"This June 27, 2013 mugshot from the Josephine County Sheriff's Office shows Jon Andrew Meyer, Jr., a transient, who was to be arraigned Friday on a charge of manslaughter in the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl in Grants Pass, Ore. Authorities say Meyer was visiting an apartment when an assault rifle went off in a downstairs room and hit the girl and a woman in an upstairs room of the same apartment. The woman was wounded. It’s been a while since we published one of these. To paraphrase Yoda, worth the wait it’s been (in a tragic horrible sort of way). “A 5-year-old girl has been killed and a woman wounded in Grants Pass after an assault rifle went off and shot them in an upstairs room of an apartment, police said.” I’m thinking a Christine remake only featuring a rifle. In fact, “A 30-year-old transient [ Jon Andrew Meyer, Jr, above] who was visiting the apartment was arraigned Friday on charges of manslaughter, assault and illegal possession of a machine gun, Chief Deputy District Attorney Lisa Turner said. The manslaughter charge alleges the killing was reckless, not intentional.” More than that . . .

say she will not. “Turner said she could not divulge the make and model of the rifle, who owned it, or whether it was manufactured as a fully automatic weapon or modified later.” Whoa! Full auto? Evil²! And here how down it went:

Police said Meyer was in a downstairs room of the apartment when the rifle went off there, and the girl and the woman were upstairs in the same apartment. The woman was not related to the girl, whose mother was also in the apartment, but not shot, Turner said.

Damn rifles!

  1. A 30 yo transient with an FA assualt rifle and the IQ of a hamster. And that is one well fed looking transient.

  2. This might really be a accidental though albeit also negligent discharge; If someone had been attempting a shade-tree full auto conversion the weapon may well have slam fired upon the bolt being lowered on a loaded chamber. Once started, this sort of ‘runaway gun’ continues to fire until its ammunition is exhausted or its action is jammed.

    • And in that case, the passive construction would likely be correct, since the dumbass in question didn’t actually “fire” the gun himself.

      Still really sad.

  3. . . . . or it could have been an AR with a Slide Fire stock and the DA doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

    • But a slide fire stops shooting when you stop pressing forward. I don’t think there’s any way you could get one to even negligent discharge with the trigger block.

  4. Yeah, he needs to look sad after killing a five year old. If it were my daughter he should probably be looking quite afraid after that act of stupidity.

No, he would probably have a very neutral look on his face. Permanently, with a touch of gray.

  5. can we say assault rifle ban, how many of these have to happen before enough is enough. sure its not happening to you YET. should the law change then ?

  6. Obviously we need to ban fully automatic weapons. Oh wait, we already did that for tha most part…

  7. Not only will they not say whose rifle it was, they also dance around the question of whose apartment it was. How was it a woman came to bring her 5 year-old around some unrelated transient as he handles an illegal machine gun? This just sounds really fishy.
