in the Los Angeles area (for those of you too young to remember this period of history, go back in the FBI UCR’s and look up how many stiffs were piling up in the LA area as a result of shootings), and these gals would go jogging with a .22LR derringer carried old-school style: In their cleavage, held there by their sports bra.

You HSLD guys are going to laugh at that one. But here’s the thing: You HSLD commandos would have been spotted in 0.001 seconds in LA on a hot day with your gun rigs. You’d either have been wearing too much clothing for the temperature or you’d have printed through whatever you were wearing. People were quite used to looking for the guy with the heater in those days, because of the number of gang-bangers just waltzing around and ventilating their rivals in plain daylight.

Was these ladies’ method ideal? No. Was the type of gun ideal? Heck no. But whereas you HSLD guys would have been carrying without a permit (because there were no CCW permits issued in LA County unless you were rich, famous or politically connected) and spotted very quickly, none of these gals were ever hassled by cops for carrying. Their little derringers were never spotted.

From outward observation, no one knew they were carrying but me, and then only because I took these gals on shooting dates and was amazed at what they pulled out from some rather unlikely carry/concealment positions.

  14. hopefully she’ll be like many others who can carry but will never have to use. it’s not like any of us hope situations like these arise so that you can actually use the gun.

  15. Now about the purse carry, did the Gov specifically say purse carry or is the Huffpost just deciding that for her?

  16. Flashbang bra holster (and its cousins). Though for that outfit I’d go with a thigh holster. Look up some of the videos on women’s concealed carry on YouTube. Women can pack in outfits you’d think had little room for anything underneath.

  17. I am tired of people saying purse carry is a bad idea. Can anyone sight a story of a Female Conceal Carry having her gun stolen or taken away?? Bottom line is having a gun within your reach is far better then not having one. Anyone try to draw while wearing your seat-belt in the car??? I wish I had a man purse so I could get to my gun more quickly in the car.

Also take a look at that picture and let me know where the Governor should keep a pistol???
