father's day shooting range

Maybe you’ll be lounging at a beach or by a pool today, cold frosty one in hand. Or maybe your idea of a perfect Father’s Day is hunkering down in front of the tube to watch the final round of the US Open from behind your eyelids.

Oh wait, that’s been rescheduled this year, another American tradition disrupted by the Chinese flu. Some other tournament is taking place this weekend…just about the only sporting event in the country.

But no matter. If you’re like most gun guys — and the range isn’t too crowded — you’ll be sending lead at some targets or upwards toward some clays today with your progeny. If that’s you, what guns will you be shooting?

  1. My S&W model 39-2. I’m working up some reloads and I finally have a chronograph that’s not smarter than I am.

  2. I’m doing some load development for my .45-70 lever gun.
I’ve got a half dozen different bullets to try.
So far, it’s liking heavy hard cast which is a bummer, because of all the pro-jos I already have for the .45 rifles.

  3. Too damn hot!!! Guess I’ll go into the nice cool cellar and load something for another day.😰

  4. over 80lb. ft. from 2500 to 7k in a 420lb package comes first. r&r bar in russel; sheridan rd. home.
then the two diana’s at the garage. a magnum spring pistol and rifle and a pile of discarded clay flower pots.

    • Nice…..
I’ll be tinkering with my Marauder today….I can only shoot inside considering I live in a townhouse…. in the city 🙁

  5. Cool article. I am spending today with my Dear ol’Dad. We broke out the bolt action, single shot 22LR last night, which I cleaned. I didn’t know he still had it. And he said it is mine after we shoot it today. It is the one he first took me shooting with a bit over 50 years ago. The first I ever hunted squirrel with also about 50 years ago. A cool gift from my Father on Father’s day.

    • Old school tobacco pipes here. This week we’ll be taking the ARs for a spin.

  6. 1) I am looking forward to shooting my Hunt Group FD12 Bullpup semi-auto magazine feed 12ga. Covering multiple targets as I sweep across the 50 yard impact area, drop mag, reload, and continue timing it. Putting one hundred and sixty 000 bucks on target in less than 10 seconds. It is the closest thing I have to a sub-machine gun and actually more effective and affordable. NO TAX STAMP REQUIRED. 2) Then checking my e mail to find out if any of the 6mm ARC barrels have shipped so I can test my powder coated cast bullet design to make shooting that new long range thing affordable. 3) Praying for protection for my son-in-law police sniper who is working to protect citizens from looting, assaulting, and raping anarchists poising as ‘peaceful’ protestors.

  7. I can hardly wait. My son is going to take me out shooting today, but I don’t know where. HOWEVER, I have a new (to me) Stevens Favorite .22LR (Joshua Stevens Commemorative Model 71) that I can shoot either indoors or out. Whatever else I’ll take depends on where.

  8. We will be “Dueling Garands” at the gravel pit after lunch.

Then home for BBQ ribs ‘n fixins.

…and a couple of San Miguel Darks so cold your teeth ache drinking one.

…other than that, not doing much.

  9. Don Julio Reposado Tequila!
Actually went out last Thursday. Taurus 1911 .45, Kimber Stainless II 1911 9mm, Ruger 1911 Commander 9mm, and to round it out, Ruger pc9 with Glock 33 rnd mags. Had a fun, but hot morning.
    Happy Fathers Day to all!

      • Here in the Glorious Peoples Republic of Califuckistan I witnessed my first display of enthusiasm for the coming election. It was an overpass covered in people, Trump banners and American flags.

Just like with 2016 and hillary I have seen no, repeat, no support at all for biden.

    • Not true. We have an “It’s All About Me” President. His use of the Republican Party did not make him a Republican, or a Conservative either for that matter.

    • Democrat, republican… same shit different toilet. Doesn’t really matter cuz nobody is taking shit. No army is going to enforce shit, no agency even for that matter, will enforce such a law. We already know the ATF can’t read, so they won’t know what to make of the registration. Just a bunch of gibberish with no pictures. The threat would be too great. It’s all a campaign slogan, and you are naive enough to believe it.

  10. Not shooting any firearms, just shooting the shit and relaxing. That photo of a single row of tires on that range is not the best example of range conditions.

  11. I’d love to go shooting…happy I’m in my Indiana church for the 1st time since March 8th!

  12. Just remembering my dad. He gave me all his guns some time ago. He passed 9/1/2019. We haven’t shot together for decades, but I’ll reminisce about the days when I was a kid and we hunted birds and varmints in Kansas. Really miss him.

