The current President of the United States posted the following on his Facebook page re: his new “smart gun initiative”:

I want to update you on some important progress we’ve made to protect our communities from gun violence. As I said in January, these commonsense steps are not going to prevent every tragedy, but what if they prevented even one? We should be doing everything we can to save lives and spare families the pain and unimaginable loss too many Americans have endured. First, we’ve jumpstarted the development of smart gun technology . . .

Today, many gun injuries and deaths are the result of legal guns that were stolen, misused, or discharged accidentally. As long as we’ve got the technology to prevent a criminal from stealing and using your smartphone, then we should be able to prevent the wrong person from pulling a trigger on a gun. So, my Administration released a plan today to expedite the development of smart gun technology, including by identifying the requirements that smart guns would have to meet in order for law enforcement to purchase and use them effectively – and keep themselves and the public safer in the process.

Second, we’re doing more to make sure that those who are already prohibited from obtaining a firearm can’t get their hands on one. Today, we’re announcing a rule to ensure that federal mental health records about individuals prohibited from buying a gun are reported to the background check system.

Third, the White House will convene state and local elected officials from all 50 states in May to discuss their efforts to prevent gun violence through legislative and executive actions. The goal is to figure out what works on the ground when it comes to keeping our communities safe, and then share those practices.

As long as I’m your president, I will do everything in my power to make our communities safer and keep guns out of the wrong hands. That includes calling on Congress to pass the kinds of commonsense reforms supported by the vast majority of the American people.

Making progress on these issues is how we honor the lives that have been lost by gun violence, and it’s how we leave behind a stronger, more secure nation for our children.

    • He did say that he wants to research technology that would make smart guns viable for police, which to me would mean just as reliable as modern guns.
Now I’m 100% against government spending any money on something not expressly listed in the Constitution, like scientific research, but if the technology did exist, I’d be all in favor of government agencies buying them instead of traditional guns. And as long as there’s no remote disable capability (which would make them unviable for police, and therefore not meet the criteria), I’d even consider one of my own.

      • By definition though, a gun controlled by electronics has a remote disable built in. Kids (and adults) are already making microwave guns and low powered EMP pulse guns on youtube. It wouldn’t take long for the criminally minded, and just curious hacker minded types who want to find the fail, to figure out how to disable these, first from up close, and then from a distance, and in some cases, depending on the tech used, hack and disable, or enable as the case may be. They can be hardened against EMP/Microwaves, but there’s a long way to go there. There haven’t even been any truly successful, marketable, reliable handgun models that shoot more than a few rounds without jamming as far as I’ve been able to follow, although I did see some long guns that seemed to work normally, other than needing a ring to activate the trigger mechanism, certainly not hardened against EMP/Microwave or electronic attack. Long way to go, years of R&D & testing. It’ll be shut down in a few months is my best bet. A dog & pony show and a waste of tax payer funds.

        • This smart gun business is all horseshit. When it gets down to it, there is a round in a chamber and a mechanical system that pushes a firing pin into a primer. a gun can have all the smart technology in the world, but give it anyone with a small amount of mechanical aptitude, and the firing pin can be made to stroke the primer. Thus defeating the whole, supposed, idea.

  1. Making progress on these issues is how we honor the lives that have been lost by gun violence, and it’s how we leave behind a stronger, more secure nation for our children.

Translation – The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

  2. STFU, Barry.

Nobody wants to hear you crowing anymore and everything you say is a lie, anyway.

  3. As long as we have Technology to prevent your stolen smartphone from being used…

Let me help: we don’t have that technology. Best we can do is ERASE said smartphone so their usage doesn’t get your Data.

    • Dittos

“spare families the pain and unimaginable loss”

There are millions of families feeling the pain caused by this twit.

“unimaginable loss”? There was no death before he observed such? Useless jackwagon.

  4. Since the real danger to most people comparatively, is the automobile, smart cars and their deployment is far more critical to the nation’s populace.

But the news doesn’t get a bloody t-shirt to wave every time there’s a head-on into a bridge abutment.

  5. He compares guns to smart phones… That have all their data mined, and tracked by big fed brother… What could go wrong? I guess the next ak I build will need some part added to it made by nokia or some such company. Yes because I’m sure everybody would follow that law. I love the Orwellian phrasing of the term “smart gun” which implies that anything besides a “smart gun” is a dumb gun. You wouldn’t want to own one of those dumb guns would you dumb bum?

  6. Getting rid of the first amendment would be worth it if it saved just one life… Freedom is speech makes others angry when they hear something they disagree with and may resort to violence to disagree. Freedom of religion allows for points of difference and after thousands of years of religious conflict people around be safer if they all followed one religion.
Getting rid of the second amendment means you’d have to beat someone to death with your fists out feet surely this sound save some lives.
Get rid of the third amendment and quarter troops in every house in high crime areas and surely you could save at least one life.
Get rid of the fourth and you can search search people and houses whenever you want this dabbing people from certain death.
Get rid of the fifth and you can lock up more criminals by forcing them to incriminate themselves this saving more lives.

Ah hell just get rid of that entire damn bill of rights and everyone will be so much safer.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. – Benjamin Franklin.

Perhaps your president should consider these words from the first American before more shit dribbles out from between his lips…

    • Lesson learned: Never post comments from a phone without repeatedly checking the entire thing for errors or else you end up sounding as incoherent as your president.

      • You aren’t the only one with phone-wrwngling challenges. No problem. Arry on, as I was told.

