Ohio “Vigilantes” Assault Undercover Cop. What Are the Odds?

13

“Officers said the incident began at the Chateau Club in Harrison Township [Ohio],” whiotv.com reports. “According to police, the two men followed the officer southbound on Interstate 75, came up behind him near Stanley Avenue and began bumping his personal vehicle, forcing him into the guardrail. Police said the men then pulled over on the exit ramp to Route 4. Sgt. Clarence West said, ‘The gentlemen said they apprehended the person who just robbed them at the Chateau Club that is in the county at Wagner Ford Road.’ Officers said they believe that part of the men’s story is true and that someone did approach them in the parking lot and rob them at gunpoint. However, police said they believe the two men became confused about which car held the robbery suspects. Police said this is one of the reasons why they advise people not to take matters into their hands. Cases of mistaken identity are pretty common.”

“The World Looks Different When You’re Looking at it Down the Barrel of a Loaded Gun”

That’s definitely not something I want to experience, but I’ll certainly take Robert Eells’ word for it. Eells survived a bullet to the gut, drew his legally concealed gun, returned fire and repelled three street scum who were trying to rob him. Chalk up another one for the good guys. The Temple University student was just fortunate he wasn’t walking the two blocks to campus when he was attacked…

ATF Death Watch 72: Gunwalker Becomes Bombwalker

4

The steady drip of damning information about the Gunwalker scandal has become a raging torrent. Yesterday, we learned that the ATF instructed at least one Indiana gun store to allow criminals to illegally purchase weapons, which later turned up at crime scenes. TTAG’s trying to establish who did what with which guns where. If these ATF-enabled guns didn’t go to Mexico, if Mexican drug thugs or their allies used them on U.S. soil, it pulls the rug from under the ATF’s patently ridiculous rationale for Operation Fast and Furious (a botched attempt to catch cartel members). It also leaves us wondering where else Gunwalker guns were sold. Boston? Philadelphia? Atlanta? How many ATF-enabled guns are out there? Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal‘s revealed that the ATF was also enabling grenades. Thousands of them . . .

Brady Campaign vs. The Real World

11

You have to hand it to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. They sure know how to make a media splash, don’t they? Most organizations – such as the federal government – use the days just before before a three-day holiday weekend to announce something they’d rather draw as little attention to as possible. Something embarassing. Something they want to slip under the radar as much as possible while people are busy doing other things. Which makes you wonder why they chose to make their announcement that US gun manufacturers have ‘lost’ more than 16,000 guns since 2009 right before the Labor Day weekend…

NYC Mayor Bloomberg, Gun Control Advocates. Out of Ideas?

12

Now that Brady Campaign Prez Paul Helmke’s retired, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is the undisputed heavyweight king of America’s gun control movement. His is an empty kingdom. In June 2008, the Supreme Court struck down D.C.’s handgun ban. Two years later, they kiboshed Chicago’s ban. As legal hurdles to gun ownership and concealed carry continue to fall, sales are surging. Meanwhile, anti-gun initiatives—from high cap mag bans to micro-stamping—are dead in the water. By now, you can attribute gun control’s public support to little more than knee-jerk liberalism. Bloomberg, the head of the moribund Mayors Against Illegal Guns, has nowhere to go on the gun control issue and, increasingly, nothing to say. Even the media has grown weary of his bleating. To wit this, from nydailynews.com:

Free Targets Use Circular Logic

Financially, being a college student sucks. Not only is no one paying me, I have to pay other people. My bank balance has forced me to be frugal, like switching to 9mm ammo for range sessions (instead of my beloved .45). When former Magpul Dynamics instructor Travis Haley introduced a number of drills on his company’s blog, they got my attention. The drills are based on o8 ½ x 11 paper targets that you can download and print. I’ve been using them in the last few weeks. They’re wholly satisfying; way better than shooting paper plates. And now I can eat like a civilized human being. Can anyone point me to similar training freebies?

We’re Going On a Bear Hunt. We’re Going to Catch A Big One. And Gut Him Like a Fish

“The [400 pound] bear was shot by a slender young lady friend of mine from east Texas,” Jim Green of downeastgunworks.com writes. “She worked really hard for this bear and has been after him for about 3 years now. She got him this morning at first light. The bullet struck the bruin in the flank on a quartering away shot. He dropped from a single shot, but it did pulverize his insides a bit . . .

Book Review: Left Turn

21

Media Bias.

What if you had the power to change history? What if you could influence the future? How ’bout an election or two? Let’s assume that’s possible for the nonce. Would you use that power for good or evil? Would having the power corrupt you, sooner, later, or eventually? And here’s the kicker – would you know if you had it, and if you knew, would it make any difference in your behavior? That’s a lot of what ifs. But that’s the price you pay for reading a book that can turn conventional wisdom on its ear, as does Left Turn, a book by the Marvin Hoffenberg Professor of American Politics at UCLA, Professor Tim Groseclose. But the more interesting question the book raises, is how does this affect the fight over our 2nd Amendment rights?

Quote of the Day: Stone Temple Pilot Edition

“I knew he was trying to kill me when he was smashing my head into the concrete.” It seems Vanessa Mascolin was able to tell the difference between a “shoot” and “don’t shoot” scenario without too much trouble. “She said that [Robby] Gilmore was trying to collect rent money from her, but she had already made arrangements with the landlord,” kesq.com reports. “On Saturday night the argument escalated, when he was chasing her around the pool area, then he hit Mascolino in the head and punched her in the face and broke her hand. ‘I was kicking to try and get him of from me, he kept pulling and punching my head then I shot him in self-defence,’ said Mascolino.” I mention all this not because Mascolin forgot to STFU after a DGU but because . . .

Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day: Lantana, FL C-Store Owner

Working at a convenience store is no picnic. You make about as much as fast food, but with a lot more potential for staring down the barrel of a gun. Particularly working the lonely night shift. It’s not exactly Anbar provence, but there probably aren’t many civilian jobs that carry more risk of being robbed and very possibly shot. And while you probably know that when you take the gig, what you most likely don’t expect is getting shot by your boss…
