Revision BATLSKIN: How to Win Friends and Influence People. Or Not.

Remember the Army ad where the viewer’s looking a hysterical black man ranting (in a foreign language) at the camera as if someone had just killed his entire family in an airstrike? The narrator asks how we’d deal with the aggravated African. A hand reaches up to the lens and pulls off sunglasses. The man calms the f down. It’s an excellent point: go native! A point that’s been completely lost on America’s fighting forces throughout the GWOT (Global War on Terror). If anything, our soldiers are looking less and less like the locals and more and more like the Predator. Revision continues the trend with BATLSKIN: “the world’s first fully integrated, fully modular head protection system.” Just add a firearm with an ACOG and there you have it: your friendly neighborhood global policeman. Good luck with that. [h/t to gunmartblog.com. Click here for the press release.]

Some Statistics about NICS (Background Checks for Firearms Ownership)

22

I was poking around the FBI’s website the other day and ran into a 2010 report about NICS (the National Instant Criminal Background Check System) checks, which is the background check that happens when you buy a gun from a gun shop and causes those 10 frustrating minutes after you’ve plunked down your dollars but before you can have the gun. Turns out they’ve done that exact same thing over 124 million times (124,427,448 as of December 31, 2010 to be exact) and have some interesting statistics to share.

Wilson Combat Bill Wilson Carry 1911 vs. Glock 30SF: Safety

34

Glocks are safe. Of course they are. If you keep your finger off the trigger, a Glock will not fire. Never. Not once. Ever. Adhering to that simple rule, you could carry a Glock in your hand all day long—from breakfast to lights out—and never experience a single dangerous moment. Save the one where the SWAT team finally catches up with you at the CVS pharmacy counter. 1911s are also safe. Same thing, right? A 1911’s trigger will fire with a fraction of the finger effort required to torch the primer of a cartridge in a Glock, but if you keep your finger off the trigger, the 1911 will be just as inert as a Glock. So it’s a tie. Only not at all . . .

FBI: Violent Crime Rate Dropped 6.5% in 2010 Compared to 2009

7

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, official scorekeeper for crime figures and statistics, released their official report on crime for 2010 this morning. According to their math geeks violent crime is continuing its statistical decline, dropping 6.5% compared to 2009. Readers are warned that correlation does not equal causation, so the decline in violent crime may not be due to the rapidly increasing ownership of firearms and ability to carry them, but it sure does look that way. Read on for some highlights from the report…

Pro Tip: Keep Your Head on a Swivel in One Shot Firearms

11

And you thought hanging around your friendly neighborhood gun store, shooting the bull about the latest and greatest wondergun, was a fun way to pass some time away from the ball and chain. And it definitely can be. But as we’ve mentioned before, not all gun stores are filled with sticklers for safe gun-handling procedures. Just because a guy’s behind the counter doesn’t mean he knows the four rules from a hole in the ground. Or one in your head. If lasering involved real lasers, the interior of some retailers would look like a fourth of July fireworks display. But that’s OK…all those heaters being waived around by customers – and sometimes sales staff, too – are safe, unloaded guns for sale, right? Well…

Question of the Day: How Often Do You Practice Shooting One-Handed?

11

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFAxCVAO68M

Wayne at the American Firearms School schooled me the other day. I was practicing unholstering the Wilson Combat Bill Wilson Carry. “Why are you switching off the safety when you get into your full stance?” he asked. Which was Wayne’s way of saying “Don’t be an effing idiot. Turn the safety off as soon as the gun comes out of the holster; you may have to shoot from the hip (as unaccustomed as I am to doing so in the editorial sense).” Luckily, he got to me early on in my transition from the Glock 30SF to the 1911. On the positive side, I always practice one-handed shooting (and not shooting) one-handed. Both weak and strong. Is one-handed shooting a standard part of your training routine? How about you self-defense rifle and shotgun guys? If so, does one-handed shooting effect your choice of weapon? [see: today’s post about 1911 safety].

New York Times: Supreme Court “Wrongheaded” On The Second Amendment

10

Three days ago, The New York Times pronounced that The Highest Court in the Nation™ “misread” the Second Amendment when they ruled that the right to keep and bear arms was an individual right. So the Florida legislature had no business enforcing a 1987 law prohibiting cities and counties from passing local gun control regulations. Today, All The News That Fits throw a hissy fit about the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011. “This trashing of state and local prerogatives is not only unwise but unnecessary. In its wrongheaded 2008 decision recognizing an individual’s Second Amendment right to keep guns in the home for self-defense, the Supreme Court still left room for reasonable gun limits, including restrictions on toting concealed weapons.” Well . . .

Dan Baum: The U.S. Firearms Industry is Doomed. Or Not.

82

Old time TTAGers will remember Dan Baum as the one-time New Yorker writer and TTAG commentator/contributor. Dan the Man was offended by the term “gun grabber” and other “inflammatory” editorial material hereabouts, took his ball and went home. Actually, he hit the road, researching for a new, firearms-related book. Dan recently broke radio silence to send me a heads-up—via batch email. For .99, I could download an excerpt of his forthcoming tome Guns Gone Wild. [Click here to download the Kindle single.] And here’s what I learned for my George Washington: the United States firearms industry is demographically doomed. When the OFWGs (Old Fat White Guys) die-off, that’s it. Done. In fact, it’s already happening . . .

Australian Island Gun Range Reveals The Future of Gun Control

19

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMqCuPaTm7U

Here’s a little holiday video from Hamilton Island off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It’s a perfect example of what happens when you put safety first, last and always—ahead of freedom and personal responsibility. [NB: the Powers That Be Down Under have banned handguns for personal defense. Target shooters are limited to handguns of .38 or 9mm calibre or less and magazines may hold a maximum of 10 rounds. The handgun used here is—gasp!—a .44 Magnum.]

Self-Defense Tip: Keep Your Friends Close, Your Gun Purchases Closer

27

Last week, I reported on a Massachusetts gun collector whose collection got collected by thieves. This despite the fact that Mr. Sokolowski had a gun vault that the police described as “extremely secure.” As Mr. Sokolowski was not held at gunpoint during the robbery, either the thieves were extremely sophisticated or it was an inside job. My money’s on the latter. Die-hard gun collectors are notorious for purchasing weapons outside established channels (e.g., gun stores and auction houses). Gun shows! Classified ads! Forums! Friend of a friend of a friend! That’s how you find a “real” bargain! Go to the source. Yes, well . . .

Should He Be Arrested Or Get A Commendation?

5

There’d probably be a lot less crime if store owners could rely on thieves to shoot each other during a robbery. That’s what happened at D&S Liquors in Colorado Springs Thursday. The proprietor noticed a yoot trying to lift a bottle of hooch and locked the front door so the little scumbag couldn’t get away. That’s when the gunfire broke out…