        Carrying on…

So, given that “we” should do “evrything we can” to prevent only one death, spare only one family… how many cops, feds, soldiers and their families are “we” willing to sacrifice to mnock that number down by one?

I realize that any number of peaceful, responsible gun owners can be sacrificed; any number of would-be empowered women raped, to reduce deaths by gang-banging “friendly fire” by any amount.

It’s like some animals are more equal than others. Once you get that, it all makes sense.

    • That would require him to be a student of history or a proponent of liberty. He is neither!

  7. “So, my Administration released a plan today to expedite the development of smart gun technology, including by identifying the requirements that smart guns would have to meet in order for law enforcement to purchase and use them effectively … Third, the White House will convene state and local elected officials from all 50 states in May to discuss their efforts to prevent gun violence through legislative and executive actions.”

The hidden agenda here is to force gunmakers to develop the “smart gun” technology (even though no Federal agent would be willing to carry one), thus providing leftist states like NJ, NY, CT and CA the opportunity to pass laws requiring all guns sold and owned in those states to use this technology. Hey, if we can just track all the gun owners in America we can easily round them up later!

  8. Yep, more $$$$$$ for development of ‘guns’ which will never be adopted by police or federal agents. But hey, now that we’ve spent all this money developing these things, we might as well not have them go to waste: time to mandate them for the civilian market!

    • Interesting article. Seems neither the Sheriff, nor the company, understand the meaning of intent, at least when it comes to illegal influence peddling. But, no worries, this is for a good progressive cause in a progressive, nanny state, so it will all be swept under the rug for the “benefit” of all of us (while these fuckers get rich in the process).

      • Meh. This is exactly how business is done. Leave gov, take a job working which entails interfacing with your old gov friends, leave the private sector, go back to regulate your former private sector friends.

Apparently the worst they can do is a $5K fine. Whoa buddy. The company will reimburse him out of petty cash.

It isn’t right, but those deals happen pretty much in the open in DC, and at a much higher level. With much more money in play.

  9. “convene state and local elected officials from all 50 states in May”. I’m elected official. Will have to check the mail for my invite.

  10. How old exactly does the child have to be before he can open a bottle of aspirin? And how old before he can set the house on fire?

  11. I like how he’s made “common sense” into one word “commonsense”. It’s an empty, meaningless term. It doesn’t mean what it sounds like it means.

As to: “…these commonsense steps are not going to prevent every tragedy, but what if they prevented even one?”

That’s like saying: “Inserting a white-hot fireplace poker into the rectum won’t fix every case of hemorrhoids, but what if fixed even one?”

    • Politely? Hell no. He’s a fascistic and arrogant weasel who has contributed to the creation of an extremely divisive political and social atmosphere. I had a psychology textbook that had his picture in a section that was talking about prejudice. The caption basically tried to paint him as the paragon of unity. The book was quickly relocated to the trash compactor.

  12. I have an idea what sort of criteria they’ll hash out for federal agencies to adopt smart guns, and let’s just say I don’t fancy paying to drill a borehole so we can monitor the temperature of hell.

  13. “As long as I’m your president…”

Thank God that time period is now less than a year. Although given how hard he is pushing the smart gun thing, wouldn’t be surprised all to find out he has a vested interest or some lucrative “consulting” deal with someone who happens to be developing this tech. Just another day in the life of an elected official where insider trading and kickbacks, that would get a normal person decades in prison, is just another perk.

  14. 1: “Child prrof medican bottoles = Adult proof.
2: “Smart guns” need batteries. Also I believe there is a lae somewhere that says once they are viable and out on the market all guns must be smart. This is a ploy for that.

  15. Want to START a reduction in gun violence Obama? At least have the human decency to do something PRACTICAL.

    1. Do more to secure the border. More agents would be a start.
    2. Deport any illegal convicted or a felony or who is a member of a gang.
    3. Ask Congress to pass laws seeking the death penalty for any illegal who has committed murder within the United States within 60 days of their sentencing.
    4. Same rule above should apply to all convicted drug dealers, regardless of citizenship.

  16. “As long as we’ve got the technology to prevent a criminal from stealing and using your smartphone…”

So, like smartphones, are they going to pressure gun manufacturers to put in a “back door” so cops and other gov’t employees can use smart guns they’re not authorized for?

  17. Nothing moves fast in the Feds anyway so he will be long gone and the new queen will have different ideas.

  18. I wish he cared about as much about the integrity of our election process as he did about harassing gun owners.

  19. Were we to keep all cars from going faster the 25 mph, we might not prevent all deaths but if only one…

  20. “Today, we’re announcing a rule to ensure that federal mental health records about individuals prohibited from buying a gun are reported to the background check system.”

President Obummer just did that “today”? What the Hell has fedzilla been doing for the past 20 years since they enacted the background check system?

With all the shrieking and hand-wringing about gun-control that has been going on for the past 20 years, you would think fedzilla would have done that long ago. It’s almost like fedzilla wants crime and chaos. I wonder why fedzilla would want crime and chaos? Perhaps to justify gun-control?

  21. Ah, Mr. President… I see that your dictionary and mine differ on the definition of “vast”

  22. to expedite the development of smart gun technology, including by identifying the requirements that smart guns would have to meet in order for law enforcement to purchase and use them
Given that much new firearms technology has been spearheaded by government agencies, it is only fitting that government agencies be utilized and equipped with this new technology that will make us all safer.
    Looks very dangerous…..you go first.
