Unfortunately, I think Tyler bagged the bigger animal in this case. Both of us were using lead free Barnes copper bullets, and even managed to recover one. Stay tuned for the whole rundown tomorrow.
Ruger m77 mark II in .243 WIN shooting 80 gr Barnes ttsx for me.
Nick used his .300 BLK -110 gr. Barnes
Somehow I knew Nick would have 300 BLK.
That Ruger is sweet though, I’m a sucker for Bolt Actions~
There was an article a few days ago about it, cant find the link atm. I know Nick’s got the .300 blk and I remember the other guy talking about more traditional hunting cartridges like .243 and .270, dont quote me ha.
NIce job guys! Now the real work begins.
Good stuff, kind of hating a little at the moment as I didnt get to hunt this weekend. Going to the range to get a good zero with new AR deer ammo – .69 grain HPBT. Love to get a .300 upper at some point for pig and maybe some deer, who knows 😀
Now comes the best part, skinnin grizz. Havalon Piranta is all I use these days.
NICK! Buy some hunting clothes! Don’t shave when you’re hunting, and maybe get a little dirty too. For men, hunting is a RUGGED MAN’s sport – You don’t hunt in golfing attire.
I know. Women hunt too, but even women try to look a little manly and outdoorsy when they are hunting.
Nice bucks, though.
When rifle hunting, any clothes will do. Bow hunting is another story.
Yes, but that doesn’t mean any clothes are appropriate, If you’re going to HUNT, you should dress like a hunter. Looking like and acting like a hunter is part of the fun of hunting.
Am I right, guys? Ask Tyler. It’s obvious that he gets what I’m saying.
Yeah put on all kinds of cammo and then put a BRIGHT orange vest and BRIGHT orange hat that is required.
tacticool nerd alert…
When hunting you should wear a plaid shirt or jacket, maybe a suit with a tie (if you are too posh for “common” clothes). And dont forget the golf cap.
What exactly is dressing “like a hunter”? Does that mean I should wear wool pants, a plaid flannel coat, and an uncle Buck-style ear-flap hat?
Maybe that look is a little dated? Man now I’m worried I don’t look like a hunter when I go hunting!
Don’t be hating guys. They’re an adorable couple. Nicks just not as butch as Tyler.
Shhh..
they ain’t out yet.
My bad, Nothing to see here folks, move along.
Both gentlemen appear to have well coordinated fashion and firearm. Both the Ruger and Tyler are wearing cammo… The AR and Nick are wearing matching upper and lowers. Anyone know where to find Cerakoted khakis and annodized or nitrided polos? Chrome lining optional.
This is officially my favorite comment.
In the great state of MO, we would call that one on the left a Button buck and the one on the right a Doe:)
That said thanks for keep the tradition alive and well!
And what about the deer? Do you have any special names for those out there too?
good job guys, much nicer antlers than my spike i shot with my bow last month but I only cared about getting some meat in the freezer.
Well done lads!
Mildly jealous here.
Lead free ammo? Testing CA’s laws for disfranchisement?
Shooting hog and coyote is fine, they’re ugly. But it’s this type of thing that made Bambi cry!
Bambi tastes better than hog or ‘yote.
I heard that somebody was working on a movie idea – it’s about this baby fawn deer whose Mom is killed by hunters, and when he grows up and gets antlers, he goes on a vicious violent vengeful rampage, antlering hunters to death all over the forest.
Will there be videos of you cleaning and butchering them?
In the other post they mentioned they would be doing a followup of last years field dressing video.
Is that a 40rd PMAG?
40 round mag seems a bit much for hunting, not for any ethical reasons but for weight and snagging on crap. I have a couple 20 round pmags that don’t stick out as much. Speaking of pmags, how are they working with 300BLK? I’ve heard they have some feeding issues with some bullets.
That was part of my point….
I actually used a 10 and 20 round magazine this weekend for the real “hunting” part, but I couldn’t resist slapping a 40 rounder in there for the obligatory picture.
I’ve had no issues whatsoever with 300 BLK in the standard PMAGs and even the 10 round PMAGs, they work fine for me. I’ve used them in old PMAGs, new PMAGs, and everything in between. But there are some mags that don’t work, stay tuned for a review next week.
you don’t get to 12s if you kill them when they are 6s and 8s
I was thinking the same thing! I would be embarrassed if I posed with a kill that small, unless I took him down by hand. Hunting with a 40 round pmag is bad enough on its own. Then to post a picture with it and a tiny buck? Sad.
Mine was a 4.5 year old based on his teeth. My processor and I agreed that he was probably on the downward decline and was at his peak this year.
Unfortunately, 10’s and 12’s are pretty rare around my ranch given their free range diet.
Now if I protein fed early in the year, I might see better antlers but the granola hippie inside of me likes the free range animal better.
Its worth a mention how much weight a buck can lose after a week or two of hard “Rutting”. And by the end of rut a buck can look absolutely pitiful!
If those bucks have been rutting… only sausage can save them now!
Was also going to comment on the poor husbandry choices with such young bucks. Also wtf on the giganto pmag….. Get out of the woods and write more video game reviews kiddo.
Honestly, I had a 10 round PMAG that I was using during the actual event. I just wanted to give Dianne Feinstein a conniption fit.
Lead-free copper bullets? In Texas?
What’s wrong with trying to avoid lead exposure?
Indeed. I’m considering lead free ammo on this deer hunt – 6.8 SSA TSX, .460 CorBon TSX, and .308 Tipped TSX. I still oppose lead bans, and have tons of lead ammo.
And these are the guys giving you self defense advise.
So they didn’t shoot trophy deer – but they are nice deer nonetheless. Hunting helps develop real world skills, helps to manage game, and supports the lawful use of firearms and the industries therein. What’s not to like about that?
I’ve been tempted to get a .300 BLK upper for deer. I’m surprised to find out there are no magazine capacity limits in Texas for hunting. Here in Oregon, you’re limited to five rounds in a rifle.
The dudes bagging on the size of the bucks are funny. Let’s see some pics of your big bucks. Besides as far as I know it’s pretty tough to eat antlers.
Here’s mine from last year. Rifle is a Ruger M77 in .270 WIN.
As a motorcyclist I thank you both!
So, I have to know.
What guns you using, and what caliber?

It’s called, “Bambo.”
The game came out a while ago.

Man, I sure hope I’m dressed “like a hunter”.
Nice buck, sir!
