If you’re in the market for a solidly-built AK/AR hybrid pistol chambered in 5.56 NATO? Palmetto State Armory’s JAKL pistol checks all the boxes for attention to detail and promises to be a fun shooter and maybe the perfect truck gun.

PSA designed the JAKL as an AK/AR hybrid with a 6061 monolithic upper receiver. The upper is compatible with AR-15 lowers and has a captured buffer, meaning it doesn’t extend beyond the receiver itself. That gives you a shorter, more portable platform which does a lot to enhance maneuverability and lets you use folding braces or stocks.

For an operating system, the PSA JAKL has a long-stroke gas piston with a Carpenter 158 bolt and 4340 carrier. It has a side-charging handle that’s fully ambidextrous and a toolless 4-position gas block. The JAKL is chambered in 5.56 NATO and ships with one 30-round PMAG.

Making the JAKL even easier to transport or store is a folding brace manufactured by SB Tactical. That means a shorter, but very reasonable length of pull, but it’s still good to go. Most of the JAKL’s weight is in the receiver, but it doesn’t seem to negatively impact overall balance.

Although it’s technically a hybrid design, the controls on the JAKL are mostly AR-style. (Photo credit: Kat Stevens)

The JAKL has been long promised and is finally in production. If you’re a fan of AK/AR hybrids, check it out.

  1. I glanced at the headline and thought their MP5 clone was FINALLY getting released… …Dammit!

    • “SmarterThenYou”

      Pro tip –

Someone announcing to the world of just how smart they are really shouldn’t make that pronouncement using mis-spelled words.

      “SmarterThenYou” ought to be “SmarterThanYou”.

      I accept your apology in advance… 😉

Yes on YouTube psa said they would start with 556 then 300 blackout and then maybe 9mm. They will eventually offer just the uppers in these same calibers too

        • What I’d really like to see is a variety of barrel lengths.. if they could offer a 300 BLK upper that was similar in size to the SIG rattler it’d be pretty fantastic.

  2. Planning on buying one of the 300BLK uppers once it’s available. I already have a piston 5.56 so I’m content to wait until then.

    • Shhhhhhhhh! Don’t tell them that, but yes indeed. I wasn’t a fan of the pencil barrels on the Arak, their uppers are also very hard to get a hold of. The price is less too here.

  3. Hope they don’t get sued for the logo. It’s awfully close to the logo used by the Italian company Dainese that makes protective clothing for racing, motorcycle stuff, etc.

    • Is there a short barrel, or pistol variant of the Mini?

For me the question is, why this over my PSA 10.5″ AR pistol? I’m sure this is better (piston and no buffer tube). On the other hand, my PSA is cheaper, already paid for, and already here.

  4. How about PSA getting their Com-Bloc ammo plant up and running?

    • Gone are the days of old. Picked up a few different AKs of theirs, 9mm lowers, and numerous other parts over the years. PSA quality has become amazing. For guns/parts not so great they are putting lifetime warranties on everything.

  5. Ruger Mini-14 in stainless steel with Butler Creek folding stock. It fits just fine under the rear jump seat of my Toyota Tacoma X-tra cab.

  6. “If you’re in the market for a solidly-built AK/AR hybrid pistol chambered in 5.56 NATO”

    No, no I’m not.

  7. Hybrid , is it Roundup ready?
You know the 5.56’s claim to fame is its speed. Them short barrels ain’t helping, might as well chamber a .22mag.

    • Have you looked at what $1,100 will buy you in today’s money? That’s like two nice baby seats and a pair of boots. If you hide the gun, maybe they’ll just take the boots and break your $1,500 window… In your $60,000 truck.

  8. It’s a bloody semi-automatic RIFLE for god’s sake no matter what you call it it uses NATO Rifle ammo for a start.
How is it any better than say a civilianised Colt AR of the same calibre? Is this one of them ”handguns” that the wannabe BIG GAME HUNTERS use for shooting semi-domesticated Big Game from prepared hides in Africa? Please explain the difference to this ignorant bugger from across the Pond. I just do not see the point of a 5.56 NATO pistol in the first place. o OVer $US1000 for a pice of unnessessary shite? God Save the US Arms Industry . Aren’t something in the order of 400,million guns circulating in CIVILISAN HANDS enough.

    • Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

    Because we can Serf.

  10. I want to see a comparison between this and Foxtrot Mike FM15 Gen 2. They have various barrel lengths available(11.5, 12.5,13.9,16) & adjustable 4 position gas block as well. Comes in a lower price point than JAKL and more availability at this time. They are working on an 8 or 9 inch 300BLk version too.

  11. Thank you PSA! For an updated 223/556 design. Never been a AR15 direct gas design fan. Now 16 inch barrel please! Regular folding stock. Thinking Bushmaster
ACR Design here. Or Polish MSBS.
You guys have brought a lot of new designs to the market over the years. I think you have another winner.
