Question of the Day: Condition 3 Carry?

99

Arguments for Condition 3 carry (full magazine, nothing in the chamber):

1. Safer for children (more difficult for them to rack the slide and chamber a round).
2. Helps prevent negligent discharges by adding another task before firing
3. Helps prevent negligent discharges by reducing administrative handling during loading/unloading (you don’t have to chase the ejected round when unloading)
4. Lowers your chances of being shot by your own gun if a bad guy takes control of your weapon in a fight.

Arguments against Condition 3 carry . . .

Gun Review: Taurus 651.357 Magnum Revolver in Stainless Steel

37

Hi Robert,

I haven’t forgotten about writing something for TTAG. I planned (I did mean past tense here…) on a review of the Taurus 651 stainless 5-shot .357. I started to outline what I wanted to do; it was going to be a review on a cheap and cheerful revolver. Something along those lines, with a smattering of snark for all the Taurus haters out there. It would be a positive review and an honest read. I think I’ve said before: I owned one of these little revolvers several years ago. It was one of the first guns I ever bought and it served me well. They aren’t bad little guns—especially for the price (MSRP $480). And then I went and actually bought the damn thing . . .

The Campaign for Real Music in Shooting Videos

29

What IS it with shooting videos and crap music? It’s either generic death thrash chain speed rottweiler metal or synthdiscoelvatorsomamuzak. I know! Let’s ask YouTube! “If you use an audio track of a sound recording owned by a record label without that record label’s permission, your video may be infringing the copyrights of others, and may be subject to removal.” Make that WILL be subject to algorithmic exorcism, and a stern warning. Automatically. Of course. Also of course: “YouTube offers a library of authorized music to liven up your video. Try AudioSwap now!” Or as the above example indicates, not. Until and unless licensing becomes cheap, we’re stuck with gun porn with 70’s porn music. Sigh. My first AudioSwap attempt after the jump.

Question of the Day: Has Anyone Ever Shot at You? For Real?

15

Trent Kimball doesn’t just stand behind his product. He stands behind his product as his employees shoot at him. He can do that because his product is bullet proof glass, among other bits of auto armor. The last twenty seconds of the above video gives you an idea what he sees as someone who works for him aims an AK and sends a 7.62 round his way. And check out yesterday’s item by RF for other scary views. (Sure hope last year’s Christmas bonuses were what everyone expected!) Two-inch thick glass or not, the idea of Texas Armoring’s version of the boss climbing into the dunking booth gives me the willies. I might have to suit up with a pair of tactical Depends if it were me looking into that barrel. Just to be sure, of course. How ’bout you? Anyone ever take a shot at you? Ever shoot at someone else (short of combat, of course)? Give us your after-action report.

Self-Defense Tip: This is The Back Up Gun You’re Looking For

18

Over at usacarry.com, commentator and CCW license holder Terminal Lance called his local po-po about the legalities of shooting a dog. The constable told Lance that the canine eliminator would face the same investigation “as if it were a person you shot.” The castle doctrine’s “no duty to retreat” caveat wouldn’t apply “because the dog has no way of knowing what it is doing is wrong.” Huh? The cop also said Lance should “expect a GIANT pain in the ass if this happens.” Two words for those who expect to encounter bad dogs: Kimber Pepperblaster (or similar). While I’m still contemplating the benefits of carrying pepper spray for two-legged aggressors, this super-slim Kimber is the best way to defend yourself against wolf descendants without the danger, expense and hassle of a ballistic solution.

Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day: Marshall County (WV) Sheriff’s Department

20

Previously, on Who Wants to Wear Flame-Proof Trousers, TTAG received major heat for naming the Lino Lakes police department our Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day. Seems we failed to consider the possibility that a handgun caliber bullet could ricochet backwards from a recently cleared firing range and pierce the epidermis of an officer on the line. Who knew? But some things are entirely predictable and completely irresponsible. Like what happens when a police department lets officers repair firearms in the comfort of their own home. Unsupervised. Late at night. Without specific guidelines. The Intelligencer/Wheeling News Register reports . . .

Dude, Where’s My AK-47?

I’ll go out on a limb here and assume you’re aware that the economy’s not so hot. And that the likelihood of college grads snagging full-time employment that doesn’t require wearing a paper hat is pretty slim. One tried and true way for undergrads to improve their chances of getting hired after they’re handed a diploma is a summer internship. Sure, you probably won’t be paid, but at least you’re getting some real world experience, right? Chris Jeon, being the proactive type he is, decided to create his own internship fighting with Libyan rebels as his summer vacay wound down…

I’d Buy That for a Dollar! $26.43? Not So Much.

Bud’s Gun Shop is now offering silver coins of its own design, complete with the FFL’s url and a trademarked anti-abortion exhortation. Although the non-governmental coins don’t have any “face value” (despite the markings), at least they’re minty fresh. “Every 2011 Peacemaker Gun Dollar has been minted in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and contains one half Troy ounce of pure .999 fine silver with a $25 MSRP, measures 32mm and is minted with high relief to exemplify the high ideals of the Second Amendment.” I haven’t experienced high relief in decades. And what’s with the price? Our headline says $26.43. “The rates for the Second Amendment Dollar are based on the price of silver that is constantly changing. In order to provide you with the best possible prices the silver price is automatically updated every 20 minutes while the global silver market is open.” It’s closed now. You’re good to go.

If The New, Shiny Still Not Happy Black Panthers want to teach their adherents’ children how to kill white people armed self-defense, sorry, the First Amendment comes first. Oh sure, there’s probably some Patriot Act-related law/regulation/super secret caveat that makes this instruction a crime against national security punishable by internment in Cuba without the right to legal redress. That doesn’t apply to minorities. (If a white instructor told white kids “Now, it’s your choice, you may finish off your load or you may go about your business” [4:22], the legacy media would be apoplectic.) Quite apart from all that, what do you think of the Field Marshall’s tactics? [Click here for his machete-based self-defense instruction.]

Don’t Want to be Shot in Chicago? You Probably Don’t Have to Worry. Much.

12

The city of Chicago has done everything it legally can (not to mention some that have been found illegal) to avoid having a shooting range built within city limits. But judging by general state of marksmanship there, the Windy City fathers would do well to make sure a range or six is erected soon. Some practice would almost surely save a lot of lives. Case in point…
