Gun Review: Smith and Wesson Model 64 (DAO)

42

“A Revolver? Really?” Yeah, I’ve heard that a time or two over the past years. Now I don’t hate automatic pistols. Really, I don’t. I own a very nice Glock that serves as my primary CCW weapon. But as I’ve said here before, an automatic pistol is a machine. A fine revolver, on the other hand, is a work of art.

Freedom of Speech Evidently Has No Place In a University.

112

Since Hector was a pup, Universities, Colleges, and institutions of higher learning have been heralded as the keepers of the eternal flames of knowledge, reason, and intellectual freedom. In recent years, they’ve also been a fertile breeding ground for “politically correct” speech – that euphemistically enriched dialect that is long on obfuscation and short on logic and reason. Now the same philosophy that made it illegal to think ill thoughts of someone (or at least add to your guilt if you acted upon them) brings you a page right out of 1984  and Brave New World – and right in the heart of academia.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong: Umbrella Squirt Gun Edition

4

From the fertile mind of Alex Wooley Graphic Design of the UK – no, really – comes the toy all the cool kids will be playing with this fall on the rainy streets of London. Right up until they’re taken down by British special forces, that is. This unique, funnel shaped umbrella harnesses the flow of rainwater down into its handle, a water pistol. The user can fire at will, maintaining a constant flow of water as long as rain continues to fall!

Make the jump for a shot of the wacky hijinks.

Gun Preview: Ruger SP101 .22LR Trigger Smooths Out

34

You may recall my initial kvetch about the Ruger SP101 .22LR: the trigger was heavier than Proust and stacked more than my local Wal-Mart. TTAG commentator Aharon made the obvious but important recommendation: dry fire the bitch! Roger that (so to speak). And so the .22 caliber revolver was in my hand for most of the next day—which made comfort breaks a bit awkward. Be that as it wasn’t, I must have dry fired the wheelgun a thousand times. Pulling the SP101’s trigger still feels like you’re doing so on Jupiter, but it’s a LOT better . . .

Gear Review: Homak Gun Safe

27

Black 12 gun cabinet safe w/ FREE SHIPPING!!!!

I clicked the Buy It Now button and then went over to PayPal and completed the transaction. stephens_st0re on eBay has several different models of the Homak safe at competitive prices (compared to other Homak’s for sale) and a 1381 star rating. This was Saturday. By Wednesday all I had was the auto-generated eBay email with no word at all from stephens_st0re. I was starting to get nervous. Come Friday, there it was on my front doorstep . . .

Question of the Day: What Does Shooting Teach Children?

32

Yesterday, I called the waambulance regarding my 13-year-old step-daughter’s desire for ever-increasing amounts of independence. After being upbraided by members of TTAG’s Armed Intelligentsia for police state-style parenting, I’d like to take that kids-safety-guns dialogue in a different direction. What does shooting teach children? It’s a moot point for my SD; she’s about as interested in firearms as she is in putting her plate into the dishwasher. And thanks to an upbringing so liberal my parents practically rolled my joints (i.e. anti-gun), I didn’t even know there was a ballistic boat to miss. Despite my experiential ignorance, I know that guns ‘n kids are a good mix (when supervised properly). For all those new shooters/breeders coming into the forearms fold, what are the three main lessons that shooting can teach their kids?

Duuude, Where’s My 4473?

The feds have never liked the fact that several states – sixteen plus DC and counting – have legalized marijuana use for medical purposes. All that locally legal glaucoma mitigation has been a burr under the DOJ’s saddle for long time and the chronic is still a schedule I controlled substance under federal law. Now, someone at the ATF has woken up long enough to issue a new policy regarding legally prescribed ganja and guns…

Gear Review: Timney AR 15 Trigger Take Two

16

Nick’s review of Timney Trigger left me in a Show Me state of mind. When it comes to product reviews, Mr. Leghorn is not often a five-star general. So I sent off for my very own Timney to see if their go pedal was all that it was cracked up to be. First things first. You can install this trigger. Yes you. The manufacturer’s instructions are extremely clear about what needs doing and in what order. That said, if you have never removed your handgrip, be very, very careful. There are some delicate springs and whatnot that control your safety selector. They can disappear quick, fast, and in a hurry. Two things will make your trigger replacement go easier . . .

Inebriation Foils Clever Toy Uzi Robbery Attempt

Can you get an Alka Seltzer in the Palm Bay, Florida jail when you need one? It seems like a safe bet that Wilnelia Caraballo needed one – big time – when she woke up Sunday morning with what had to be a mother of a hangover. Once she looked at her ink-stained fingers and the bars on the window and realized where she was, I’m sure one of the kind jailers explained why she was there…

Gun Review: Smith & Wesson Model 642

144

They only carry five rounds of .38 Spl +P ammunition and, at 15 ounces, they weigh about the same as some autoloaders that hold more rounds. At first blush, it might seem that Smith & Wesson’s little J-frame revolvers have outlived their usefulness. So the question is, are these diminutive hideout guns still relevant?

Russian Army [Not Shown] Rejects the AK-74

2

The Russian Defense Ministry has one word for the AK-74 assault rifle: outdated. The Ministry didn’t buy a single AK-74 this year—although that may have a little something to do with the fact that they’ve got several million of them smothered in Cosmoline in an Indiana Jone style warehouse somewhere. Not to worry, Izhmash fans. The storied Russian arms maker says a new version of the venerable AK is ready to replace the 1974 variant. Almost. But when it is, the new rifle will offer more accuracy. Longer range. And greater reliability. Wait. Isn’t it one of those good, fast or cheap choose any two deals? “We have some sample weapons at hand and hope that the military will like them,” Izhmash spokesman told Izvestia with characteristic humility. “In the meantime, we will focus on the export and production of sporting firearms.” [Note to the NSSF: in Russia, euphemisms own you!]