  13. My, my son lives 460 miles from me. So, I’ll be shooting my newly acquired CMP 1911 at my home pistol range, alone.

    • Ain’t nothing wrong with that!!!
I’d do anything to have a home range….
Hopefully someday i’ll escape this city hell…

  14. My infant son decided to practice with his person firearm in-between a diaper change and proceeded to stand on his toy truck let loose. That count ?

  15. No ranges open here. So unless some idiot tries to break into my house I will not be shooting today.

  16. Had a terrific moment with my son at the range this week. He is 11 years old with an auditory sensory disorder (hyper sensitive to noise). He was able to hit the 300 yard gong with the ar…twice.
We had double ear protection on him and ran a suppressor. It was the first non 22 or caliber he has comfortably shot. It was a great day.

  17. not today…range is closed…tomorrow
    my latest build
    10.5 ar pistol…7.62×39
bear creek arsenal mlok upper…nitrided bcg
black rifle arms enhanced firing pin
    palmetto state armory lower
    mission first tactical brace
truglo 20mm 2 moa red dot that my kids just gave me for fathers day
    45 degree buis
    c products mags
    should be fun

  18. Heading to the farm now. Meeting my son there. Already had lunch with him, my daughter and son-in-law. Crab cakes, blacked Cobia with a jambalaya sauce and creamed collards. Ran into my cousin Susie and Mike there. Their daughter Becky. Then Randy and Pam. Randy is the guy with all the NFA HKs. Told him about my exchange between me and some of you guys about the ARs yesterday. Even Pam laughed. If you’re ever in Tallahassee I recommend Wahoo Seafood Grill. I-10 & N. Monroe. Oh, John and I are shooting 1911s today. .45 ACP of course.

    • Thnx for that tip!
When FSU starts up this fall (if?) I will check it out.
Maybe even before then. Paying for an empty (for summer) apt thru 8/1/21 while the baby is home. Senior ya coming up.
She’s such an excellent shooter; always has been. Really gonna steer her to the FSU Action Shooting Club this fall.
We went out yesterday and shot various pistols and the ARs.
      Had a blast as always.

      Happy Father’s Day !!

      • Just, try the crab bisque. Very rich. Anything more than a cup will spoil your lunch/dinner. Unless you can eat more than me. lol

    • Iron. Condolences. Lost my dad last September. The world is a lesser place for it. I jumped out of airplanes. Scuba dived for sport and bodies. Chased pistols thru doors. Dad spent his life on crutches and in a wheelchair. I wish I was half the man he was. Polio.

  19. Go out shooting? In this heat?

Maybe when I was a younger man. But these years I find myself susceptible to melting under that Sun.

  20. Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm 2.0 with Leupold Red Dot in IPSC match. Best way I know to celebrate any occasion.

  21. Sorry, I meant to add that all ranges in South and North Carolina are open for competition. Love the South!

  22. The ranges around here are far too crowded on weekends. Even with our 110 degree weather.

  23. Probably everything, I need to test .308 and 9mm handloads, brush up my pistol and shotgun skills and try out the fancy red dot and magnifier on my son’s AR. Plus some fun with the .22 collection.

  24. It as a fairly quiet afternoon. Mostly pistols, but my buddy DID bring out his newest toy.

I got to enjoy the vaporware that is the LWRC SMG-45. My father in law giggled like my tween daughter the whole time he put his first mag through it.

  25. You need to teach your son a better stance 😉 He’s got his head tilted and a little too relaxed, that’s why he can’t hit shit lol.

That said, just shooting some of my dad’s FUDD guns and he’s shooting some of my SCARY guns 😉

  26. What’s this Father’s Day crap? Around here, it is just another Labor Day. I thought about going to the indoor range, but never got there, too much to do. And both of my kids are two time zones away anyway.

  27. Shooting my new Nighthawk Custom Agent 2 that I got today, along with some matching father/son range shirts that my sister in law made for us. I am certainly blessed and hope y’all are as well. 😁

  28. Awww didn’t shoot today, too far away for the schedule I had. I did do some cleanup on the ones I shot last week, two AR’s, Beretta 92A1 and CCW XD9 Subcompact. Spiffed up and ready to go again.

  29. shooting a USPSA match in carry optics division, Walther PPQ 5″ in 9mm with a Leupold DPP

  30. My .30-06 took out some “range made” binary explosives.
And my doctor thought I needed those extra instant cold packs for my back!

  31. My oldest enjoyed plinking with a recently restored SKS and a recently assembled AR Pistol, while my wife refreshed her skills with a Taurus TX22. The variety of guns offered the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the difference between a clip and a magazine. My youngest isn’t into shooting yet, so we went to a virtual shooting simulator (i.e. an arcade). It was a great fathers day weekend.
